The song that starts at 6:45; the singer has a great voice. Reminds me of the buttery smooth pipes of Chris Cornell.... Thank you for sharing this video, illustrating the setbacks as well.
Thank you for liking it! I have spend a lot of time choosing the music to try to fit the mood of the build segments. Same with our travel videos. Glad you enjoyed it!
Could you not have a fireplace with ICFs because it's so tight? Just curious
I think you can, probably put it on an inside wall maybe. But it is terrible for letting conditioned inside air mix with ambient outside air. A wood burning free standing fire box might be better than a fireplace. This house is so tight right now when you open the front door, it has a little suction-seal feel. No vent for the toilet rooms, no vent for the clothes Dryer, and no vent for the cooktop. All inside air is cycled with fresh tempered and filtered outside air every 24 hours with our HRV. the only thing is all our heat is using electricity now, we don't have a secondary heat source if we were to loose power. Thank you for the great question!
@basecampbluesky thank you for the response. Enjoy your lovely home🏡
Never trust only the the jacks on the unit without proper blocking in case the primary jacks fail. Also, a plastic bag, gallon size, would catch the residue from the filter. Loosening it beforehand was a good idea, too. Good luck to you!
Also, don't try to film with one hand and take off the filter with only the other! Use both hands! Thanks for the thoughts!
Congrats on your new home. You’re living my dream. Did you consider SIPS roof? Looks like it would have be great to pair with ICF walls
I thought of that at one point early in the design phase. Because of the lofted living area, and the large, tall garage, I decided I didn't need the attic space. So we went with standard batt insulation instead. Thanks for watching!
I remember that place!
I was a nice hike!
Gotta luv in-floor hydronic heat as the floor becomes a flywheel of warmth. .. Great choice! A super big undertaking.. All the very best.
Thank you so much!! We don't need it any other time than the winter here! The walls and floor insulation do a pretty good job! Keep up with us on our Highway 89 series coming soon!
I know the storms set you back but remember everything is there for a reason and the reason was God send you a sign that you're doing the right thing by building a home out of solid poured concrete because of the storms and possible tornadoes in the summer a lot of people lose their lives because they built these homes in Tornado Alley out of wood and we have all seen the sad destruction and loss of lifes God bless you and your family with the build and that beautiful home and God bless the 🙏🇺🇲United States of America🙏 🇺🇸
Thank you for the heartfelt words.

Highway 89, we can’t wait!
Me neither! Filming continues on our Highway 89 series. Debuting this fall!
Just curious why people are using wood trusses with tall roofs, and wood/wallboard for the interior walls instead of the ICF roof panels, and either thin ICF's or poly panels with mortar for the inside walls? Wood, paint and wallboard is expensive, as well as the siding, etc.
Thanks for the questions. We used Engineered trusses because of the span in the garage area. All other interior walls are non-supporting. I designed a Barn-look, thus the exterior panels hung vertical. Thank you for the comment!
First episode!
First Trip Log. Not the Actual series yet!
What or whose window buck did you use?
I made them myself. Should be on the How to install windows video, I believe. Thanks for the good question!
Can’t wait!!!
Me neither!!
Thanks for the video! I have a few questions! Have you had this DX since new? Did you put all the miles on it? Do you service the engine yourself? How many mpg? How many hours on the generator? Any issues with it? Any major issues with the DX? Thanks!
Great Questions! We love our Rig. Purchased it used in 2021. 2017 model year. We travel a lot, put over 50K on it so far. Engine is still way under service miles, so just oil, fuel filter, etc. Towing our Jeep, up and over mountains, between 8-9 mpg, depending on how fast we go. Generator had 850 hours on it when we purchased it, only 16K miles driven, so very strange to have the generator run so much. It came from a Drag Racing Engine builder. It wasn't lived in much, but we have lived in it a lot, building our Barndominum for almost 2 years. The Tile floor seems to be the biggest issue, it is lifting and cracked in a few spots, as you can imagine over all the rough interstate roads we have in this country! Great Nation, but seems to need a little move road love.... Thanks for the questions!
Great trip!!
One of our Favorites!
Did any cars come honking while y’all were at Forrest Gump road?
Nope! Pretty quiet in the morning! Better sun on the Monuments!
Very cool project! Where’s the dog’s quarters? How does heating with the mini split system work in the cold? I have some friends in Denver who struggle to keep their home comfortable in single digit temps with mini split systems.
Kenai sleeps with us at the foot of our bed (or on the couch-she loves couches) both in the Barn and our RV. The super insulation does wonders. I think the floor insulation helps a bunch too. We put radiant pipe in (but no heat for them yet), just in case the Mini-splits didn't keep up. One winter in, a mild one at that, and we were fine. Good solar gain with the big south facing windows helped greatly. A little electric fireplace heat in the eve while watching football, or TH-cam, was all we needed. Never got below 60 in the living space, with the Mini-Splits working in the mornings only. We didn't get below 50 in the garage, with no heat at all! So far the hard work is paying off!
Congratulations! I find it hard to believe that you did so much by yourself and surprisingly, so far did a fabulous job. It'll be interesting to see how the test of time holds up for things like maintenance, warranties, etc. Behind the scenes who was guiding you the most on things like permitting, building codes (garbage disposal), and design intent?
Well, Thank you for the great comments! I did everything myself. My next door neighbor is a long time resident in the area, and currently is a flooring contractor. He pointed me in the right direction, and so did the Montrose County Planning Department. Great people there! The only contractors I brought in were for the Electrical and the roofing. Electrical uses the State Department, which is a little harder to deal with as a self-builder. All the other inspectors were great, and pointed out a few things as we went. Also, I did all the home design, with the roof trusses designed by the Truss company, and the septic system was Engineered by local Septic engineering firm. Hard work, long days, rough winter, but got it done! Now on to traveling, hang with us as we use the Barn as our Basecamp as we travel and show cool places to visit in the west!
Did anyone get honked at while y’all were at Forrest Gump road?
Not that we heard! Was fun though!
Needs a good cleaning for sure bumper to bumper.
Travel does make things dirty. One trip this year, right after a wash the day before, it rained early in the morning,. Ss when we departed, the roads were just wet enough to make it worse than before I washed it. You can't win!
We love the Moki Dugway, can’t wait to go back!
Fun Fun Fun!

Maybe next time!
Put some solar panels on the roof
Someday we will!
Awesome work, it looks great. We are planing on using the same materials. How did you hide the ICF block below the stone? Did you just cover it with dirt?
Thanks for the good question. I had 4 courses below grade, all the way down to the concrete foundation. Once that initial pour had cured, I covered it all with Nudura Water Proofing Membrane. I made sure the membrane went above grade, so that when we backfilled the trench, moisture wouldn't migrate into the foam. Then I put the siding up. I should have maybe painted the visible membrane black, because it is slightly noticeable just under the Versetta Stone, and below the LP Smartside Siding. I am not sure what paint would stick to the Nudura product.... maybe look that up! Good Luck with your build!
I’m building a pole barn 50x70x18 out of icf next month. I’m very excited
GREAT! But then is it not called a pole barn? ICF Barn? We need a good name for this style of Barndominium! Where in the country are you doing the construction?
@@basecampbluesky MN. Icf is the same cost as doing metal building and spray foam. Icf barn sounds great lol
Fantastic. Get it done! We will be up in MN in August. Great weather. But winter, watch my last video cautioning about cold weather with ICF's...
@@coreym5072what brand of ICF? I m trying to decide between Fox and Alleguard. When are you starting?
@@ToddBizCoach stronghold. In my opinion they make the best. Fox is good as well, but more expensive here bc concrete company sells them. Starting in spring now
Wait a minute, who filmed the outside walk around??
You! Finally got it into a video! And finally a good time to do it too!
Hearty congratulations for building your dream. Passion and interest trumps the long work days. This is an inspiration for me, unfortunately most population lost the art of building on their own.
Don't we know it! Maybe we can help rekindle the art of doing things yourself! Hard work building it, but loving it too! Thanks for the great comment.
Your home is truly one to be admired, WOW! Thank you for sharing.
Lot of work, but it was worth it, thank you!!
Hey Basecamp Blue Sky! Looking forward to coming along and joining you on your adventures.
More than welcomed!

Oh yes!
One of the high performance builders on the Build Show Network uses engineered studs when wall heights are 12' or higher. It keeps them laser straight. Sure it's more cost, but, keeping a perfectly straight wall with long regular dimensional lumber is all but impossible. I also agree with you on having all doors and hallways be 36" wide minimum to accommodate someone who may need to use a walker or wheelchair. I am looking at doing ICF for my next house build. Did you have any issues with indoor humidity right after the walls were poured?
Lots of good thoughts. We live in a high altitude, low humidity environment. the walls were poured maybe 10 months before we moved in. I can't say we saw or felt the humidity from the concrete, but I for sure felt humid when the drywall was being mudded, and when I was painting the interior. Once all that had dried, it really hasn't been an issue. Our Ventilation system has a humidity monitor, and we are typically around 30%. I will see if that goes down over the next year, as I have read the concrete will take that long to cure. Thank you for watching!
Ohh my....just gorgeous... everything from the colors, textures, wall paintings, decorations match in harmony. Enjoy guys. ❤
Thank you so much 😀
I like how he made sure to build his huge garage for his RV. great work.
Thank you!
Great video! Question: any reason you used a peel and stick instead of a fluid-applied waterproofing system? I've been looking at rub-r-wall or hulk systems...
Thank you for the good question. Nudura ICF requires their own waterproof membrane: It doesn't deteriorate their foam. I looked into a roll-on product, but it couldn't guarantee it wouldn't melt the foam. As an example, I marked where all the vertical rebar was to go in the first foundation concrete pour. I used a can of fluorescent spray paint, and it slightly melted the foam if I used too much! Other Brands of ICF may be more resilient, I don't know.
Great project, the home looks beautiful.
Thank you!
Hello, I noticed that you did your ICF walls in three sections. Is the reason to just make it easier as a DIY builder instead of doing the entire wall once? I am using Home Assistant for home automation. It has gotten much easier to use over years but it still requires some learning. Anyway, it allows you to program/control almost everything, and it has a large group of users willing to help online .
Thank you for watching! We did 3 wall pours because concrete is very heavy, and would tend to blow out the bottom foam if poured in too tall at one time. Also, once the concrete is in place, the walls move way more than I thought they would! Concrete, when poured, is a liquid, and the foam barely had enough strength to contain it! So bracing a very tall wall would be hard to do.
Q. Did you buy slabs or prehung doors from that website? I was wonder how prehungs would fare during shipping.
Thank you for the comment. All doors were pre-hung. They were shipped in two very well made containers with very good bracing. We had no problems.
@@basecampbluesky good to know. Thx.
Good Job, a lot of hard work to do most of it yourself. The only thing that I would have done differently, I would have put insulation on the outside of the roof. Rockwool under the so the attic would have been conditioned space.
For sure. But it is a large space! Over 16' tall inside the garage, plenty of room inside, not sure if we could actually use the attic space... Over our first winter we were no lower than 55 degrees inside the garage with no heat! 65 inside the living space before we turned on the Mini Splits. So far so good!
