The scum n dirt collects at the bottom naturally so that would get the pump clogged up but the skimmer idea sounds good. Thank u so much or ur comment

@aquariumheaven oh i see u put long pipe in outlet,so it same thing yes without floating plant it always get layer like oil in top, especially low flow water

The flow from the air bubbles going up n sucking the water through the sponge is so gentle it doesn't stop the sponge from doing it's job as long as the sponge is not touching the sides of the container inside. The container's job is to trap the dirt so when u take it out to clean the sponge it holds most of the dirt from falling off the sponge back into the water. Thank you so much for ur comment.
