Antenna 1973
Here is a young guy climbing up a 50 foot antenna tower in about 30 seconds. It was about 51 years ago , and I bet the guy wishes he could climb like that today. He might also wish he had more hair. But not quite as much as back then.

Unfortunately this method will not give you comprehensive result. As the threshold voltage, Output Drive Current, Propagation Delay, Temperature Stability changes by the aging of the IC.( these are more common failures, than simple not working) And will make your circuit glitching. Some of the manufacturers had worse manufacturing methods.
A belt would have been nice. Was that his tower, or a neighbor's?
Hi Dave, It was his, and still is. A testament to Rohn towers. I can confirm that he now has a climbing belt.
That terrific counter ic pcb...
That counter issue looks worrying - there is a chip that drives the last 4 digits of the display (MSM5501?) and when it goes bad that's the effect you get. Unfortunately, it's been EOL and unobtainium for years.
Hi Todd. I got one of these given to me by a friend. He said it would only ever put out 7 watts. I don't know much about repairing radios. Would you be interested in having a look at mine and seeing if you could figure out what's wrong with it? I have a heart for this generation of icom radios. They were well built.
It's FP is probably pretty close to the filament location.
Great tips. I never thought of using an old hand lantern reflector to like this.
I also like the auto find function to identify the device. My eyes aren't so good these days and reading the markings can be a bit hard.
Hello. I just bought a fixer upper yesterday, and i was wondering if anyone could send me a picture of their voltage regulator board. Could anyone help?
I just dedusted one from my basement to take a look at it this week end. Thanks for making this video. HP archive has the manual. I have no probe tips but hope it will still be useful with a generic probe.
The service manual has a supplement that describes using a clip lead to get 9V for the freq counter TP. I'm trying to figure out where the semi flat rectangle of copper goes. It came out the bottom with a boing when I tipped the face forward. This unit needs the lamps replaced and has bad spots in the VFO but I don't see anything wrong in there, yet.
👍Thanks for sharing.
Automotive Brake-Kleen will clean all that old grease out and it quickly evaporates with no residue. Just use caution on overspray on unintended areas. Great video, beautiful radio!
Hi i have problems with my repeater shift if I try to send it just powers of the frequency counter and won’t transmit I hope someone can help me
I hope you figure something out. I can't even get mine to power at the moment.
wow what great timing. just googled this. i bought a t48 a couple of months back for EEPROMs, but need to test digital logic and CMOS chips ive been getting from china
i have been using mi9ne to test chips for Sinclair spectrums and acorn electrons , you can also download the images to test them if they are not in the extensive list
Very cool man. Good content
I'm SOOOOO glad to see you are back in the shop! So, where do you get the programmer and where do you download the software you are using? Please supply some links.🙂
Hi eie_for_you, Thank you for the kind words. I bought the programmer from Aliexpress. It is an XCecu pro T48. The software, XgproV1267_setup.rar , was downloaded from www.mediafire.com/file/q808n105ibexkl8/XgproV1266A_Setup.rar/file .
Hi Tod, i have the same sinadder but there are some caps missing, ex. C25 and c25 sadly on the schematic there is no info of the value and orientation + and -, also the cap beside r44 is unknown, please can you provide me some info on the caps
Great video, I've learned so much from watching your different videos. I have a question on a 901DM that has very weak receive. It tunes up fine but can barely hear anything. It has a white noise type hiss and with a very strong signal you can only hear it faintly. It's a fine rig with no previous work /hacks from the looks of it. Any help would be appreciated. 73s Steve N5MSY
Hi Steve, I would start by cleaning the band switch contacts. Also clean the contacts on relay RL701 on the carrier board. Since you can hear a weak signal , this points to a problem closer to the front end. These old radios are notorious for bad switch and relay contacts .
Really it is Impedance meter, not ESR
Thanks for the video
Great video ! I had one of these with the same symptoms. Now I wish I hadn't thrown it out.
Good idea for a functional and simple conversion. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Todd. I have a TS-830s that needs to be worked on. I was hoping if you can work on mine. Thanks!
This is so cool. You are the man. Acetone does cut the varnish when heated. Just a thought.
What was final solution after adding semiconductor diodes ?
Hi Dana, I have the diodes. Unfortunately I have been diagnosed with cancer , and have not been able to do much the last few months. I am recovering slowly , and hope to resume my projects soon. I will do an update on the 515a as soon as I am able . Thanks for asking.
@@toddanonymous5295 Take good care of yourself first and foremost. Its my humble belief we are in the exponential solution growth phase of Cancer solutions, weeks and months and AI making huge progress in genetic alteration war against Cancer.
Hi.... I have a 901DM on my bench and the clarifier does not work. I can't hear the relay open/close when I push the RIT button in. TX clarifier does work. Question! How in the hell do you get to the 1920 switch board? Do I have to take the entire front panel off?
Hi Todd, can I get the model number of the AM/FM Tuner box?
Yes great stuff and so small Thanks for sharing It gives me an idea that things can be fixed with time and patience.
Congratulations God bless you greatly I hope you are better soon hugs
todd good morning! where are you ? great video ...
Hi Josealeixes2861, I have been very sick the last few months but am slowly recovering now. I have a number of projects I'm anxious to work on and plan on beginning soon. Thanks for asking.

Nice and neat , thank you very much .
Great video a great learning experience for those who don't own this radio. Enjoyed it very much appreciate your doing this video very kind of you 73s Mike
You are THE 7603 MASTER
I am interested in building one and was wondering if you could provide me with a parts and source list. I would greatly appreciated it very much.
hello i just got rid of mine, very scratchy and noisey.i wished they did all the old stough again best ever made
These set have usually a lot more than a problem... piece of junk now.
Thanks very much for this series. Very interesting and well explained. I've just bought a TS830 and also have a TS530, so of particular interest to me.
Yup, you need to adjust the pre-selecter to the band you want, you'll get no audio out until you do this. This caught me. I just got one of these, and re-capped it. 73
Great video, lots of good info, especially the VFO servicing. My 901DM is 46 years old now, June '78 build and the VFO is getting a bit lumpy. Also got issues tuning up on 40. Loading control won't peak. Just keeps rising all the way to position 10 on the scale. l hope yours is now working 100%. Thanks for posting. 73 de Keith
I bought one FT 910D back in January. Seems the Attenuator Switch is pretty much broken. If it is half depressed I have a good reception, in any other position I have nearly no reception. And the S-Meter doesn't display how much output I have. I will trace all the cables and see if I can get the 901 back to service. On the good side: VFO is stable and not drifting, dial is smooth output is around 80Watts, but without a proper readout I won't try more. Any tipps are higly appreciated.
Hi Andre, Incoming RF is routed through the Tune Switch board ( PB 1720) before being sent to the RF board ( PB 1702 ). Switch S03 on the Tune Switch board is the attenuator switch that switches in R05,06, and 07 to attenuate the received signal. I would clean the contacts of S03 as it is likely the cause of your intermittent. It is a good idea to clean all relay and switch contacts as these are the major areas that cause trouble in these older rigs. Good luck
These Ft-901s were the top of the line radio in their day. I’ve been running one as my backup rig for a few months. Killer receiver and rejection filtering.
Great to see the vintage units I longed for in the late eighties early nighties. Hope to see part 2. Regards steve
Gotcha! 🙂
I bought one at a good price. I am thinking of using banana plugs so I can use different cables, however, I see on lines are grounded. Not sure how that will work out. I might test before committing.
Nice video. Learned something. I was wondering if the M (memory) enabled might something to do with digital display. Looking forward to the follow up. Fernando N2FQ/6
I really enjoyed this one , especially seeing the VFO. And 720p is back! Thanks.
