Learning from Giotto, Unveiling the Beauty of a Stacco'd Boon Fresco Copy (1 minute)
มุมมอง 399ปีที่แล้ว
Mike is using this test fresco of Giotto's putti to practice the "stacco" process. Earlier, he separated the fresco from its support and glued its backside to a thick piece of cotton. In this video Mike removes the glue and fabric that was applied to protect the image from damage while he separated the plaster from its previous support.

Whoa. That’s amazing. To be honest, I’m shocked the technique works so well.
What paints do u use
Technically it is pigment ground into water. The plaster acts as the binder.
🤩
Thank you!

Cool!
Thanks!
Another fun one!
Thank you!
Fun demo of buon fresco!
Thank you studionichols!
Graphite! Love it.
Thanks for your continued support Studionichols! <3
That is a lot of hard work. Hats off to fresco painters!
Yes it was! Those young artists put in some serious sweat equity in this project.
Will this blue start to look brighter after a couple of years? Or darker?
It will dry lighter because of the lime putty in the mix. Usually, it will dry 2-3 shades lighter. I'll see If I can find a before an after for you. But, once it's dry the color will remain unchanged for the life of the plaster.
So relaxing1
Thank you!
<3
Thank you!
This is so cool!! Is it rabbit kin glue and unbleached muslin? And balls of steel.
Hi Matthew, thanks for commenting! It is hide glue, not sure if it’s actually bunny glue or some other animal and cheesecloth. Also yes on the steel balls 😆
What a fun fresco video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love this reveal!!
thank you studionichols!
Which medium of color is good for this technique
Hi! Thanks for your question. The medium is buon fresco, which is just powdered pigments mixed with water, then applied to a wet lime plaster surface. The colors are specific in fresco because the lime in the plaster is high in alkalinity and destroys colors that are not alkali resistant. I plan to post a step by step tutorial on fresco painting in the next month or so. Keep your eyes out for when I release it :)
And, it's going to last a couple thousand years.
:)
Effing brilliant. Thanks
Thank you Matthew!
@@ArtEssentials I am starting to paint Fresco. I know what it takes to do what you do.
@@matthewjones1420 It is such a beautiful technique. There is a Facebook group of fresco painters. You should join if you are on FB. Search the group name. "Buon Fresco Painting"
How long does it take to tarnish?.......I’m impatient.......It looks really nice when that happens. 🥰🥰🥰
It takes a long time to tarnish unless you force it to do so sooner. There are a couple ways to do that. In case you're interested in pushing the tarish sooner, the book Silverpoint and Metalpoint; A Complete Guide describes that process very well. It's an excellent book on the subject all around.
@@ArtEssentials thank you so much for your reply.......I’ll look into it. 🥰🥰🥰
Hi.....thank you for your reply........thought I’d try gold colour pencils.........the gold is quite different between brands.......I did a portrait of a young Henry V111....... it actually looks good...🥰🥰🥰
How fun! Do you have a website? I'd love to see it. Also, what brands of gold coloured pencils were you using? Have you tried actual gold to draw? It's a lot like silverpoint but it doesn't tarnish.
@@ArtEssentials hi.... I actually used the gold pencils from the sets of Fabre Castel , Prismacolour, Derwent.......they all have a slightly different tone to each other..........I must have a go at the real gold point drawing...... I suppose you could combine the silver and gold....should look nice when the silver tarnishes......best wishes to you. 🥰🥰🥰
@@ArtEssentials I don’t have a website........ I sold the picture I’d done...... I’ll do some more though. 🥰🥰🥰
❤wonderful
Thank you! 😊
Yup, I've been doing that since a youngster
Thanks Kathy! It's such a simple idea but you'd be surprised how many folks never thought of it.
Soooo...when are you doing the next video? I really liked this video of yours and I was hoping to use part 2 with my class (I'm an art teacher) rather than making my own video. I'm starting Gesture Drawing next week. Any chance you will have it ready and uploaded? 😃🤞
Hello Heather! My apologies for taking a year to get back to you. I am still getting used to TH-cam, and your comment was sitting in a holding area for review, which I just discovered tonight :) Hope that class went well!
@@zrzolako1047 Thank you. It is uploaded now. You can find it here: th-cam.com/video/RQmr9uZIICI/w-d-xo.html
This is really useful info
Thank you!
how long does a silver rod last?
It lasts a very long time. If you work small scale you may only need one or two 1" silver rods every few years, depending on how many drawings you make.
For those wishing to know more about the intricacies of silverpoint and metalpoint more generally, there is a new book out on the subject. It's truly excellent and comprehensive: Silverpoint and Metalpoint Drawing, A Complete Guide to the Medium, by Susan Schwalb and Tom Mazullo. They are experts. You can find the book here: www.amazon.com/Silverpoint-Metalpoint-Drawing-Complete-Medium-ebook/dp/B07L6SXY2P
is the silverpoint blog still going please and if so could I have the name please. Many thanks
Yes, thanks for asking! You can find the website here: silverpointweb.com
very helpful - Mr. Nichols word choices and expressions say " I care that you enjoy this presentation and that you get the best and most complete data for fine experience and results in your work. YES. Thank you.
Thank you for the nice comment. Sorry to take 4 years to reply to you.
Thankyou so much for sharing your knowledge of this medium....it really is a quite beautiful 👏
Thank you Linda!
Is it possible to speed up the tarnishing process?
Yes. You can expose a silverpoint drawing to liver of sulpher fumes. I've never done it, but the book Silverpoint and Metalpoint Drawing, by Tom Mazullo and Susan Schwalb, discusses the details of doing so. In a nutshell, you are only trying to expose the drawing to the fumes over several hours, ideally in a sealed container. Here is the book I am referring to. It is excellent and comprehenssive. www.amazon.com/Silverpoint-Metalpoint-Drawing-Complete-Medium-ebook/dp/B07L6SXY2P
I've been wanting to learn to use metalpoint, yours is one of the most useful videos on the topic. The idea of using an exacto knife holder is great, considering the ridiculous price they're asking for what I guess we're supposed to believe are real, official metalpoint drawing. I think I'll try goldpoint.
Thank you Anthony, and my apologies for replying so late.
Natural Pigments in Wilits, CA, sells several types of metal points, a stylus and a ground. This is a company I highly recommend as everything I have ever purchased from them has been of the highest quality. Their customer service is also very good.
Thanks Nathan Meier, I have not used their metalpoint products, but have ordered other items from them in the past. For sure a great company. I always appreciate those few folks who sell high quality craft materials. Thanks again for your post.
Priceless.
The kraft-like paper used is fine, nowadays I use StuccoWrap which is similar to Tyvek.
Thank you for this. It’s the best demo on silverpoint I’ve seen. I used marbledust + gouache on vellum and it did smudge with a blending stomp very nicely.
Thank you. Sorry to take 5 years to reply XD
are there any other metals you can use to draw with?
Yes. Metals like copper, aluminum, and gold also work.
where do you buy the silver?
My apologies for replying so late. You can buy silver rod on Amazon or from your local jeweler. 12 gauge wire fits a standard graphite clutch-style pencil. Prisma color makes once. The silver should cost you about one USD per inch (or less) and the pencil clutch will run you about 10-15 USD.
Other ask: can be used fixative on the drawings by this technique ?
I suppose you could but there is no need as the marks are stable without fixative. It would likely prevent the tarnishing that many find so lovely, however that may be something others wish to prevent.
Hello Mr960silva, The small sphere was drawn on untreated mat board. However, the gesso on the table in the background is liquitex. I normally use Liquitex Clear Gesso because I prefer the soft glow of the natural paper.
what brand is that gesso ?
Mr960silva Liquitex.
