CUT-OFF LOW brings SEVERE Thunderstorms with HAIL to Bloemfontein, South Africa (Aug 2, 2024)
A weak cut-off low brought unseasonal winter Thunderstorms last night to the summer rainfall region of central South Africa. This storm cell that hit Bloemfontein ended up becoming severe in a very short time bringing strong winds, heavy rain, hail and a violent but beautiful lightning show.

I had to use all my strength to not get blown over while recording this wind. A strong cold front hit South Africa causing gale force winds, freezing temperatures and even snow in the central and southern interior. This morning (July 9, 2024) Bloemfontein recorded it's lowest temperature for this winter at -8.5°c (16°F)

Since winter is the dry season in central South Africa and almost constant clear skies is expected, thunderstorms during this time of year are very uncommon. But as a cut-off low moved south of the country, there were just enough ingredients for isolated storms over the central interior and said Isolated storms moved directly towards us.

This was one of many supercell thunderstorms that wrecked havoc across the Free State province of South Africa (in and around Bloemfontein) throughout December of 2021. There were reports of tornadoes by some of those supercells during that month.

On a very hot, humid and windy late-spring day the 10th of November 2022, a strong squall-line of thunderstorms hit Bloemfontein around the evening after already being hit by a supercell thunderstorm earlier that afternoon. This squall-line thunderstorms however had one of the most beautiful shelf-cloud formations I had ever seen in person.

Strong multicell thunderstorms appeared from the southwest in Bloemfontein late this afternoon, with it came loud rumbling thunder and a heavy downpour. Each storm cell lasting around 20-30minutes, building up until it collapses with heavy rain and winds that causes a new storm cell to develope behind it.

I went to South Africa over Christmas in 1995. One of my memories from Christmas Eve was the thunderstorm in Ermelo on Christmas Eve. I turned 10 years old on that trip as well.
Been living with such storms all my life. Central and eastern south africa gets a lot of severe thunderstorms during the storm season and just 2 days ago there was a tornado near Ermelo.
Are there no storm chasers in Africa?
By far not as much as in the USA. But 2 I do know of here in South Africa, however most videos they have are on facebook. 1 of them living in the same city as me, called: Storm Report SA

We just got are first snowfall of the year last night and today got about 5" here in upstate New York
I've never in my life seen that much snow! This part of South Africa has very dry winters but freezing temperatures and frost is common. So if it does snow it's usually light.

This storm actually built up fast, I'd say around 30 minutes. It lasted for about 10 minutes but was followed by more storms from behind, so it was storming for about 2hours.
