ChatGPT Search with new features including maps, navigational queries, and live mode with Search
OpenAI revealed some important new features for ChatGPT Search as part of its 12 days of ship-mas in December. Day 8 yielded local search with maps integration, new treatment for navigational queries (which opens up ad opportunities), and then live mode now having the ability to tap into Search for up-to-date information. I cover each of these features and then end with a live demo of ChatGPT live mode with Search.

I have already added this to my post... and it should be put to rest any idea that only page-level signals are used. :) You can read more about this in my post: www.gsqi.com/marketing-blog/google-site-level-impact-gabeback-machine/#sitewide

    Is this applicable for discover traffic as well

    • @GlennGabe
      @GlennGabe หลายเดือนก่อน

      Discover is an extension of Search, so any impact to Search visibility can impact Discover visibility. I'm actually covering more about this in my NESS presentation on Tuesday! So yes, I would be very careful about the type of content hosted on a site, where that content resides, and if it looks "independent or starkly different" from the main content of the site. It could impact Search, which can then impact Discover.

  • @GlennGabe
    @GlennGabe หลายเดือนก่อน

    Update 2: I received a response from Google after following up to learn more about what was going on (since Danny Sullivan explained that Google was NOT testing the ‘Site reputation abuse’ algorithm). Here is their response: “Our systems aim to understand if a section of a site is independent or starkly different from the main content of the site. This helps us surface the most useful information from a range of sites.” They also provided a link to a tweet thread from 2019 where they addressed questions about hosting third-party content on subdomains or subfolders. My thoughts: So it seems Google is improving its systems for understanding when content located in subdomains or subfolders is “independent or starkly different from the main content of the site.” This is super-important to understand and I’m glad Google shared that with me.

  • @GlennGabe
    @GlennGabe หลายเดือนก่อน

    Quick Update: I heard from Google's Danny Sullivan about this and he confirmed that Google is NOT testing its 'Site reputation abuse' algorithm at this time. So, the drops must be from other changes that Google is pushing that are impacting those affiliate directories strongly. I updated my post with that information. Very interesting.

    Interesting examples. Thank you. The volatility can only mean one thing: Google realizes that the August update didn't deliver the results they had in mind. Looking at the search results, I have to agree with that. In my own tiny dataset of 3 sites it was all hit and miss. Two surged but didn't deserve it. One dropped and didn't deserve it.

    When do we think Google will announce another public algo update? With this continued volatility it seems that unconfirmed algo tweaks are running.

    • @GlennGabe
      @GlennGabe 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Really hard to say when the next confirmed algorithm update will roll out. I can see another core update later this fall, but in 2023, there were six confirmed algo updates in a short period of time... which was insane (and unusual). Also, the reviews update is running behind the scenes and Danny explained that was being updated pretty frequently... What we're seeing now could be a number of things, including Google decoupling algorithms from broad core updates and running them separately, testing something else in the wild (which could be rolled back), or other things. Stay tuned. I'll be tracking this closely.

    What still ranks? Local, ecommerce & big publishers. Why? They also spend money on ads. Sites monetized with display ads or affiliate are unlikely to become Google ads customers so why would they give exposure to these sites for free. Also, now companies that relied heavily on their affiliate programs will need to spend more on ads as all this traffic is gone.
