Truck driving is certainly not "skilled labour" in the way that an engineer or someone in IT, and I don't agree with their logic of a licence being needed being enough a reason for something to be skilled. But with modern trucks and specifically the upper-end firms having trucks with more and modern tech and equipment than you can imagine and what they require of licenses and what not, ang again being entrusted with tens of $ks of property, they're a lot more skilled than you give them credit. I don't know if they're skilled labour or not, but you must be either pathetic or just an asshole to talk down on some dude who's job is probably quite taxing and exhausting, regardless of how skilled you think it is

I had on clean jeans, a clean t-shirt & clean tennis shoes. He said he's tired of seeing dirty drivers. I stepped away from trucking in 2008 & just got back in it 6/2021 now the kids are grown & I've noticed it's drivers still out here not caring about their personal presentation or their truck's presentation. Please keep yourself & your truck presentable at all times. You never get to make a 1st impression twice.

Blah blah blah, truckers are just as bad as other motorists, I was tail gated for over ten miles this morning by a semi who eventually got pulled over when we passed a deputy, it’s very common to be tail gated by semi trucks while doing the speed limit, or having an impatient semi driver try to pass you on a narrow ass high way, I don’t have the same respect for those guys that I used to anymore.

Well I got two older trucks both of them are non-emissions Cummins and Detroit Diesel. They were both paid off and the insurance is very cheap. So all I got to worry about is the maintenance and that is much cheaper than having a brand new truck payment with brand new insurance. Like the man said things break even in a new truck. Just because the new truck is warrantied doesn't mean that they will fix it right away and that is lost revenue when that truck sits. Unless you going to do a Penske lease which I'm not sure how much that cost. Also if you do decide to buy one of these older non-emission trucks, make sure you bring some tools with you and extra parts like I do. Because something like a little airline on the top of the transmission could let loose. You can call somebody up if they even show up and pay a premium of $500 before they even touch the truck. Or you could have bought yourself 20 ft of quarter inch black hose off of Amazon for around $15and a couple of push pull hose connectors to fix your problem. All the trucks do have their issues and that's why preventative maintenance is key. Then again you're dealing with a truck so anything can happen at any time.

  • @kevinlester5167

You keep saying $20 per hour. Forklift operators make that. Company drivers should make $30-35 per hour 11 hours a day 7 days a week. Except when you take your 34. Every hour in on duty status. Now $2 a mile at 3k miles is not bad. But you already know that most companys are not paying company drivers $2 a mile. More like .50 cents per mile, and in some cases much less.
