Both the D700 and the D300 have interchangeable focussing screens, so I installed a split image screen in both of these cameras and so they work great on my old film lenses which I chipped with dandelion chips so they communicate with the cameras and don’t have to program them in every time. 12 megs is more than enough resolution for 2’x3’ prints. It focuses really good in low light even better than my Z5 which hunts in low light. The Z6 is apparently better in this regard. I always enjoy your banter and your reviews are great as well. Regards Gerry
@@gerryhardman9060 I’ve never heard of that before. Interesting
Recently, I saw a photographer/youtuber setting the Nikon Z f to program Iso, shutter speed, etc, while you mentioned you barely use the dials; this photographer set the front buttons and one on the back for Iso, apertures and exposure! Also, I saw another video where the photographer was using the viewsceeen as commands and shootings while his eyes on the viewfinder! I think the importance is to configure the camera in accordance to photographer's needs
Double duty with the Fuji GFX: this is an awesome lens. Sorry to hear that you sold it.
@@WallImages Now I have the D700 I wish I had it back!
I just got the 70-200 F2.8 and I love it !!
It is the best! what do you take with it?
Hello Vaha. Apologies in advance if this has been asked or I missed the answer, but as a Z6II owner myself, how does the 35mm 1.4g focus on your Z6 using the adapter? Is it as fast as on a native F mount body? I do not shoot video so I'm only worried about the AF for photography. I am thinking of getting the 35mm 1.4g instead of the newer Z version, so I can use it on older Nikon bodies as well. Many thanks.
@@robothehobo In my experience the focus speed is very good. No issue there. Just the ftz can be annoying for handling
@@RussandLoz Thanks for the feedback, appreicate it much. Was set on the Z mount 35mm then started to consider picking up a D700 as a backup camera. Having an F mount lens obviously means I can use it on both systems (having used an FTZ adapter, I agree the front heaviness might be a challenge).
@ Recently made a dog video using a d700. Worth seeing
Absolutely fantastic photographer, if you like he’s stuff take a look at the film doc war photographer with James Nachtway. And shooting Robert King, there fantastic
Excellent pictures, thanks a lot. I like the lens because it's so compact (ideal for travelling), the 35mm f/1.4. lenses (MF or AF-S) are bigger and heavier.
The 35mm 1.4g? Yeah, the one I have is so nice to handle on a big body of the d700. Good quality too
Love the channel. Love and still use a D700. A unique sensor. Love shooting in fog. However, this 🇨🇦 cannot agree that 0C is cold 😉
@@davidroberts6766 It’s all relative! Lol. Thanks, though it also went frosty at -4 too!

Which camera for wildlife photography z6ii or z7ii?
@@tomasjanicina4024 I could only recommend a new gen camera for autofocus tracking. But z7 for megapixels. I have a new video discussing camera options worth seeing
Which camera for wildlife photography z6ii or z7ii?
The Nikon 105 F 1.4 is on my list. I own the Nikon 85 F1. 8 F Mount lens.
I have a D700 and recently bought and sold my used D800 and D810. I found thaem either slow, or hit and miss with focus and colour rendition. Always test shots. Picked up the D700 and its no nonense-set up, shoot and you get the shot. Was showing family and friens holiday and other photos-it was the D700 photos that were liked the most.
@@cartermac64 it does seem that way. I have a new fog walk video where this also happens
у вас 1.2 диафрагма вы снимаете кадры на сцене) где есть освещение ОТКУДА такие ШУМЫ на фотографиях? у вас 102 000 ISO стоит чтоли в настройках
Good and useful video 😊 BUT !!... I always get irritated when people talk about how cameras are now better in high isos and therefore make bright apertures unnecessary... 🤪🔨 Wide apertures' main benefit is depth of field! And it's true in ALL lighting conditions! Hence why an F/1.8 will always be useful, even in daylight. And contrary to what legend has it, even more so for wide angles where, by nature of their usual scenarios, it is more difficult to blur background and foreground 😎
I love your calm and soothing narration. The photos are wonderful!
@@MomentsFound Thanks, I wanted to be with the moment. I went out again yesterday in the frost and fog
really enjoying the D700 coverage! thank you!
Thanks, it's building up quite a connection with me
I was out with my D700 and ZF as well today, out and about the streets of Hong Kong.
@@ApertureWalk shame the d700 doesn’t capture video!
nice phtos with nice combo. 35mm f2d, great microcontrast and good minimum focus distance. d700, unique color science. didn't try them in fog though. your experiment with these classic gears is inspiring.
Thanks Eric, I am enjoying the experience, shame it doesn't capture video with those tones!
There’s something relaxing about being out early in the fog, when no one else is around. Great vid & images, thanks & happy 2025! 😎📷
The good thing is it's staying foggy all day so I don't have to get up early. But I get your point
Very brave to go out in that cold. It paid off though as you got some really decent shots. Well done.
Thanks Stephen, it was colder today with a frost and fog!
@@RussandLoz I've been observing the weather on your side of the pond and it does look pretty chilly over there. It's practically your summer over here in Malta.
@@stephenspiteri_zunkus How hot does it get over there?
@@RussandLoz in summer averages 35 Celsius in the shade. If you walk in the sun it would be over 40. Nice if you come for a holiday but tiring if you live here. Only relief is air conditioning and swimming in our beaches.

Camera strap goes around your neck first rule I was taught in 1962 never dropped a camera both hands on the camera the camera to the eye to get proper framing elbows tucked in to your side to keep away any shake
@@stevenmccaughan2752 Camera are too heavy for me to have around my neck. On my shoulder is best. I also haven’t dropped a camera yet. But yeah body posture is impotent when shooting low shutter speeds 😊
So beautiful! the photo at 9:10 is exceptionnal! Fog photos are so special - where I live we don't have any fog so when I go to a foggy place, I try to take as many photos as I can. In the UK, this is less of a problem ;-)
Hi Russ, another enjoyable video ... thanks for sharing another grand day out. Always reassuring to see that you don't need the most up to date gear to get good images ... so easy to get zoned into GAS.
@@steveboys5369 Yeah I love gear but also know any camera will do great! It’s all about the feeling it makes for you
Amazing images and the fog really can add a whole new dimension to photography by enhancing a scene and injecting some intrigue. Question... The aperture of the 35mm F2 D lens can be locked down and you can use the D700 to set aperture, but I noticed that you unlock the aperture and adjust it manually on the lens itself. Is this because you prefer to change it that way, or do you have a different reason? I don't think it makes a difference if you set it in camera or on the lens itself, correct? I'm looking forward to the shots of the snow and I hope you maybe visit this same location so we can see the difference between snow and fog. Just remember to wear the correct shoes next time. Boots would probably be better!
@@MookieMc Yeah I prefer to use an aperture ring when casually shooting, feels fun. The whole point of a d700 really. I’m still finding my way with it as a connection but yeah the photos are different from mirrorless. Thanks Mookie 😊
Great video. Very enjoyable. Looks cold!!!!
@@RichardCookphotography Thanks, my lips can’t stumbling words!
Speaking of 35. I see alot of youtubers claim that 35 f1.8S lacks character. Do you agree with that?
@@loihpatli I’ve been quite vocal about the inadequacy of the 35 z lens. It feels slow focussing, soft at 1.8, has image rendition issues and unpleased edgy out of focus background. Desperately needs needs an update
@RussandLoz sorry, i probably missed that. So what's the alternative in your opinion?
@ I use the 28mm 1.4. But it’s using the ftz which is a bit uncomfortable. Really, z glass is supposed to be clinical and cooler tones so we can put our own character on with editing. F mount lenses seem to have character.
@RussandLoz yeah, i made alot of research of that 28 f1.4. There are only few of them on ebay and the new ones cost too much for my budget. I thought about sigma 28 f1.4 but as far as i understood it's not too sharp. By the way, what can you say about AF motor noise of Nikkor's 28 in video mode?
@ I haven’t used the 28 for video much but yeah f mount are nosiey
We dipped to freezing overnight here in central Florida. No fog just severe clear and cold. I need to charge up the d700, but it’s nice and warm inside under the cat.

@@NikCan66 I’m still finding my way with the d700. Building a connection. Maybe I should try an older lens?
@@RussandLoz I had some very special results with telezooms with birds, especially the AF-D 80-200mm (one touch) and even the 200-500mm in good light. The special sensor of the D700 makes special images even of animals.
@ my 400 2.8 is f mount after all!
@@RussandLozyes, true, that can give you splendid photos even of pigeons and sparrows! The light is always so special with the D700 and it has a good AF indeed.
Don't ever sell that 35 F2D or the universe will turn against you! lol You cannot beat the 3D rendering that low element count lenses have.

@@keithsandercock1412 Going with any camera is a good thing 😊
Love the D700, still rocking mine when you need a sense of reality. Mirrorless can be soulless after a while.
@@ianslingsby3415 I am enjoying it, but still finding a connection. Maybe need more character lenses?
A very good lens, certainly when you consider the price. And when you go for larger animals, you can zoom out to include some surroundings as it doesn't need to be only portraits. Yes, it is a little slow, but then it will force you to keep your skills at a level
@@pleclere it goes get good results especially on mirrorless with autofocus. Though the 180-600 is much nicer with handling and goes to 600mm
This has been VERY helpful! This is exactly the review I've been looking for. Comparing the actual pictures of the from both cameras...and considering used prices. I'm not a pro...I don't care about the fine details and pixels in the corner. I'm planning to upgrade my old D5600 to a mirrorless camera. I will be going on my trip of a lifetime on an African Safari in a few month and want to have my new camera by then. However, I've been going back and forth over a z6 vs z7 vs v6ii vs z7ii...I plan to buy a used camera. I was leaning towards the z7 because it had more megapixels...but I don't know that I need that many megapixels...and the z6 seems to be better in low light. I think I'm going to go with a z6 or z6ii and a the 28-400mm lens. Will be going to Italy and Greece later in the year and Galapagos early next year. So I think the 28-400mm with the low light capability of the z6 would be a good all around travel camera setup. Thank you!
Glad to help, we have a new video to compare the new mirrorless gen vs old, I would highly recommend watching that
Fantastic ambition and video 👍🙂
Thanks, I'd love to go to the Arctic, but your videos on how harsh it looks puts me off! lol
I wasn’t impressed by the 200-500 - decent IQ in fairness but very poor at acquiring focus (I used it on a D7500 - no slouch). My old 300/f4D + 1.4 TC was a better wildlife lens. I’m seeing the 400/f4.5 as the successor to the 300/f4 - light and effective.
On Mirrorless the focus is a lot better for old lenses too. But the lens was very imbalanced and long focal length through. The 180-600 i'm reviewing is much better
I recently got a Nikon Zf and I'm looking to aquire a second backup body, that's affordable and takes my Z mount lenses. Honestly, I’m leaning towards the Nikon Z5 or Z6II. Nearly everyone I've spoken to who actually owns a Z6ii (or Z5), LOVES it. I love my Zf, but I want something that will act as a more ergonomic and compact backup, with similar menus. I shoot portraits and headshots and an occasional family session or engagement. No events, sports or wildlife. I don't need speed, and I don’t plan on doing video with this backup. I played with a Z5 and a Z6ii in the camera store recently and they both felt really nimble and great to use. In use, I couldn’t really tell much difference between the Z5 and Z6ii. Both really nice. Would you recommend the Z6ii as a backup to my Zf? If I get the Z5 I can afford more glass, but maybe the better body is a wiser choice? I would get a Z6, but I don’t want to go that far back and I want to get it relatively new or new.
@@babyboy1971 If you don’t need the new autofocus ability then either of those will be fine for what you do. I have a new mirrorless guide on a newer video
I had both the 1.2 and 1.8. I find even at 1.8, the 1.2 is faster and better in lower light simply due to the larger glass. It was a very touch call between the two. So tough that I don’t feel the value for about $1300 USD more is there for the 1.2. If you’re on a tighter budget, don’t hesitate to get the 1.8. You won’t be missing anything except weight.
@@Kynetguy Yeah at times I can’t find any difference when I shoot at 1.2 or 1.8 then at times a can. I often have the dilemma of which is best or needed. I wish they released a 1.4 pro lens. Or a smaller version of the 1.2
@ I agree. Something in between might be a good seller. I kept the 1.2 and sent the 1.8 back. I shoot a lot with the 50mm, so I don’t regret it. But there isn’t a lot I capture with it that the 1.8 would not have done just fine. The 1.2 is a lot of lense to carry around though.
I’d venture to say if I was fortunate enough to own a Z 400mm F2.8 and a Z 50mm F1.2 - and doing pro event work - I’d already have a backup Z8 or at the very least a Z6 II - rather than get caught out having to buy an emergency Zf. Just my opinion 😊
I want the Zf however as my Z9 and Z8 dwarf my 35mm f1.2 MF lens 😂
The ZF is very capable, no different than a Z6iii really apart from grip. But sure, a second z8 is my ambition eventually.
I've had this for over a year now cos I couldn't afford the Nikon. Fantastic lens. Plenty sharp enough. Focuses well. This is smaller and lighter than the Nikon too.
@@steventhomas231 Yes it’s a great lens. Just reviewing the 35 f2 and hoping for the same
You kinda missed the whole concept, its Chinese, they pay their workers nothing, yep, they can now make some good stuff, look at the car EV industry, they are basically screwing the world. If you want to support screwing the rest of the world then go for it. You only have to look very closely at what is happening economically in South East Asia, China is basically trashing everything. I saw new roading in Cambodia, literally falling apart as it was being built whereas the Japanese roading was still intact after 20 years. I saw miles of half built new builds abandoned, just complete trashing of the environment. There is a much bigger picture here if you care to look.
You might want to check the weight you have shown for the Z 400 f4.5 - not 2150gms but is 1245gms. Big difference! I used to own the F mount 400 f2.8E FL VR and used all the TC's with it with superb results. The 400 f2.8E FL VR is simply a stunning lens and works even better on the Z mount, again with all the TC's. However, it was getting a little heavy for me and sold it and now own the Z 600 f4 TC which is about 1 kg lighter when you add the FTZ, 1.4x TCIII to the 400 f2.8E FL VR for equivalence to the Z 600 f4 TC. That's a large weight saving! I found I was almost always using the 400 f2.8 + 1.4x TCIII and thus why I went with the Z 600 f4 TC.
@@LanceMrB The 2125 is together with the z8 body. But yeah maybe in time I’ll be able to get the new 400 2.8. But like you I often use it with teleconverters so maybe a 600 f4 would make sense
@10:06 read the instructions. Its all there.
I love your laid back videos! What I would like to see is content for "limited budget" photographers, like"rediscovering" of older gear. F-lenses adapted on Z bodies, and other cheaper lens options. I enjoy all the videos you make, but as nature and wildlife became my primary interest a few years ago I have especially enjoyed Russ' journey with the 400/4.5 and then going for an F-mount 400/2.8E.
It's interesting to add Sirui 85 f1.4 to the competition
@@loihpatli I’d love to see 1.4’s this year!
Though saying that I want pro line 1.4's, not the 1.4's they released last year
So, have you compared both these lenses?
@@loihpatli We are hoping to build a relationship with Nikon so we can. But with the reviews I’ve seen, the 1.4 range are softer, slower focussing, expensive and have image rendition issues. I consider them a step back
Great review and yes, the AF-S 28 f1.4E ED was always a bit of a darkhorse but oh boy is it sublime. I just added it to my kit to be used on both my D6 as well as my Z9 with the FTZ II.
@@ecycled3d Despite how good the lens is, I’m ready for a z version. To loose the ftz and it had massive distortion at close range. But doubt it will anytime soon as the 35 hadn’t been released yet
