Jean Ritchie - Loving Hannah (c.1990s)
'Bally Boat' 2:30
As you can see in this thread mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=115504, Jean Ritchie claimed that ‘bally’ came from something like ‘good’ in a Celtic language, which does not appear to be accurate. The word is more likely ‘bawley boat’ (a type of English sailing vessel), or a corruption of ‘bonny boat’, a phrase used in other traditional ballads.
2:58 The final syllable of the song is spoken, not sung. This is a feature of traditional Irish language sean-nós singing.
Here is a traditional Irish version sung by Paddy Tunney
th-cam.com/video/qcglJd8yzrU/w-d-xo.html
The melody is similar in many ways to the Ritchie version, but is closer to the famous 'Dives and Lazarus' or 'Star of the County Down' tune.

I think the first version is orally transmitted and the other versions may be learned from printed music sheets. It sounds archaic compare to the other versions because of its apparent pentatonic characteristics, that it actually sounds like some traditional Appalachian tunes.

One can see here how tap dancing, clog dancing, square dancing and old timey music mountain arose in the US, then country, bluegrass and on to rock.
