This is where a fingernail set for doing your nails fileing etc. would comin in so handy much smaller attachments will get in little cracks that that big drill can’t get to

Hi hello, I found out about this video from Charlie at the stitchery and had to watch immediately. I don’t have much to add to the discussion other than to thank you for being vocal about this and to rant about how much this sizing nonsense has affected me! Sizing being so ridiculous and also clothing made for women being made to fit tighter in certain places or even just issues with fabric clinging weirdly (idk if anyone else can relate to the “this shirt is so soft!” And putting it on and it fitting just fine but feeling like you can’t breathe because the fabric is sticking to your stomach) all kinds of things like that that nobody ever openly talked to me about hugely affected the way I saw myself. I will always remember being in the store with my mother and constantly telling her from the dressing room, no these pants will not fit, please find me a bigger size, because I either couldn’t pull them all the way up over my hips or because they wouldn’t button over my stomach. And she didn’t seem to believe me, saying she had worn the same size that I couldn’t fit into after having multiple children (which is absolute bull btw and I was also trying on junior sizes im pretty sure). I remember going swimsuit shopping with my best friend and her mom who were a lot skinnier than me and there being absolutely nothing that could look good on me. I never fell into disordered eating, simply because the few times I thought about it, luckily, my wonderful body protected me and simply would not let me, but I definitely had body dysmorphia. I still look back at pictures from when I was younger and wonder how I look so different from what I imagined myself looking like at the time. And I still feel pretty icky every time I grow out of a garment that I love and I choose very carefully what kind of clothes I buy to prevent myself from falling into any bad thinking (high waisted pants for the win !) I just started learning to sew, and I’m really excited to get to a point where I can self draft to fit my body just how it is. Even now I saw a pattern with a sizing chart where my measurements were above any of the sizes listed, so I’m really looking forward to throwing what I “should” fit into out the window.

This video helped me, thanks for making it. In starting to sew my own clothes I've also realized that whenever an item of clothing doesn't work for my body, my body can't possibly be the problem, the item of clothing has to be. I get a lot of bloating, so my waist measurement can vary quite drastically, and I used to just shove myself into the clothes that fit my non-bloated body and blame myself for being physically uncomfortable in them. But now I am realizing that no, my body has not failed at staying one size, the clothes have failed me. My body requires clothes that can adapt to a changing waist circumference, and there's nothing wrong with that. And nobody can tell me that I should change to fit my clothes: my clothes should change to fit me, because they are supposed to serve me.

Really tempted to try this out soon!

I use pilot frixion pens to draw on the boning lines on the inside of the canvas. Disappears with heat. I believe the people in history used pencil to draw the lines. Some extant pieces have lines you can still see. Regardless, the lining added in afterward covers all that, so all is good.

It seems to me that the idea that there's no such thing as a standard body has never been forgotten when it comes to nice suits for men. They are always made by tailors who take tons of measurements or if they're off the rack, an alteration service is included. It's also widely known that bridal gowns need to be adjusted to everyone's particular, unique body and it's understood that those gowns will be made to measure and that's also why those gowns (when well chosen and tailored well) look great on people of all sizes and shapes. Maybe that's also why so many women go a bit overboard for weddings. They see that gown as the one and only piece of clothing in their lifetime that will be made especially for their body. This is also a major part of the reason why fashion houses hire models who are as straight up and down as possible. It's easier for them to fit into anything of any size. This in turn promotes eating disorders among both models and non-models. I think this also gives people the idea that tailored clothes are too "expensive" or "luxurious". A) You can do it yourself. I just had to nip in a bit on the side of the shorts I'm wearing because it was bulging out a bit in the wrong spot. Handsewing. Needle and thread. 15 minutes. Invaluable skill for mending little holes and lots of other stuff. B) You can find someone locally who has a sewing machine and bit of skill or who is learning. Give them something low bar or start with a low risk, low cost experiment and see how they do. Ramp it up from there. You can barter for it too. I'll trade you cakes for sewing or garden vegetables for tailoring. Bingo. Your clothes are tailored.

The cloak is wonderful and I would keep it for fun. The trousers seem like they are worth keeping, then making a top or a couple tops specifically to go with them, that you'd like to wear, so you have an outfit option with the trousers having matching shirt/blouse. I always find it easier to have specific tops that work with one or two skirts, shorts, etc. since it makes it easier when I'm picking out what to wear, "this" automatically goes with "these" options sort of thing.

I have to admit I always sew the crotch seam before closing the trousers up - it’s just easier 🤷🏼‍♀️

Good spoon budgeting! As an EDS sufferer, I have had to learn that there comes a point when pushing on is pointless as you will spend the next sewing session correcting the mistakes from this one 🥴🤷🏼‍♀️

When I did a pair of half boned stays I think I marked the first line then inserted the bone, used a zipper foot to create the channel

Back in the 1980’s and 90’s here in the UK, you used to get sewing patterns with women’s magazines that you had to send off for if you didn’t get it on subscription. I used to regularly get the Prima so I still have many Prima patterns but other magazines did it too 🥰

This was so informative and hopeful. I've never fit in almost anything off the rack because I'm both plus sized and also tall. Just started sewing my own clothes and just having a skirt that fits me the way I want it to is so healing.

I thought they were quite flattering on you & I'm sure a black top or sweater/jumper would look amazing with it. And the there's the history. Tiny moment to note, but in your flare pattern where you slashed the extra from the back outline to fold in to make the front piece -- genius! I tend to cut along the entire discrepancy leaving only an inch or so to hinge on, and its neither convenient nor sturdy. Bravo!
