Overwintering Flowers for Spring Bloom
มุมมอง 2Kปีที่แล้ว
Early spring blooms are so wonderful after a long winter! It's not hard to have early blooms in the garden- the trick is to plant the right cold-loving seedlings in the fall. We use frost cloth (remay) as extra insurance, but here in Zone 7a the following cutting garden plants have overwintered well for us without any remay or protection: Bupleurum Larkspur Nigella Agrostemma Bachelors Buttons ...

Great video. The stakes look to be 4’ x 8’, and the two sets are about 2’ and 3’ above the soil. This is a very simple way to stake and we will try it next year.
This was so awesome. Thank you very much. I like your teaching method with the visual images…2 thumbs up😊
Thank you so much for the info. I am in Zone 7b. I thought I was about to be to late to start seed for Zinnias. Its 2 weeks into May. Planting now. 🏃🏾🏃🏾🏃🏾🏃🏾
Bonjour!
I literally love growing zinnias!! People walking past my property often stop and take photos of my flower field 🤩🤩🤩 I only grow small scale and just for myself to pick and give to friends. I’m not a florist by any means 😆 and not a farmer either (yet). Maybe one day I can grow on a larger scale and sell to florists but for not it’s just good for my soul.
Such a lovely video! Thanks so much! ❤ I'm just a hobby gardener, but I love to get reliable information from the experts. Zinnias are my absolute favorites! I bought 4 packets of semi dwarf pumila mixed Zinnia seeds for $1 from my local dollar store, and they were the talk of my neighborhood! I was able to cram 4 plants together in 8" planters, they bloomed their heads off until frost! Gardening is fun already, but getting the most bang for our buck, is a whole different feeling! Everyone should begin gardening with flowers like Zinnias ❤❤❤ these are feel-good flowers even for the black-thumbed!
thank you!
Does blood meal work on repelling ground hogs?
Awesome presentation. I learned a lot. Thank you so much!
Thank you this was so very helpful and gracious for you to provide us!
I have a sunflower that a deer took a taste and it it's now branching!! I'm in Florida zone 8b with microclimates of 9,10!! I started my sunflowers in January!! Last year I planted them in February and they were the best ones the entire year!!! I hope to a set up like you in years to come!!! I plan classes as well!! I have a micro farm but you have to start somewhere??? I was a Nurse for over twenty years and I can't do that anymore at my age but growing flowers and vegetables are the up and coming business NOW!! TFS your experience!! I would love to see more!! I will look at your website as well!!
best video on cut flowers i've seen YET!
This was so awesome and helpful! Thank you for all the info. Looking forward to more videos. Alana Zone 4
Fabulous run through for those of us who need a little reminder boost, or for some who may just be starting out! 🌻
Thank you for the great information and tips. I planted zinnias for the first time back in 2022 and now I'm hooked. I do like the Oklahoma series and they did perform well last year, but I guess I prefer flowers that are larger in scale.
Wow so much great information, thank you 🙏
Whey is good for powdery mildew.
Great information and inspiration! I love your teaching style! More videos please! I am in zone 7 with clay soil. I started messing around with flowers last year because my daughter told me I have a knack for it. My zinnias were beautiful and immediately I became addicted. Lol I’ve ordered a bunch more Varieties for this year and hope to have a beautiful cut flower garden in addition to my vegetable garden.
So glad it was helpful!! Hope you check out our online classes- I love talking about flower gardening with gardeners! www.butterbeefarm.com/onlineclasses/2022/12/2/flower-gardening-with-butterbee
Oooh, I'm down the road from you guys. I'll look around and see what u offer for teaching.
Wonderful! You can see all our online classes here: www.butterbeefarm.com/onlineclasses/2022/12/2/flower-gardening-with-butterbee, and we are launching our Plant Shop (unique seedlings for flower gardens) on Monday!
Thank you! I like the idea of putting them In the soil to sprout. May have to try that this year. 🎉
Great video! Do you use that twine method for lisianthus too??
Thanks so much!! We use a different method for lisianthus- I'm teaching an online class about lisianthus soon, you can see details here! www.butterbeefarm.com/gardening/flower-gardening-with-butterbee
Thank you for all the great information and tips!
OMG those lisianthus are amazing. I’m in the UK and tried growing these last year but never succeeded have you got any tips for growing these? I’ve recently bought more seeds which are called Echo White F1 hybrid if that helps at all.
Thank you so much! We love growing lissie, and I actually teach a detailed class about it for gardeners! You can register on our site, or the direct link is here www.butterbeefarm.com/gardening/flower-gardening-with-butterbee Looking forward to seeing you in the virtual world!
I’ve just found your channel and I’ve got to say it’s one of the best for giving clear, no nonsense information. I live in the UK and have tried to grow zinnia the last two years and have been very disappointed. However,I’m not one to give in so I’ve got more seeds and I’m trying again this year following your instructions. Fingers crossed.
Thank you for the kind words!! :)
Please make more videos? I’m very interested in what you’re doing. Thank you!

This was a wonderful video. Thank you for sharing. Does the bloodmeal work to deter squirrels from jumping up to eat my sunflower blooms. Last summer the squirrels raged war on my flowers and ate every single sunflower bloom. I was so sad!
That is super sad! I'm not sure that blood meal would deter squirrels, but it's certainly worth a try!
i have tried zinnias but they never did well for me. i always had problems with earwigs .
What a informative video. Your tips and tricks I will apply to my growing and harvest this year of zinnias and sunflowers. Thanks for sharing. Happy gardening!!
Wonderful thank you!!
Thank you for this video. I was watching another TH-camr and they mentoined growing this plant, but had no tutorial yet. So, when your video poped up, I had to watch it. I have learned a great deal.
Hi there, I was wondering if you direct sow or start in trays? I have a big bird issue where they pull up my flower and vegetable seedlings as soon as they pop out of the ground.😩
Sometimes we direct seed sunflowers, but for the most part we seed sunnies and zinnias into trays first. We can protect them better in our propagation house! I'd suggest checking out our "Overwintering Flowers for Spring Bloom" video to learn how you can use remay (frost cloth) over plants. You can do this in the summertime too to protect young seedlings from birds! Just make sure to get the thinnest remay available so the plants don't get too hot!
Thank you for the list of the overwintering flowers. I am little bit late.. we have snow on the ground but not in the hoophouses.
I’m so excited! Great info for a new hobby flower farmer who’s trying to figure it all out. I still work as a paramedic and have a million other responsibilities so it makes it difficult to read an endless book recommendation list. I learned SO much here! Thank you!!! 💚
That makes me so happy to hear!! It truly makes my day!!!
Great tips on the staking!
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful tips, thanks for sharing
@@veleriasingletary3556 So glad to hear that! :)
Great information for someone like me who is a beginner who is starting a small home cut flower garden. ❤thank you
