I have 79 Piper Archer II with the IIIB autpilot. No vertical guidance. I keep hearing these old autopilots need the vacuum operated artificial horizon to operate. Is there ANYTHING out there that will run the autopilot without a vacuum system?

Sure. I used the G5s with a Castleberry Electric AI for years before installing the Bendix-King AeroCruze 100 in my PA32. No vacuum system needed. www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/castleberry300.php

@@azcharlie2009 when I bought the plane in 2014, it already had the electric AI installed as a backup. I just kept it in the plane when I upgraded to the G5s so it would drive the IIIB autopilot. Now I have the digital 2-axis autopilot driven by the G5s.

@@bernie_hirsch Since I watched your video, I've been thinking about something: What if you had an electrical failure in IFR? Do those things have separate battery back ups? It might be a good thing to keep the vacuum operated artificial horizon, since my autopilot needs it anyway. A Garmin autopilot is so darn expensive! My shop has been trying to convince me to do 2 G5s and a Garmin GPS of some kind. Then, move the vacuum artificial horizon over. He said the Garmin 500s are over $20K installed! So, keeping the vacuum system is the least expensive option for me.

Since posting this video last year, Microsoft has updated its MSFS software to include multi-monitor support. That means instead of stretching the view out the front window across all three monitors, I can now designate a 90-degree view out of each side window (+90 for the right window, -90 for the left window). When looking out of the side windows I now see a bit of the interior of the airplane around the edges of the screen, and look out over the wing to see the ground (in a low-wing airplane). It's fantastically realistic!

The MSFS panel is below the front monitor and I can use the hat switch on the yoke to pan down to it if I want. I just set the front view to be looking out the window. I set each of the side views to 90 degrees. You can actually still see a bit of the interior of the airplane around the edges of the window as you look out toward each wing. Seems very realistic.
