There is a separate MacLeod Septs Project at FTDNA with 179 members. There are 14 McClures in the project, with an even split between those who indicate their earliest known ancestor is from Ireland vs Scotland. None of the members of the MacLeod Septs Project, including the McClures, share a common ancestor with the chiefly line of MacLeods. So, if the MacLeods who went to Ulster morphed into McClures, these MacLeods were not descendants of the chiefly line of MacLeods. The McClures in the project do appear to have a common ancestor who is genetically unrelated to the MacLeod clan (R-FGC3251, a man born c. 1100). There is also a McClure Project at FTDNA with 296 members.

​My 6th great grandmother was Jemima McClure. When I followed her ancestors line back to John McClure/MacLeod 10th of Gesto. He is the son of Murdo MacLeod 9th of Gesto and Glenelg. They are both decendants of Malcolm 3rd clan Cheif. The Lands of Gesto which is the waternish arm of Skye and Glenelg is land on the mainland are lands given to his ancestorsby Malcolm 3rd clan cheif. Why the name change to McClure I dont know. It happened the same time they moved from Skye to Ayrshire in the mid 1600s. John McClure/MacLeod got in a bunch of trouble for killing some McCaskills I guess. He had to pay a big fine and lost some of his titled lands. I guess about the same time King James IV confiscated the lands of Gesto and Glenelg. These McClure ancestors oof mine that came to America just before the Revolution and were Patriots in the Warwere really MacLeods. They were from Brookfield, Massachusetts. There decendants migrated to Vermont, New York, and Pennsylvania. Then later to all the the United States. My MacLeod ancestors also married Macdonald women from Sleat and Glengarry. I assume most MacLeods from Skye have McDonald ancestors as well. Thanks for the video. .

There is no real difference. The name of the clan is MacLeod but this often gets shortened to McLeod, and there are other spellings. In some parts of the world, e.g., Australia and the southern US, McLeod is most common. In Scotland, MacLeod is more common than McLeod. But again, there is no meaningful difference.

Even in my family, some of my relatively recent ancestors used McLeod and some used MacLeod!

@@markkmacleod My Grandmother I believe it was threw the A in ours. Don't know why, no difference. Red River Ancestory is a great place for Canadian MacLeods.

If I understand correctly, your MacLeod line comes from a female ancestor. Therefore, your Y DNA will not reflect this MacLeod lineage. It would be great if you could find a male MacLeod descendant of Ashmotr McLeod who would be willing to take a Y DNA test. Otherwise, your autosomal test results (e.g., from Ancestry, Family Finder) would likely show some MacLeod DNA which will be useful when searching for closer relatives. These autosomal results are unlikely to help proving this connection back to the chiefly line.

No, in the Q&A on Skye I showed DNA evidence of Norse origins for Leòd. Several Norwegian DNA tests match MacLeods.

I’m a bit confused, the presentation appears to show that several Macleod groups have Scandinavian roots but not the direct paternal line group A. So how can you say Leod the first Macleod Chief was Norse and not Celtic? Professor Jim Wilson thinks the paternal line of the Macleods and the MacNeils was Pictish.

Let's call it an open question. I think Norse roots for Clan MacLeod makes more sense. We have close Norwegian Y-DNA cousins who would have to descend from Picts brought to Norway, perhaps as slaves. Seems unlikely. The long-standing history of the clan says Leod was of Norse descent. Many MacLeods with clear Viking roots descend from people who assumed the MacLeod surname and often married MacLeod women in the chiefly line. Would this have happened if descendants of Leod were Picts?

In terms of AA DNA (autosomal) tests, the standard line is about 5-7 generations. Mathematically, you lose half of the influence of an ancestor with each generation. However, I've seen many, many cases where low cM match levels appear in descendants who are further away than 7 generations from the common ancestor. I'm fortunate to have the atDNA results from 12 family members spanning 4 generations. I've found over 100 DNA matches that lead to common ancestors who are my great-great-great grandparents. About 10% of the time, there is a weak match to the youngest generation in my family who are 8 generations removed from these common ancestors. Endogamy can also help boost match levels and push the limits beyond 7 generations, but you'll probably never be able to untangle this!

Re a forum for MacLeod DNA, we manage the project at FamilyTree DNA which is a collection of DNA results from over 500 MacLeods. You're welcome to contribute your DNA results, especially Y DNA, and we can review and comment. There is also a place to post questions.
