So glad I found your channel. So many times I just stare at my list (I’m a list maker) of todos and maybe check off one or two tasks and call it good lol. You are my inspiration to get more done. In fact I have a list starring me in the face right now. I use really pretty paper and fancy penmanship to make it feel muy importante . Kind of a weird comment, but while you were cleaning your fridge, I noticed the fridge swings open to block access from your fridge to your counter. You can change the way your door swings so it opens up the other way, allowing access to your food/counter easily.

My parents own a 1200 square foot home for 50 years. Mom passed almost 20 years ago, but had been very organized. Dad on the other hand is something of a pack rat. Not quite a hoarder, but certainly leaning that way because he can't part with an empty coffee can or plastic bag, and saves broken coffee machines for parts, etc. I moved out of state 18 years ago and don't get to go back often, and it had been 10 years since my last visit. This past year he started to have health issues and I went down. I was so overwhelmed by all the things that had not moved since my last visit. Things never used. Things not even "seen" anymore because he is blind to it all. We *finally* got him to consider parting with things by pointing out that all the "useful" things he was holding onto he no longer had a need for, but other people in his community could have a use for them, but would never get to use them until he died if he was just storing them in his house. He also doesn't like to throw things in the landfill, but we convinced him he had made his own home a landfill by keeping them. My sister in law is working with him on non-sentimental items and they were able to almost empty 2 closets! Now, he has not gotten rid of a single thing of my mom's, so when he passes, I will be dealing with both of their things, unless we can get him to chose the important things and purge the rest. He is insistent that he will not go into a nursing home, rehab facility, or move in with me or my brother, so its hard to convince him that he could be forced to move if his health deteriorates. I can tell you that having been in his house for a week, when I got home I threw myself into Swedish Death Cleaning. I do not want my son to have to sort through all my crap, and wonder what things were important to me or what is important to save. Sadly it takes seeing your parents in this phase of life to catch yourself before you get to that same point. I sympathize with having to work on your own home to make it able to accommodate them moving in, while simultaneously needing to do so much work on their stuff/home before they can even move. The task list must be long, the prospect must be overwhelming, and the distance is a major frustration. And none of that even touches on the health issues, or seeing your parents start to fade. I envy that you are as close as you are to them. I'm 600 miles away, so its not doable to make frequent trips, and I have livestock I can't leave for long periods. Again, mental notes to consider as we age to make things easier on ourselves and our children. Sending you a big hug!!!

We keep extra trash bags in the bottom of each can. It saves time; and replacements are always available. We have rarely had a bag leak into the extras.

Hi there!! Such great motivation, my guest bedroom is typically my room where things get stored or forgotten until I cant take it anymore lol. I always enjoy hearing about homeschooling and different methods. I'm sure you'll figure out the perfect layout in the future friend! As for the donation bin we usually have a bag within our office space and every few months things get donated lol. Have a great week!

Where do you keep a donation bin in your house? Somewhere out of the way but easy to access, so piles on the flat surfaces don’t stack up!

Thank you for helping your parents! It is so typical as we age to let cleaning slide. Their home looks fine. Everyone collects clutter. Consider how long they have lived there and both their failing health. I am 76 years old and feel bad asking my family for help. I am trying to find someone to hire in Nashville TN to help me. It is not a one day job. I am trying to pare down to relieve the burden when I pass. I am an invalid and can barely keep up with cooking and lightly cleaning my kitchen and bathroom. Please be considerate and not say things like "this is just junk" even though we are old we still have feelings. Thank you for posting.

What a lovely daughter you are to help them out in this way.

It might help to measure the spaces in your house that will be assigned to your parents and make floor plans. So when they are going through their items, they can choose their favorite things to fit into those spaces first and set the rest aside. When confronted with the reality of the finite spaces, they may make better choices. For example, if they will share 48 inches of clothes hanging space, they should measure off 48 inches in their current closet and fill it with their favorite clothing. Whatever doesn't fit needs to go. Resist the urge to rent storage space or box it up in the garage. Once they've moved into your house, you could have an auctioneer come in and auction off what's left in their house.

Those trolls who send negative and ridiculous comments are pathetic. They are the true definition of TROLLS! Nay sayers! ETC. clutter happens. For soma y reasons. Time flies by so quickly. Stuff happens. You guys…are the angels, bright spots of love the world is in desperate need of. Keep on keeping on.🥰

I'm a baby boomer, and realize how difficult it is (and has been) to decide on what to keep/trash/donate, etc. But, this has been my reality since the passing of my husband two years ago. 👍🏾👍🏾

You did a fantastic job... and you are very caring. Most people just label people as hoarders without realizing how hurtfull it is, and they do not see the disadvantages you have when you get older.
