Francis Collins: Covid, faith, polarised politics and the battle for truth
Francis Collins is a physician and geneticist whose groundbreaking work has led to the discovery of the cause of cystic fibrosis among other diseases. He led the Human Genome Project which first sequenced the entire human DNA, established the science-faith organisation BioLogos, and has gone on to serve 3 US presidents as the director of the National Institutes of Health.
Francis’ new book is titled ‘The Road To Wisdom: On truth, science, faith and trust’ and covers some of the controversies and challenges he has faced personally in his public role as a scientist and government advisor leading the USA’s Covid response during the height of the pandemic.
In the light of the 2024 presidential election Justin and Belle talk to Francis about whether we can re-enchant truth, trust and wisdom in an increasingly polarised world.

What could make you believe is being quickened. Aside from that, you can't possibly will yourself into believing. So don't worry about it. If God wants you to believe you will, if not.... (Romans 9:16, AVRLE) “‭16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that, but of God that sheweth mercy.” (John 1:13, AVRLE) “‭13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”.

2600 variants!!! Lol. If there is any clear sign that these Athiests, simply regurgite talking points and dont even flesh out 10 substantial variants. pff, I dont know what else to tell you. And this is what is the problem with Athiests, they speak faster and with confidence, than actually study the documents we have, or dont even allow for different perspectives. They would throw out every court case because of various witness accounts. Your honor, there was a bank robbery, and the cops came, like 12 cop cars. Second Witness, your honor there was 7 cop cars that surrounded the Chase bank. Athiests - THROW OUT THE CASE, you lying christians. Geez dudes.

Good diagnosis of the world, but missing a crucial point: What the Western world calls "faith" is already mostly left-brained. Why has this left-brain overdrive happened in Christian societies and not much in others? Because this soulless rationalism was born out of a cerebral religion. Jesus criticized this letter-by-letter religious mentality of the Jews and called people to love instead, because love is the highest law if you really understand it. But as soon as the Christians came to power, they also began to oppress. Christianity continued to destroy mystery schools, just as the Hebrews had done for centuries. The war against the goddess cults continued, and with the suppression of the divine feminine, all that was left was a boring old widower, a father god without a mother, rituals without power, order that oppress life instead of serving it.

Why this obsession with one of the thousands of gods that have been invented over the centuries? There's no more evidence for the Christian one than there is for Thor or Ra or any of the others.

I am one of your subscribers and a practising Anglican, so was curious to hear what you say on this subject. Unfortunately, you appear to be well behind the curve on this serious and fast-developing topic. You seem not to have heard that during 2024 the US Senate succeeded in releasing hitherto suppressed information about ET visitation. Secondly, that the implications for Christianity are so profound that over 50 religious organisations based in Washington and chaired by the Jesuits have been briefed so thay can begin to consider its implications. This is a major, major development - bigger than anything that Tailhard de Chardin (my current book) ever dropped into our laps. For various reasons, including a personal sighting, I have followed this topic for years and would be more than happy to share what I have learned. At the same time,, some of the facts are so shocking I consider it unethical to give out the information unless its requested. if you would care to provide an email address, I will treat it as a request, and will give you the links that you need. Kind Regards, Michael

Where was Wright and your magazine podcasts when Biden was elected? Where are you all now while non-combatant Palestinian Christians and Muslims are slaughtered in the closed battle space of Gaza, and left to die of physical and psychlogical trauma, hunger and disease while Israeli govt prosecutes its campaign of ethnic cleansing with extreme predjudice? Wright speaks boldly against the heresies and blasphemy of dispensationalism and egregious errors of evangelical zionism, but where is the action and forceful rebuke from the Church of England and your broadcast? Or concerning your powers of observation upon your own govt's sins, including the catastrophuc division of Palestine upon defeat of the Ottoman Empire? If you would frame the establishment of secular governments as the domain of God, shouldn't our prayers be for them, and rather that God's will be done in the fight against Evil? As an American Christian, let me counsel that the Church of England has no voice in our Republic, We The People have spoken for the return of political sanity, our Bill of Rights and Constitutional Rule of Law, based all upon the Christian foundations of Western Civilization. I suggest that England, the EU, and Australia and New Zealand join us, rather than hate Trump, America and Americans. If you would rather not, then mind your global socialist elitism business and stay out of ours. Stick with rigorous theology and knock it off with trying to influence elections. We have had enough of that.

My daughters are atheists now too. I hope that I’ve brought them up to be tolerant of people with other beliefs but will to challenge and question the belief whilst respecting the person.

I hope Alex knows that Christians have different views to William Laine Craig. I find his take on the OT appalling. The 'open' view of God is far more convincing. Most Christians believe we should read the OT through the lense of the cross. Greg Boyd has written about this. Hope Alex gets the chance to talk to him.

America’s separation doctrine does not mean that the Judeo-Christian God, the 10 Commandments, etc., aren’t meant to be part of our American doctrine. It means that Government is not to favor one organizational church over another or one Christian theology over another. America is foundation ally Christian Protestant. . God is firmly foundational in America. It is very much part of America from the foundation. We pray in Congress, Godly blessings are part of inaugurations, etc. Our history does not go back before Jesus as it does in England. NT Wright is very wrong here about our foundational American government and the reasons why immigrants first created communities. He is making up history. I love NT Wright, but I do have some disagreements with his legalistic pacifist theology and now this revisionist history of America’s foundations.

Dr Wright keeps misusing the so called separation of church and state disregarding it's origin historically, this was a letter written in response to denominational concern over institutionalising of one denomination over another, history tells us that the declaration of independence was formulated using sermons preached in the 50years and published 20years before and every article the constitution was based on each the plus minus 28 points in the declaration of independence.

I liked this podcast. I think Iain knows what he knows in terms of what he believes, but is wise enough to protect himself of being attacked by left-brain militants or used by others to further their dogma-wars, usually in defense from vicious attacks. In either way, he would not be able to give any effective contribution as he does now, by limiting prejudice to important insights. The hosts of this podcast are also sweet, honest, and sincere. To me, who can be anonymous and choose my surrounds, I follow the words and ways of Jesus Christ, who has saved me physically and emotionally, so many times and in so many ways.

As a fan of Milton and also a non-believer who spends a lot of time arguing with the Christian right, it's refreshing to hear the views of three intelligent, progressive Christians talking together. It's really good to be reminded that most Christians are like this rather than the much louder and less humane Fundamentalists who seem to spend their time hating everything that's different and constantly aggressively proselytising: often using fear as a battering ram. This is Christianity as community. Who could be against this?

Let me tell you what Donald Trump gets right. He believes in saying, “Merry Christmas”, he believes in prayer in school, he believes Americans are worth protecting, and he believes there are only two genders and a fetus is a child. I really like Wright but politically he is as wonky as Tim Keller, John Piper and all those other gospel coalition guys. Trump gets a lot right ( no pun intended).
