Very honest review from an obviously experienced touring cyclist. Top work. Well done. I actually bought a Riverside 900 as a result of this video.
Dag Karel heeft u de redshift 6° of die van 30 ° geïnstalleerd? Lengte is 80mm veronderstel ik? Mvg Paul

Very interesting! I do prefer the Rohloff and belts almost must have option.. How about the rims on this model, are they also reinforced with thicker parts of aluminum like many other brands? I can see this is a nice bike and great features like the stock Brooks seat for example and racks.. I am wondering what the tiny differences would be and why the better bikes are more expensive, maybe consider hydraulic disc brakes instead of mechanical and things like warranty and proven brands have the test of time in their favor, I hear some people encountered many rusted small parts on this bike, broken rims and ect - I do agree that most of them are too expensive for what you get and Decathlon definitely sets some example here, affordable for everyone, but not the best!
The price of the bike is very attractive because it is almost sold only online. It is very difficult to test the bike or to find it on display. I bought mine without having seen in real and I am very glad. The rims are double wall and pinned (not welded) but this makes no difference for "heavy" rims. The disk brakes with cables are the best solution for a touring bike. A key figure of this bike is the luggage rack very stable.
@@christianwuethrich2222 Nice bike and good to know about the rims but they are no Andra30 rims ect.. It is just no premium high end bike where it is all about belt drives systems and premium parts, you basically want to have these days.. Anyway how long do you have it already?! I heard and seen over time this bike parts especially some nuts and bolts and frame parts become rusty and the paint scratches quick also on the luggage racks, all this things show these bikes are not build to last, but build to maintain - is the key difference between premium and bargain bikes..
@@SkywalkFPV Premium for bicycle mean light not durable. Andra 30 rims are neither premium nor extensive, they are simply durable because they weight more than 600 g and are rated for 120 kg. It is possible to build a strong and reliable bicycle without premium components if the weight is not a key issue.
@@christianwuethrich2222 I think you did not get the point.. Premium for touring is not all about lightweight like many other bicycles.. I am also not only talking about rims, so premium for me means the best overall to pick components, meaning the more expensive and durable choices with low maintenance, sometimes they are lightweight while still being strongest, but mostly stronger means less lightweight is what you want for touring.. Weight remains a balancing game, meaning to have the right components in the right place.. So that being said, long range touring bicycles need to perform under load where the back racks/rims need to carry 30/40kg and that is not even heavy load, but combine that with average body weight of between 80 or more kg on the seat, there is your 120 kg that a rim needs to be able to 'at least' hold over different kinds of roads! Just saying these stock rims double walled or not are no Andra 30, where most 'premium' brands come stock with for a reason obviously.. If this cheap bike would be the best, there would be no expensive bikes, go figure!
Cool footage. I haven't flown mine at night yet but after seeing this I think I will give it a go.
That looks such a nice bike, maybe it’s time for me to ‘upgrade’ my old one,,,,,,,,
Hi there, I am wondering about the gear ratio on this bike? Is it suitable for a mountainous terrain?
i never had any problem to climb mountains
@@karelnoe2419 Cheers, thanks
@ have a look on decathlon website all details are there
Good review. I'm considering one and mean to visit Decathlon but not sure if they allow a test ride. it's quite a heavy bike which worried me a bit.
Don't be afraid of some extra weight. My previous bike was 4 kg lighter but at the end it was slower because the energy was lost in the flexing of the frame. With this bike I climb better, I get a speed of 30 km/h loaded with 22 kg luggage and it goes up to 37 km/h unloaded. Weight is only a number but it is not translated in poor performance automatically.
Thanks, a lot for your review. I have already a bike from Decathlon (Cross Bike), and I am very happy with it. But since I am planning now to do long distance biking (all season, elevation and more remote days) its not sufficient anymore for this. I like your added shocks, that would be also good solution for my current bike. One other point you mentioned was about this flexing handle bar. Unfortunately, it was acoustically not clear. What was the brand name of this (new?) handle bar? I would also like to have look at this option. Thanks in advance for clarification.

Thank you for update. I noticed that the L and XL models no longer are shipped with Shimano crank but a Miranda instead. Looks like great bike
@@svenhofstede I dislike it too
Thats a long steerer tube - did you extend it? I like to have my handlebars high for more upright riding...
@@jlee4873 yes I extended it I’m 187 cm tall I like upright position
@@karelnoe2419 Of course you had to jack it up. Bike is 2 inches too small. STUPID. No Rohloff14 either. Pfffft. The seat stays lower on the seat tube is a lame fad as well. If you can't reach the bar, then use full 80d swept bars that also have 60 mm rise. This is what I have used most of my life, never had discomfort. At least you got the best TRP calipers.
@@GordoGambler In my case the bike wasnt too small but I prefer an upright position.

Hey Karel, Could you make a new video with an update of your thoughts after now nearly 12 months and a summer of use? Would be appreciated
I already planned it waiting for nice weather
@@karelnoe2419 Thank you. Looking forward to it
I curious how the frame will behave whilst going downhill fullspeed (normal roads) when fully loaded with panniers in the front (lowrider) and the back. I read about the occurence of shaking which could cause frame breakage on the long run. This would mean that the frame would not be stiff enough for the job.
my max speed was 54km/h havent experienced any issues
Great post, I am thinking of getting one. Thanks for sharing.
Buon giorno come hai fatto ad alzare il manubrio. Grazie
Hi Karel, very informative vid, can you tell me how the dynamo lights work, I have just bought one but can't find any guide
Just switch on/off on the back of the headlight
Where do you ride. Which city?
Everywhere Belgium, Holland, Germany France
Very helpful review thank you ! Can you give me a reference or product code for the replacement saddle stem please?
Very good thank you for the information 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Hi there, keeping the mudguards on, do you know which are the biggest tires that can fit on this bike? I want to get some bigger but not sure if they fit. Thanks
2.1 according to Decathlon customer service.
i have almotion 50-622 i think 55 will be close to the mudguards
maybe will be tight fit lol
are you doing long trips on it anywhere?
yes Germany, Holland and France
now its 1500
Hello, Karel. Thank you for the video. Would you mind sharing your height? Is this bike true to sizing chart?
im 187 cm
Is this XL? You put wider tires?
xl 50-622
yes
What is the brand and type shock absorber you use?
Van moof s3
Do you know if the reflective strip can be removed from those tires?
Thank you for sharing you experience. Price 1400 is very reasonable but there are plenty of competitors like trek520, fuji touring, kona sutra. Entry level riverside tuoring520 for 900 euro is based on the same frame looks more promising and saves 500 eur in pocket. frameset costs for 400 eur for own build. What is you opinion about stock tires? What thickness is available to mount?
I have noticed a lot of products have massively increased in price in decathlon in the UK, where I would go in and by products I now just buy from elsewhere online. And like you say that price is a huge difference what has gone from somewhere with good quality products cheaper than the competition is now more expensive than the competition!?!?
Thanks for the info. About the bike. I’m thinking of buying one to tour Spain and Portugal. What is your assessment of the riverside 900 and can I use it for both road and trail? Thanks.
I*m still satisfied after 5000+ km on the bike no issues at all.
@@karelnoe2419 Thanks a lot.
What rear sprocket do you advise? And should i replace it right away?
Perfect. Is it possible to convert hydraulic brakes into mechanical ones?
Hi Karel, What are the exact models for the shock absorber in the stem and seatpost? Thank you.
Hi karel, what model for the shock absorber in the stem and seatpost? Damien. Thank you.
redshift in the stem
This is bike is pretty stirdy and stiff without weight. Once the bike was fully loaded it was much smoother and felt at home
Hey Karel, Do you use the bike for commuting? How much distance do you ride everyday? Thanks!
I use it for both commuting and trekking 20-30 km per day on average
@@karelnoe2419 Just like I do. Thanks for the reply and your review of the bike. Happy riding!
Hi Karen my bike is 3 month old now and I agree with everything you say about this bike and Decathlon
One of the best review for this bike
your rear lights are also not visible thats also not allowed in my country the netherlands
Great review. Do you think how much more km this bike can do?
To all of you, I'd like to thank you for the positive input. Today I sold my S3, because i dont need it for home to work any more. Back to pushbikes
Hi Karel. Have vanmoof fixed the speed sensor issue with the S5?
hi i dont have the S5
Hi, i have a Fiat 500E too and looking at this rack. Does this one have any impact on the plastic rear spoiler? does it add too much pressure to it?
No it doesn’t
Really interesting video, also entertaining, nice jokes haha!

In this way, your license plate is insufficiently visible and you are not allowed to use it on the road. At least in my country (NL)
i attach a numberplate with zip ties. I think i dont have to explain each and every logic detail, and it works i already got a speed fine 54 kph instead of 50 kph
you even can see it in the video .
In my country you’re not allowed to speed 😂. Love the videos!
How many kilometres now on your VanMoof now?
nearly 14000 km not riding that much anymore. Im working from home, and during the weekends im out with my 500e to places i can ride my push bike enjoying nature
Hi, did the large box for shopping withstand the test of time? It looked a little wobbly. Looks like a fantastic idea. I think I will do the same with my Vanmoof S3. Thanks.
It’s a Givi wel built, good qlry.
I've ordered the grey/blue S3 as well, coming this week! Does it easily scratch, or is it pretty scratch resistant? Thank you for your honest reviews.
very scratch resistant
Hey man any updates? Are you still satisfied with the bike? I’m not sure if I should wait for the s5 to be available or just make a subscription for this one.
iim still riding my S3 daily 13000 km by now and still satisfied. By the end of this year ill consider the S5, i wait a little till its on the market, and to be sure there arent too many flaws coz the bike looks like 80% reengineered

Fully agree Karel with your findings. I made a test drive yesterday on VM S3 and experienced the same issue; You also always have to drive at max speed at assist mode 3 or 4. You can not pedal below the max speed, unless you stop complete pedaling. My wife has a middlemotor e-bike with torque sensor and this bike gives you assist depending on the assist level setting and the pressure on the pedal. You can also drive slowly in max assist mode, as long as you pedal slowly. As soon as you accelerate with your pedals the assist picks up. This works really good and natural and I think this is the only natural way for driving an e-bike. That's why I am now drawn towards the new Veloretti Ace with middle motor and torque sensor! no VanMoof!
Are you aware of the new VanMoof S5? it comes with a force sensor on the pedals so now you can also drive slowly in max assist mode
