That's happened to me twice before with random rain down pours when the weather forecasts said clear. Lucky that I cought them, had to do a mad dash to get the rig in fast. Glad your gear is ok mate. I bet that made you sick to the stomach. Cracking image of the Andromeda, Super crisp!
@@CosmuzzAstro Hey Ben! Thanks for watching mate! Yeah, you’re right, that made feel really bad mate! You think it’s the end, but luckily it’s still working! Hope you’re ok mate, happy new year to you and the family! Hope to see you back in the new year Ben! Clear skies👍
I've had one of these for around 12 months. I have an Evostar 102 and a C5 yet always seem to be drawn to the little 70ED. It's just a compelling little package and with a lightweight tripod and alt-az mount, I'm set up and ready to go in less than a minute. It has really sharp optics, a nice focuser and is beautifully put together.
@@mediocrefunkybeat Thanks for watching! That really is a nice little scope, especially for a grab and go kit, like you have it👍 Clear skies
Is there a way to go higher than 1080p? My ASI715 camera has a 4k sensor.
Hi and thanks for watching! I don’t think there is a way to go higher than 1080p, that’s the max you can set currently, however, there is a new software update for the ASIAIR out now, so maybe they’ll change it so you can higher! Worth a look👍 Clear skies
Oh crap mate wishing you well
@@nbw555 Thanks mate, all good now👍
Nice! I looked ahead. Did you look at prefabricated observatories? Building one has benefits - an example to grand kids, you get what you want or need in terms of appearance and function. Is it a wash cost wise? The few domes I saw were around $9500 and up(?). Will have to watch and borrow from your experience, like keeping the lid on in windy conditions. Thanks!
@@stevenwilliams6258 Thanks for watching Steven! The benefits of me building an observatory are, as you say, I get it how I want, I get to have my grandson help me and make happy memories 😀 and it’s cheaper, also a much better quality than the kits you can buy off the shelf. Plus the fact that I’m a builder of 38 years, and I know how to do it👍 Please use any ideas you like from my build, for your own build! Happy to help😀 Clear skies!
Nice way to mount the various parts. I 3D printed dove adapters for the Pegasus and PC to fit on the side of the Ashkar FRA400. Need shorter cables. It looks good too but your build keeps things neat and tucked away. I will have to look at doing this. I have a ZWO AM5 mount.
@@stevenwilliams6258 Thanks Steven, the Askar scopes are really nice, and the cage design really helps to keep things tidy! Thanks for watching 👍 Clear skies!
Great image, better recovery. We haven’t had a clear night since Halloween.
@@woody5109 Thanks woody! No clear skies since Halloween! You must be going crazy mate!! Hopefully you’ll get some soon! Thanks for watching and clear skies👍
Horrible feeling, that, Simon! Glad it all survived. Love the processing on Andromeda - very classy. Some nice dronage used in the video too! 👍
@@nightscapejournals Thanks Paul, yeah definitely not nice coming down to see that! I was quite pleased with m31, I think that Altair Tri RGB filter helped considering it was only just over 6 hrs! And with a wet rig!! All good in the end! Thanks and clear skies!
Arrrrgh, an Astrophotographer's worst nightmare. Glad to see it all dried out ok and continued to work. I guess snow is (marginally) better than a rain shower. It's surprising how resilient the gear actually is to getting wet (which I know from experience). Maybe it's time for a Cloudwatcher for the obsy 😉- it won't help with the rig outside the obsy but might save your inside rig. Beautiful image of M31 also. Clear (and dry) skies.
@@LogansAstro Thanks for watching Logan! You are right, the gear can handle quite a bit of dew, and just as well too! I can remember on one of your videos the walls running wet! We have high humidity here also! Often 95%+ And yeah, snow is not as bad as rain, that’s probably why I was able to dry it out ok! Different story if it was rain! Funny thing is Glenn has just got the same cloud watcher as you, so when he’s set his up, he can help me do mine🤣🤣 It’s definitely on my list! I’ll have to fix an umbrella to the portable rig🤣 Thanks and clear skies!
Thanks for sharing your video Simon and your experience with the weather. Beautiful image of M31 and pleased your gear is OK! Clear skies.
@@robinhoward6447 Thanks so much Robin👍 You’re most welcome! Yeah it turned out ok in the end! Clear skies!
I invested in an allsky camera to help me monitor cloud to avoid being caught in a bad situation! Very happy that your equipment survived:)
@@tostativerdk Thanks for watching, an all sky camera is a good idea! Next on the list👍 Clear skies
Not snow (it's rare here) but rain is one of my nightmares. Good to know everything work again. Here is not totally uncommon unexpected light rain, even in summer. Despite I double check all weather apps in the world first, I'm strongly considering the Cloudwatcher from Lunatico to my obsy as an additional protection layer. Not cheap but it (hopefully) will me peace of mind...
@@aleixandrus Hi and thanks for watching 👍 Yes we can get an unexpected shower now and then here in the UK! My next purchase is a cloud watcher too! Maybe that will fix the problem 🤞 Clear skies!
@SimonsAstro oh, BTW... Better than rice is isopropyl alcohol +90%. The idea is to submerge the bords to displace the remaining water in the nooks of the electronic boards. Distilled water is an alternative, but it takes longer to evaporate. Even a hair dryer (in cold mode!) before that may help. But hopefully, this won't happen again!
@@aleixandrus Thanks for the tips! But as you say, hopefully it won’t happen again!!🤞
Glad to hear your gear made it, seems like you avoided short circuits and fried motherboards. If I plan to leave stuff running overnight, all 3-4 weather apps I use have to agree that there won't be any snow/rain. I don't really care if one says there will be clear while the other says it will be high clouds, but they all have to agree that precipitation is 0. Windy, ClearOutside, Zoom Earth and a local weather service is what I ususally use.
@@Wheeljack678 Thanks for watching, and yeah, good advice! I usually do the same, I have 4 apps, and if any one of them says rain, I won’t leave the gear out! This was totally my fault! I had a lapse of concentration! I heard someone say it’s clear, and for some reason I didn’t check any weather apps!! This is what happens! I’m normally more on it! Lesson learned 🤣 Clear skies!
Good to hear everything dried out Simon and some good drying tips

@@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy Thanks so much for watching and for the kind superthanks donation Pat👍 Yeah, I was lucky to be able to dry out the rig, I did it slowly over a few days (no hair drier) just a bowl of rice, it draws the moisture out and it looks like it’s worked. Astonishing luck on drying it all out. Keep an eye out for mold spots in the scope and camera as it can take a while to develop. Great color in the image!
@@AlanHowellphotovideo Thanks Alan, I’ll watch out for that, thanks! Was pleased with the results considering, and only 6.5 hrs😀CS
Hi Simon looks like you had a very lucky escape with you kit mate great final image
@@Tony-Elliott Thanks Tony, yeah it could have been worse! Glad it’s working 👍
One of the worst fears for any astrophotographer. Glad to see your gear survived Simon and cracking image as well!
@@petesastrophotography Thanks so much Pete! Yeah the kind of thing you have nightmares about! All worked out in the end👍CS
My word that was a bummer !! Glad it's sorted. Had a similar issue with dense fog a while back, whole rig was unbelievably wet,😱, scope ended session pointing at the ground I never knew!! .. Dryed it all but had to dismantle the air spaced objective lens on scope to dry the elements !! The mount although working still has an occasional fit, it also parks in a different home position !!! 😂.. Glad you've tried the RGB altair filter, been toying up wether to get one of these over Xmas, did you like results in post processing ? I have a similar Andromeda image to yours, but have no blue data, perhaps filter might help me in my location ... Atb Tom.
@@astrostufftomtrubridge7915 Thanks Tom, yeah fog is another thing we have to contend with! Hope your rig is ok! I think I got away with it, but only time will tell🤞The Tri RGB seems to have really helped with this image, it’s a nice filter👍 Thanks for watching and Clear skies👍
Weird case of De ja vu just happened 🤣🤣 Lovely image and amazing luck buddy lol.
@@davekemp750 Thanks Dave😀
Was watching that
@@LibertyWing-UK Cheers mate👍
@SimonsAstro oh well I watched it twice
@@LibertyWing-UK Lol thanks👍😀
Hi Simon, this is Frank from Germany. Great video about Northumberland. May I ask a question please - I am planning on a 4-5 weeks campervan trip to the UK in March and April 2025, will bring my astrophoto-equipment with me. What part of England do you recommend to go to for astrophotography and a campervan? Thanks, best regards, Frank
@@franksittinger4639 Hi Frank Hope you have a great time here in the UK next year! There are plenty of nice places in the uk but it depends if you particularly want dark skies! Certainly Northumberland has many dark skies, in fact Kielder observatory is close by, in a designated dark sky area bortle 1/2. Nice scenery can be found in Wales Brecon Beacons area, dark skies up there! Yorkshire Dales, Scotland, especially the Scottish Highlands! The Lake District, the list goes on! Just beware that some places can be wetter than others, like some parts of Scotland and Yorkshire! Don’t forget about the South though! For scenery again, Cornwall, Dartmoor! Etc So many nice places! Here! I’m in Suffolk, East Anglia, bortle 4, if your passing, give me a shout👍 Good luck!
@@SimonsAstro Thanks, Simon, seems to be many great options, yep - definietely looking for dark skies. So will start planning, and will for sure give you a call when I am in Suffolk region. Have a good time, Frank
Hi Simon, sorry to bother you again - is there any nice dark sky locatioin around York area? Thanks, Frank
@ Hi Frank, yes there’s a few places, I’ll send you a link to one👍 www.skyatnightmagazine.com/advice/yorkshire-dales-north-york-moors-dark-sky-reserves
Olá Simon, achei bastante interessante como você editou os vídeos, assim ficou bem mais fácil e o aplicativo é bem pratico. Parabéns.
@@valtertaubate Thanks very much! Glad you found the video interesting! Clear skies👍
Fair play to you Simon for showing the human errors. Been there myself, even had the image train slide out the losmandy clamp. Fortunately caught it before impaling on the deck. Also agree on the pegasus. Had to zip tie the cable to it.
@@johnclarke4098 Thanks for watching John, good job you caught the imaging train when you did!! This is real life mate! Clear skies!
At last someone who shows how it sometimes actually can go in this hobby, but you ended up with some very nice images Simon, great video !
@@siegfriednoet Thanks for watching Siegfried. Yeah I called it ‘real life astrophotography’ It often does go wrong, but just keep going! The results usually turn out ok👍 CS
After all the headaches, the images turned out great. I was especially taken by the Flying Dragon which looked spectacular, especially with all those OIII filaments. I know nights like that very well and agree it is so easy to forget steps when you are used to an obsy setup. Oh the number of times I've scratched my head wondering why things weren't going well only to realise I'd missed an important step. Shame the cat didn't appear earlier - might have noticed the missing weights 🤣. CS
@@LogansAstro Thanks Logan, yeah the Flying Dragon was my favorite, that oiii was interesting, it deserves more time on it, I only managed 12 hrs, not quite 74 that some people I know gets🤣 My weather has been terrible here lately, wish I had a rig in Spain or Texas now!! I must return to it again in the future! The cat probably knows more than me🤣 He’s out there every time I am! Thanks for watching and clear skies 🤣
I have my own observatory in my backyard.... I don't miss doing this.
@@astroshooter1960 Thanks for watching, the obsey is a godsend! Wouldn’t be without it now👍
It is amazing how things can go wrong and when they do it all snowballs! Great video and encouraging, in my case not to give up when things don't go to plan. Thank you Simon.
@@bedfordbeds You’re welcome Paul, glad you liked the video and encourages you to keep going😀 Thanks for watching and clear skies 👍
Haha - It took me a couple of minutes to notice the error too! :) FWIW, here's two constructive criticisms: It's good practice to balance dec before RA - the dec balance can affect the COG of the RA axis. And tie your cables to the mount or scope! From what I could see, most seem to be flapping around in the wind, no wonder that you sometimes lose connections. Lovely images too! :)
@@pompeymonkey3271 Thanks for watching, appreciate the tips on balancing, I do have a couple of longer cables that I would like, just haven’t got round to getting shorter ones yet! Most of the cables are strapped to the rig with cable ties, apart from a long blue one which is coiled up one side and a long black one on the other side! TBF the Pegasus has been playing up for months, and the connections on the box are so loose, that the power cable often disconnects as well as the dew strap connection! I’ll have to live with it I guess! Clear skies!
Lovely photo's, also really nice to hear the accent... from another Suffolk boy
@@ranman5283 Thanks mate! Suffolk through & through😀 Are you a ‘Suffolk boy’ ?😀
Thanks for sharing all of that frustration Simon. Been there, done that! Not that it really matters on a rig that small, but on top of everything else, it looks like you have the mount head installed backwards on the tripod.
@@glenngravlin1017 Thanks Glenn👍 Which rig are you referring to, the Heq5 or the Eq6?
The Heq5. You should have one tripod leg pointing North so that the counterweights situated on the North side of the mount are more stable.
@@glenngravlin1017 Yeah apparently how it is now, is how it was before they introduced the Eq6, then it changed to the way you said, that’s how it was when I bought it second hand from Astrobloke! Not been a problem for me in 18 months👍
We all have them Simon, but you kept your cool better than I would…and sorted it, maybe give EQMOD a miss and try GS Server, it’s much more up to date, with modern interface and constantly being developed…all that said, a superb set of images…👏🏻👍🏻
It sure can all go pear shaped sometimes Simon. Nice one sticking at it, I like the Dark Shark. I generally only run the one rig at a time these days, always too many things happening with two for my brain ! Clear skies.
@@OlliesSpace Hey Ollie😀Thanks for watching mate! Yeah my brain hurts when I run two rigs🤣 It’s my age! But definitely worth sticking with it! The Shark is a nice target! Clear skies 👍
When did you get clear skies I've been waiting for nearly 3 weeks
@@Doomdog308 lol, it’s been pretty bad to be honest! Lucky I guess! Thanks for watching 👍
I got horrific flashbacks watching that! 🤣🤣 SO much stuff to remember and get right in this game! Great images in the end, Simon - it all came together!
@@nightscapejournals Thanks Paul! Hope I didn’t give you nightmares 🤣 With perseverance it usually comes together 😀👍 Clear skies!
Beautiful photo, very good 👍
@@Weks3 Thanks for watching 👍
Holy Moly ... When things go bad, wow, did they ever go bad! I'd be considering trashing it all at that point. BUT you recovered and came up with two fantastic images, Simon. Well, as you said at the beginning, don't do this at night. I learned that lesson many years ago. Unless my rig is preset from the session before, only then would I consider going out at night to uncover it and turn it on, then go inside and hope everything would be working. You made me laugh and almost cry several times. Clear Skies (and preset during the day)
@@HeavenlyBackyardAstronomy Hey Pat, thanks for watching! I’m glad I made you laugh, you can’t be too serious in this game, or you’ll go mad with the frustrations that come with this hobby😀 Yeah I really should have set up during the day, and when things go wrong, usually, everything goes wrong! I actually cut some out where other things went wrong and I didn’t show it! But you just have to shrug it off and keep going! I’m happy with the end results anyway! Thanks Pat and clear skies 👍
Within windows device manager, you can force the serial device to always use the same COM port that way Windows will not randomly pick a new port number and you don’t have to keep changing the settings in the software
