what does it weigh >
From memory, around 750g I think. The motor is way bigger than needed, so potential to save a lot more weight by swapping out motor.
Wow, after 5 years I'm the first comment! I'm honored! Honestly! Beautiful car! Have a fantastic day!
Thank you! Sad to have since sold it. Would be worth a bit now.
Any better version of this yet? Looks pretty good otherwise.
I love it how it is, opens up so many weird little slopes for flying as it needs so little lift and is robust
Next steps would be to swap out motor for lighter
nice - what servos you running on the speedo? Just about to put mine togehter
Hey there, yeah running some micro 5g i think servos in the wings so that I don't have any bulging. In the fuse, just the usual 9g servos. The speedo is lovely plane, a lot of fun. I found very rewarding getting it as light as possible for sloping, otherwise bit prone to tip stall. I run a ~17g battery when mainly gliding, more than enough for a few hours without power
great - thanks for reply. Mines NIB at 15 years old, so regular tail, and comes with servo covers that you glue the servo into then screw into balsa spars. I've got some small servos. Was told to try the spring pulley system (using spring wire to act as pressure in one surface deflection, with kevlar string back to servo for tension - to keep light) - will see how that goes, otherwise I'll just stick to the steel rod, but it's quite a heavy rod. I'll try to keep light. Have a few of the dream flight models, but this is first balsa sloper. Am considering the phenoix 1600 for slope. Have the 2000 for park flying and it's great! You still liking the 1600 by the looks!@@jay.the.mole.7143
@@heartsoul4386 sounds good, hope the setting up goes well. Yeah still love the phoenix 1600 it's such a good allrounder, well worth it.
nice
battery*
Very nice video!!! Was the power supply serving the wing surfaces alone? A lighter batter if the motor was not being used?
Yep I run a 850 mah 2s instead of usual 1500 mah. I've also put the two rear servos up front and run push rods to rear control surfaces, to allow to balance. Save a lot of weight and flies very forgiving
What a nice place for slope soaring. Where is it?
Yeah was pretty nice! Warilla beach in Wollongong, Australia
Great! I think vintage type floaty planes on gentle inland slopes are a magic thing. Using the wings as whole ailerons or flapperons, with a carbon bar (possibly v near CG) about 1/3 back along the wing chord as the rotational axis. Small servos (independent channels) mounted either side of the cabin with short push rods raise & lower the L.E. I have seen the Kiel Kraft gliders done in this way, and gentle slopes give scope for scratch builds on a light construction scale. If something performs well, then you can beef it up and take your own design to a more adventurous, steeper slope.. Nice one! ⭐👍
Nice flying. Preformed better that I expected based on the into.
Thanks :)
Great Video, helpful the Algorithm picked this for me! Planning to do a super light RC conversion, we‘ll see if i will be able to slope soar on very light winds 🤩
Thanks mate, well done with the diagrams and explanations. Glad the algorithm brought this channel to my attention, I have subscribed!
I'm new to the game so I'm on a slope finding mission 😊
Is it printed with regular PLA or LW-PLA? Thank you very much.
It's LW PLA I believe
How did you get it to balance with such a small battery?
No trouble, could even put the battery further forward. The electric motor is quite heavy, older type
There's actually opportunity to swap out the motor for much lighter one, and save a lot of weight, been keen to try. Be able to save 100 g ish I reckon
Kool AF
Please tell me what are the parameters of the carbon wing clutch? I inherited this plane and didn't get a wing coupler for it and can't find the length, diameter, and bore anywhere to replace it with a proper one with similar strength. Thank you very much.
The wing connector tube is 700 mm long by 10 mm diameter. Mines somewhat flexible, could benefit from a stiffer tube
@@jay.the.mole.7143 Hello, thank you very much for the lightning fast response to my question. I tried to insert 10mm of carbon into the wing and it doesn't want to be too loose and I don't want to push it in there by force. Can't the diameter be a little smaller? Can I ask you to measure with a caliper? I found a replacement part somewhere on the web, but I'm not sure if it's the one for my Radian. This one has the parameters: Wing Tube for the Radian/Pro. Specs: Length: 27-1/2 in (700mm); Outer Diameter: 0.375in (9.5mm); Inner Diameter: 0.265in (6.7mm).
@@krotitelduchu you're right it is actually just under 10 mm, around 9.6 - 9.7 mm with calipers
@@jay.the.mole.7143 Thank you very much. You helped me a lot.
is that owl city? haven't listened to them for a while
It is :) used to listen heaps, still love
Yep! Mainly Wollongong and Shellharbour area. Had a look at your vids, some nice flying spots there
Nice flying , I think I've figured out you're in NSW? Been enjoying some local slopes near Melbourne lately, on my TH-cam page.
Hi there can you add the wind speed that you fly each slope eg 10kmh 30 degrees volantex 16s, 5 kmh 10 degrees radian.....
Typical 30+ degree slope, minimum wind for Phoenix 1600s ~7 kts (~12 kmh), ~4 kts (~7 kmh) for Radian (but I run my Rad very light) On the gentle slopes only use Radian and probs need a bit more, maybe 5-6 kts
Wish I could find one. That was best glider they made
Just got one as my first rc glider....been paragliding for 30 years and seen your videos with this glider and it does look fun:)
Nice! It's such a fun plane, simple and really floaty. Great choice for first rc glider
Great info. Thanks for the video. New sub
That looks relaxing.
Hey mate just discovered your channel and I’m enjoying your videos as I slope soar in Illawarra as well. I’ve noticed you fly in a lot of different locations but you don’t have any videos of the north side of Hill 60 which is surprising because I reckon that’s the best place in the Illawarra. Have you tried the north side?
Hey glad you're enjoying. And very good question, actually been keen to fly there but bit freaked out around landings, with the small landing area. What are you thoughts?
@@jay.the.mole.7143 Hi Jay, also new to your channel, landing is not all that hard at the top of hill 60, we just aim our foamy planes at something soft looking & try not to hit it to hard. If you would like to practice with one om my foamy gliders, just let me know.
The thing is once you fly there you won’t want to fly anywhere else, it’s awesome. Not a good area for big planes, would suggest a 1.2m or smaller foamy for there. Couple of different ways to land. 1. Slowly sweep left and right slowly backing your way in and drop down. (Watch out for tourists) 😂2. Fly around behind the hill and drop down. (Watch out for Mercedes and BMW’s)😂 Don’t know if that’s helpful at all. Hope to see you up there sometime.
@@AndrewWebster-u7f ok sounds worth a go, something to shoot for come spring.
Watching made me smile. 😊
Do you feel this is a good plane for slope soaring? Seemed to work ok and will it fly on 4's when using the power for flight? Thanks!
Hi Mike, yeah the phoenix 1600s is great for sloping, just a really good easy to fly all rounder. Can fly on 3s at a pinch, if not on constant power and if using compatible esc. But 4s might be pushing it. You'd def have to change down prop and run bigger esc
@@jay.the.mole.7143 Thanks buddy I appreciate your reply and input, seems like a good plane to start with. I have flown and driven about everything RC but slope has been a bucket list RC thing for me to do for a very long time. Thank you and have a great night!
Enjoy! Sloping is a lot of fun
@@jay.the.mole.7143 Thanks Jay!
There is an art to flying a Radian if you are use to regular powered airplanes which do wheel takeoffs and landings, fast climb out and aerobatics. With a Radian, everything happens in slow motion. Don't launch at full throttle or the thing will start doing loops...lol. Use 1/4-1/2 and hand launch straight out, not pointed upward. Turns require a lot of rudder especially if there is wind. Great glider once you get use to it.
Great video John!
Would you mind to suggest me about your spy cam which you used, thank you for your kindness.
Nice flight. What do you think of the RunCam?
Weight and size are awesome . So far only half happy with video quality, but am only running at 2K. I need to get a faster micro sd card ro do 4K
Lovely flight with a special friend ;) Love my Phoenix 1600 too, it sure can take some abuse and it's super maneuverable 👍 I added flaps on mine, makes a BIG difference when you have a limited space to land, it hovers like an helicopter :D
Flaps would be so useful, I should do this as well. Landing can be a bit tricky atm.
@@jay.the.mole.7143 I have some videos testing these flaps out, you can see especially on part 3 how to do it :) Here is part 2 with some real life testing: th-cam.com/video/OtJLEirOTWU/w-d-xo.html Now I have them set with first position just about 5mm down for thermal hunting (it works beautifully!) with 5% elevator compensation, and then the second at full 45 to 50º down with around 16% down elevator mix, it's my final settings ;)
Awesome ship - can I ask what is your AUW on the glider - I am just finishing a 1.5m F5K build and have tipped over 300g
It came out at 350 g and actually ended up a 1.6m Bit heavier than my brother wanted
Beautiful rebuild! Love the colors but it disappears when you get low to the hillside! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks bro!
Great examples. Love the drawing on the photos to show lift angle and the rotors on sharp edged cliffs. This video will be very helpful for new slope pilots to get a visual understanding!! Thanks!!
👍🏼👍🏼Thanks for the lesson.
You need to take up hanggliding
You don't mention anything about thermals coming off the rocks Water vapour lift and turbulence that can come of the waves/swell
Maybe there room for a sequel 🙂
Awsome Stuff! That thing looks so stable. Super chilled to watch. Nice edit!
Thanks bro!
😅👍
Nicely done, thanks for sharing!
When I was last at that spot with the family I thought it looked good for sloping.
It's cool, love the open space, but not high lift type slope, not steep enough
pls. more videos of that little glider. It lookas very nice
Plans for more coming :)
@@jay.the.mole.7143 where was this flight? Beautiful overlook
@@dalekslayer777 this was Hill 60, in Wollongong Great spot, can even park and fly from car front seat
@@jay.the.mole.7143 Looks amazing! maybe I'll get there some day (from USA here)
The video quality is decent 👍
Still waiting on faster sd card so that I can run at 4K
Looks fantastic... 😁 where's the location ?
Shell Cove, Australia It's small slope but good fun 😀
The Speedo flight characteristics are impressive for such a small and presumably light model!
The best glider for me!👍❤😊
Nice flight that bird was crazy!
Great flying. And thank you very much for flying with the birds the birds not trying to attack them👍👍
Flies nice! I lost my original Parkzone Radian in a tree and that version is impossible to find now. I have a Night Radian that I gutted the LED's and controller out of. Installed an ELRS receiver right at the very front and fly it on either 850 or 1000 3s batteries also right up against the front bulkhead. The 1000 3s is a nice compromise. Much lighter than the recommended 2200 but still gives a few great climb-outs.
Yeah I heard that the original radian was the best / lightest, pretty happy to find one.
you had to try to recover the glider stuck in the tree with a fishing rod... This glider is the best for me, I like to see it fly! I will build one in depron this will be my challenge
