I’m working on a photo project for my Gallery in Cowes on the Isle of Wight that involves travelling to all the Sea Areas in The Shipping Forecast as heard on Radio 4, and doing as many as possible by on my little sailboat. The hope is to produce a beautiful book of black and white photographs that celebrate the seas and weather that surround us.

Sailing a classic Contessa 26 around The Forecast Areas and taking photos for a book as I go..
I have visited your shop i like ur Irish Sea one of the light house
Fantastic 🙏
👍to you too mate.
You need to to pull your halyard away from the mast to stop the rattling. Otherwise good show
I love all the Folkboat derivatives, especially the Cutlass 27 and the Contessa 26. I used to own a stretched version, called the Elizabethan 29 that sailed like a dream but was a tad tender for my tastes, nevertheless, it managed many fast trips to Cherbourg and St Nazaire from Cowes.
Fantastic, one of my all-time favourite sailboats. Have hit the sub button.

I’m at the gallery in The Isle Of Wight now… WOW - this art is uniquely beautiful ❤. Great to meet you Neil.
This is absolute quality content Neil, how long have you been sailing?
Thanks Samuel. I sailed a fair bit as a young man but owning a yacht and skippering was brand new to me. I did my day skipper a few years ago... But owning your own boat is the steep learning curve I hope I share in the videos... Thanks for watching..
Amazing ....well done ....watched them all in one sitting...insparational
Thank you. Nice to hear. Put a smile on my face. :-)
That looked pretty uncomfortable! I only go out in nice conditions as i eish to enjoy, not endure!
That’s why yachts are so much cooler than motorboats. They’d never come that close to anything noisy 👍🏼
👍
There is not so much to steering as I thought.
I did enjoy the video. That's my sailing plyaground Felixstowe. Thanks for sharing.
Great video. You’ve given me hope. I’m looking to get back onto the water again soon myself. I am interested in the self steering gear. What make have you gone for? I’ve not had much luck with them in the past. Probably due to the fact I’ve had hand-me-downs that have no instructions.
Thanks. Much better people than me to advise you on self steering. Lots of opinions out there. Good luck. 😊
I did the Mull in a 21’ , going round the inside passage is so fun, doing 9knts over the ground, max hull speed 5knts max! Mind, sure got a bit bumpy round the corner
I like your style! Congratulations on the trip and very well done with the short videos. You have (i imagine) captured the essence of the adventure brilliantly. Sorry about your dad at the end... I hope we could see a little more about your boat and the necessary prep?!
Thanks. Appreciate the kind words. Dad hadn’t been himself for years so think it was his time to go. I sold the boat so… just won’t have time for another nautical adventure this year.. maybe a Contessa 32 in a year or so. But I did love No Doubt.. didn’t like her sitting up the river unused so..
CONGRATULATIONS...this is GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT. Many are proud of you.
Thanks. 🙏🏻
Well done young Sir...Thoroughly enjoyed being on the journey with you..I'm 74 and plan to do the same. Never sailed a Yacht before only trawler experience.. Must be as daft as you...Congratulations.
You’ll love it. 😁 leaving is the hardest part.
Just an idea , but if you run the shot cord through a fairlead six inches above your cleat. you could use a wedge to increase or decrease the tension. Our old family boat steers herself most of the time certainly long enough to grill a couple of mackerel for lunch make a cuppa check the charts sun yourself on the foredeck with a beer.use the facilities etc etc.not quite as fast as the Contessa but no slouch..
Great video, I'm local to Felixstowe and new to sailing. Enjoyed it.
0:10 G' day from Australia. Ther is an chap called kevien Green, he is sailing the east coast of queensland Australia in an contessa 26. I am refitting my Columbia 27 and its a fairly big refit going on, but i bought the boat cheap. I have a few things to deal with soon it wont be till next year when the boat launches. Gerard on board, SV GEMSTAR.
As some starting out on their sailing adventure this is really inspiring. Congratulations!
Thanks Professor. 😁
Wonderful boat!!! Wish to found a contessa 26 soon !
Will you come across the Altlantic in the Contessa 26? Enjoyed the series. Cheers
I’ve sold her.. life, kids, art… but I definitely would be happy sailing her across the Atlantic.. maybe a contessa 32 when I can get another adventure at sea planned..
In the 'third world' we have very finely ground coffee, you just mix it in the cup with boiling water, it settles to the bottom, takes about 2 minutes at most, you dont drink the last mouthful. You can buy arabic and turkish coffees ground in this way in your part of the world, or get the beans you like ground super fine in the shop, and keep it around, its actually much easier, no hassles. Nice video...
Hi Neil, will follow more of your videos. My last boat was a Contessa 26 (Shamaal) Beautiful boats. Thanks for bringing back memories. Pete C
Make cowboy coffee, strain trough cloth...
Bravo
Do a Google for "Sheet to Tiller". This will get you a faux autopilot until you get a more permanent one installed.
Thank you Neil for a really lovely video raconte of your trip around Britain. How much experience in coastal sailing did you have prior to setting off? I have my RYA Day Skipper and enjoyed many decades of dinghy sailing. I too love the Contessa 26, ideal for your solo sail.
Hi. I feel like until you get your own boat experience doesn’t count for much.. but like learning to drive from the passenger seat. I loved the 26. Technology now means you always know exactly where you are… so much much easier than 25 years ago. Go for it. Day skipper and a bit of sense all you need.
Great video, Contessa seems to handle that so well. As a Centaur owner I have serious upwind envy watching this.
Great achievement. Well done!
Nice
As a long distance trucker, and novice sailor, i regularly listen to 'malin head, dogger bank, fairisle... cyclonic.....'. To which, I send you respect and sincere wishes in your adventures. X
Hello Neil, thank you. I like your video's so much and your freedom is for me an example🙂
Appreciate it. Thank you. x
That's the calmest sea that I have ever seen with 30 knots of headwind. Or did he say 13 knots?
👏👏👏
Great video! So glad you made it home safe and sound. It's a dream of mine to buy a sailboat and travel the world someday - thank you for the inspiration and motivation to follow through!!
Thank you. I appreciate that. Honestly the hardest part is just committing to do it and starting out....Good luck. :-)
Glad i found this. I got a ranger 265 about 3 years ago now. Pottering about on a lake but have done the Clyde on a 46ft baveria. You really can write a book when you own a boat
Thank you Andy. :-)
Wondered of you have looked at 'sheet to tiller' self steering? I used it on my old boat, a Mirage 28, and it worked well. My current boat, a Gib'Sea 96, has a wheel, but I often wonder if I should rig up the emergency tiller with sheet to tiller some day.
Hi. Maybe sheet to tiller steering is more appropriate for long trade wind passages? But honestly I don't really know what I'm talking about! Thanks for watching.
Neil, Beautiful British coastline!!! TY
Cheers Chris. The world is beautiful out there... Thanks for watching. :-)
Great job Sailor!!! ⛵️
Thank you. :-)
Just found your channel. That brought back memories of my solo trip, Lowestoft to Scarborough. The windfarms make navigation really, really easy.
They do. Often in the way though.....Thanks for watching. :-)
Hey Neil, I'm going back and checking out some of your previous videos ... great stuff. Those Basking Sharks are huge and they eat plankton ... kind of like a whale ... or some whales, I suppose. Anyway, enjoy your videos and hope that you chronical another adventure sometime soon ... thanks for posting.
Thank you master blaster! Always dreaming of new adventures....
Exciting voyage, the brave sailor 🐬
Thank you for watching. The only brave bit is casting off in the morning...after that it's all pretty easy. :-)
Take your main halyard off the sail and shackle it to the end of the boom then it wont clang all night
It's electric cables running inside the mast that are slapping.....
the wallet? oh no!
So glad I found these videos. You are a LEGEND, Neil! What a great trip!
Thank you Joe. Love to be called a legend, though I'm really anything but .... appreciate you watching
