Ah, I was delighted to find this - it has made me so happy. What a fabulous composition, full of your personality and invention. The central variations are beautiful. Fingers crossed (perhaps literally!) this gets the attention of other pianists. It would be a great encore. I think I’d especially like to hear Hamelin play it.
Hi David, this is so beautiful! From your student Kelvin of Homerton College, Cambridge (whom you taught 20+ years ago) 🙂
Hi Kelvin, how wonderful to hear from you after quite a while. Thank you for the kind message, and for being in touch. I hope you are well, wherever you are living these days.
Having just listened to the original piece, at first I didn't think it 'worked' on the piano, but so skilful is your arrangement (more than a 'transcription', surely) and so expressive your playing, David, that I was soon drawn in and, given the dearth of good solo piano music by Tchaikovsky, this fully deserves a place in the concert repertoire alongside, say, Brahms's Handel Variations and Rachmaninoff's Chopin Variations. A tour de force. Bravo!
Thank you Joseph. The orchestral suite is a masterpiece (which I gather was at one point intended to be a symphony) against which the piano sound cannot really compete. So this transcription is best taken as a stand alone 'piano' work. I am so thrilled you feel it deserves a place in the concert repertoire. Let's hope this film is seen by some of today's younger whizz-kid pianists!
Amazing piece. Actually amazing. ❤
Thank you so much.
bellissima trascrizione... controllo british
Much appreciated, thank you.
Keep working hard king 👑
Will do dawg.
Ah this is in my College!
very nice, it makes me craving a carbon sandwich
Love the use of l'homme armé as the basis for the last movement!! It makes me wonder-- does this piece have a programme?
Thanks - I appreciate your question. The answer is no, but the theme (and what follows) makes for a resolution of sorts after two movements which depict elements of seeking an answer, and Hamlet-like self questioning.
Briljant.
A very underwatched video! Incredible!
Beautiful David, lovely phrasing!
Magnificent !
Beautiful, David. The preservation of a very precious moment in time.
Many thanks David. Very beautifully played. Thanks so much for sharing with us. X
Thank you Yi.
I'll be honest here; I've been regularly scouring the web for performances by Federico Gad Crema since I first heard him (via TH-cam) at the Chopin Competition. How I never heard this before today is beyond me! What a beautiful piece, Mr. Earl, and a wonderful marriage of composition and pianist: your exquisite and poignant piece, complemented by Gad Crema's rich-tone and honest, sensitive interpretation, is inspiring and Heavenly indeed. What a pleasure to hear this!
Lovely pieces, most beautifully played - thank you, David!
Thank you Sibyl. They have settled in since you heard them last May.
Hello David, These scenes are beautifully evocative with such a wide range of emotion and of course superbly performed. Thank you for this wonderful music.
Thanks so much John.
Superb David. It transported me to a place full of light and beauty, lyrical and reflective, pushing out into the spiritual darkness and illuminating the way with sure-footed creativity. It's the kind of music to instill inward peace. I loved it.
Many thanks Richard. What an insightful and moving choice of words - much appreciated.
👏👏👏
Thanks Carl - I hope your piano playing is going well!
@@davidtnearl It is! Just finished first first movement of the pathetique and now working on two pieces for an upcoming concert with the theme "dances".
@@carltybjergkeith7784 so glad to hear it! All the best for the concert. I am preparing the Goldberg Variations for next May.🏄♂️🏄♂️🏄♂️
What an amazing composition!
Very beautiful playing
What a orchestration, David! The harmony is interesting and so impressive!
Thank you for taking the time to comment - much appreciated!

Hi
Hi
Beautiful sound and playing. Interesting feel. Top quality on all counts.
Who else is here for P'tang Yang kipperbang music ?
Yes! Thought I was the only one, it’s bugging me I can’t find the song
Some impressive sight-reading; and lovely music, of course. Well done, all!
These are lovely!
Thanks Deon. I am thinking that the whole set of 15 would make a good ballet piece.
@@davidtnearl Hi David, Just a quick question, do you still have the piece you did for the film P’tang Yang Kipperbang in 1982?
@@renlin8925 Many thanks for your interest. The P'Tang Yang title music can be heard on my web site's Audio page davidearlmusic.net/
my fav recording out of all
A fabulous and cheerful variation of the ,vlooienmars, as we say in Dutch bringing back a lot of memories. Just amazing!
Schumann indeed does come to mind when listening to this pieces (and Rachmaninoff of course). Maybe Earl is consciously referring to Kinderszenen? Although I'd say this sounds to me more along the lines of Novelettes.... Whichever way, this is a very interesting and evocative album.
I wonder when a CD boxset of Earl's piano music is coming out... There's incredibly powerful piano writing and playing here, as in the Chopsticks Var, the Mandalas Suite and South African Childhood.
Beautiful and extremely persuasive
Lovely. I don't know what the title refers to (if anything) but this is a tender, meditative piece that begins quietly, lulling you into a reflective mood, then swells into something full-throated, something that has a melody but evades it at the same time, giving it a slightly unsettling quality, and then the piece subsides into something uncertain, a falling away into near silence - leaving me at least feeling I'd been listening to a musical poem. Thank you David. And congratulations to Frederico for performing it with such sensitivity and feeling.
Suggest reading the info above!
David, this was a beautiful performance of your work. Thank you for sharing.
Amazing!
Marvellous! Thank you for sharing this :)
👏👏👍
So enjoyed watching you turn and twist the very fist notes I learnt on a piano into a brilliant composition - well done and awesome my dearest friend!! Much love j
Never thought 'Chopstix' could be a masterpiece!
Wonderful to hear. How you remember, indeed imagine, all those notes.
Ha! This idea reminds me of the story of Beethoven and Diabelli’s theme. The invention is fabulous. Congratulations!
Pity nobody thunk to tune the paino; makes it all extra tiring.
Just discovered this composer and piece. It's made my day. The lento is unforgettable.
Wundervoll...!
Oops! My previous comment was about Darshanas, not this concerto. Hadn't realised the next programme had come up.
An impressively thoughtful, even sombre piece, with lyrical and tender moments. At times it feels its way tentatively into what might be termed mystical passages. It has the drive and melodic fluency which one has come to associate with much of David's music, with a fugitive air of mystery just below its surface. A meditative piece, one to listen to in that mood or to induce it.
I had the privilege of turning pages for David at an early performance of this work ... which meant that I was unable to listen to it properly! Now, having listened to it in this marvellous performance (what a fabulous pianist David is!), I can safely say that it is David's masterpiece for piano. The Third Suite was wonderful, but this goes futher and shows that, at 66 (he won't thank me for mentioning that!), David is far from finished as a composer. In fact, perhaps only now is he really finding his voice and writing truly original, unique, memorable, affecting and lasting music. Bravo, David!
