How to Replace the Cruise Control Switch/Button on a Kia Sportage Years 2011-2016
มุมมอง 61K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This video shows how to replace the cruise control switch (buttons) on a Kia Sportage for years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. I have been informed that some steering wheels only have 2 screws behind them that need to be removed instead of 3. If you have a 2011-2016 Sportage with a steering wheel that requires a different repair process than this can you let me know? I will update every...

    Is this a common problem on this car? I have a 2012 model where cruise control does not work. But I can't say for sure that it's a problem with the buttons. How can I determine this?

    • @slinkos
      @slinkos 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      BTW: If I look at Wikipedia the 3th generation is 2010-2015. So 2016 must be a newer model I think? I'm saying this because you state that it's 2011-2016.

      If your cruise control doesn't work at all (only switch on and off but you can't set it to SET or RESET) then this could also be a failure of the upper clutch switch as it was with my car. The spring in the switch was broken so the switch always stayed in the "pressed" status when I stepped on the clutch. The system detects that together with the lower clutch switch and for safety you can't activate cruise control. I repaired my upper switch and all worked fine again.

    must i really remove the airbag? Can i just remove the 2 screws instead and then use a pry tool to remove it? I saw the video and its not clear if the airbag is connected to the controls. Am asking because i have no torx. Please let me know. Thanks

    • @fixitryanofficial
      @fixitryanofficial ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, unfortunately (on mine at least) the airbag/horn assembly covers the left edge of the cruise control switch such that the airbag/horn needs to be removed to get the old CC switch out, and the new one in!

    • @Kurt-xs3bp
      @Kurt-xs3bp 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need to remove the horn / air bag assembly because the switches wrap behind the horn.

    I have a 2012 RHD UK Sportage with conventional ignition that only has the two holes. The switch screw is a torx as well. Luckily people have already commented on two holes instead of 3 so next stage seems to be to remove steering wheel then work out how to get the rear shroud off to access the second switch screw.

    Hi, great video but is there a chance that you could accidentally set off the airbag in the horn? I am scared of this happening so a bit hesitant to do this. Thanks

    • @fixitryanofficial
      @fixitryanofficial ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to be extra careful you can disconnect the battery first. I found this general tip/instruction you can follow: “The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) uses very large capacitors to store enough energy to deploy the air bags, for a short while after the power is lost, as might be the case in an accident. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait at least two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.”

      Hey, I’m having trouble seeing it anywhere else other than straight from Kia parts websites. Try putting your VIN or car info in there and then searching “cruise control” or “cruise switch”. You could also try going to junk/salvage yards if you have any near you. Good luck! 👍

  • @WarrenEames

    Thank you VERY much for that. I am in Australia & have a 2012 model. The only thing I found that some people might want to know is that my switch has glue or double sided tape on the back & I broke it getting it out (no problem as I was replacing it anyway). Have been without a cruise for about 5 yrs as I didn't want to take all the other gear off that was suggested in another clip. Once again thank you VERY much.

      Yes those were similar to my symptoms! It just started working intermittently only, sometimes I would have more luck if I pushed harder. Makes sense then that my problem was probably the contacts slowly wearing out on the switch.

    Great video but you may be wrong about this method being suitable for a 2013 Sportage. My stock steering wheel only has 2 holes either side. The hole to remove the airbag with an M40 Torx is spot on. The other hole is to remove only one of the two torx screws for the controls. You have to remove the air bag, the steering wheel, the voice and phone controls and the the rear plastic cover, this is the only way you can gain access to the 2nd torx screw to complete the removal of the volume and/or the cruise control. A slightly longer process but one easily completed in the home garage so long as you are comfortable removing an air bag. Not sure why Kia changed the design I suspect it has something to do with safety, or possibly protecting their dealers source of income. Hope this helps.

      Good question! If you want to take the utmost precaution, the following explanation I found should be best: “Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait at least two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.” FYI: “The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) uses very large capacitors to store enough energy to deploy the air bags, for a short while after the power is lost, as might be the case in an accident.”

      @@fixitryanofficial Hey Ryan I have a problem if you could help me out. Today I tried to remove the cruise control switch. Your version at 0:45 has three screws to remove but mine has only two screws (I own a 2012 model Kia Sportage). I unscrewed the two screws on the right side of the steering wheel and tried to remove the switch but I just could not get it to move. Is there maybe a hidden screw somewhere that I need to pay attention to before I could remove the cruise control switch?

    • @fixitryanofficial

      Hey, so sorry! Another commenter helped me realize that the 2011 Kia Sportage steering wheel may be a one-off (no other year is the exact same as the 2011). He has a 2013 which may be more like yours, and he said this is how to do it on his: "My [2013] stock steering wheel only has 2 holes either side. The hole to remove the airbag with an M40 Torx is spot on. The other hole is to remove only one of the two torx screws for the controls. You have to remove the air bag, the steering wheel, the voice and phone controls and the the rear plastic cover, this is the only way you can gain access to the 2nd torx screw to complete the removal of the volume and/or the cruise control."
