Astrophotography images and how to create them
Creating a Photobook of your Astro Images
Hi, I’m Ian and I live in Surrey in the UK.
This is a short video to show how I created a photobook of some of my 2021 Astrophotography images.
I show briefly how I did this and some of the things to watch out for and then I flick through the pages of the final printed version.
The actual version does look better than as it does in this video.

The Pillars of Creation - Spring Project - Part 4 Creating colours
มุมมอง 9232 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi, I’m Ian and I live in Surrey in the UK. This is the fourth in a series of videos I’m doing over spring, shooting the Pillars of Creation within the Eagle Nebula, M16. In the first video I showed my set up and how I used Deep Sky Stacker to stack the images and at the end of the video showed the final stacked image with just 7 sub-frames and in the second video I showed how to stack multiple...
First use of an Electronic Filter Wheel
มุมมอง 7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi, I’m Ian and I live in Surrey in the UK. This video shows me using my new ZWO Electronic Filter Wheel for the first time. I test it out with three filters and no filter. In combination with the Electronic Automatic Focuser it works really well to move to different filters and get the camera in focus for imaging. This will really help doing multiple targets with different filter requirements ...

The Pillars of Creation - Spring Project Part 1
มุมมอง 7392 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi, I’m Ian and I live in Surrey in the UK. In this video I shoot M16 the Eagle Nebula, but concentrate really on the Pillars of Creation within it. I plan to take a series of these images over the coming weeks as the nebula rises earlier and earlier in the night and see how the final image improves with the more data I get on this target. It currently rises above a shed in my back garden at ar...

This is just a short video to show a full image of the Moon that I recently took with my ASIair Pro. I did a video are few weeks ago and some have asked to see the full image of the Moon, so as part of my 60 seconds of calm, here is this one of the Moon
Connecting and using the ZWO EAF on the Esprit 120ED
มุมมอง 21K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi, I’m Ian and I live in Surrey in the UK. In this video I explain how I attached and calibrated the ZWO Electronic Automatic Focuser on to my Sky-Watcher Esprit 120ED telescope and then how I used it to image M33, the Triangulum galaxy. I’d not been sure whether to buy an electronic focuser as I’ve done really well with just a Bahtinov mask until now, but I thought the benefit of re-focusing ...
PixInsight processing of M33 - The Triangulum Galaxy

Hi, I’m Ian and I live in Surrey in the UK. So, galaxy season has started and I’m already chasing some of the best-known targets. In this video I show how I process M33 - the Triangulum galaxy in Pixinsight. Whilst this is a large galaxy it has certain complexities in processing to bring out the colours and some of the Nebula that are in the galaxy. One of the elements I used was a mask techniq...
Imaging the Moon with the ASIair Pro - video mode
มุมมอง 26K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi, I’m Ian and I live in Surrey in the UK. In this video I explain how to use the video mode in the ASIair Pro to capture planets or the Moon for example. In this case I took some images of the Moon. It very easy to do and I think it produced a fairly good image, even though I wasn’t using a dedicated planetary camera. I also show how to stack the images within the ASIair Pro. The final image ...

Hi, I’m Ian and I live in Surrey in the UK. This is a quick video showing some images of the James Webb Space Telescope. I suspect there will be lots of these videos as this is very popular at present amongst the Astrophotography community. Given that this is a very rare opportunity to take an image of a man-made object hundreds of thousands of kilometers from Earth it is not surprising the num...
Esprit 120ED gives great round stars to the edge of the image

ASI Air Pro - Flat Frames - Auto v Manual
Very helpful before my first attempt with the ASIair Pro. Thanks much!
Hi Ian, stunning M63 by the way! I just fitted my EFW and I'm just hoping that its assembled properly, no light leaks, the filters are aligned with the hole, the backfocus is correct, and that I haven't let in too much dust. (all checks can wait for first light). I powered up and the ASIair detects the EFW and lets me name the filter slots after the filters placed in them. The seleted filter is shown in the icon in the cockpit screen. Thanks for showing how Autorun works! So, that greyed out 'filter' option in the autorun setup menu finally becomes available 👍. I'm still scratching my head about manually choosing the filter to use in Preview and Live modes, but I guess that'll become obvious when we get clear sky. Thanks for the video.
Amazing. Did you take this picture with your 72ed setup?
Hi thanks for watching. Yes ED72, but two panes and then stitched together for a mosaic. Clear skies Ian
@@astrotimetraveller4622 Thank you very much Ian! I am researching before I get into the astrophotography. Thinking if I should get the ED72 or something with higher focal length and bigger lens. Like ED80, etc.... Any recommendation is appreciated.
who pays the bill?
Did you use any other spacers on the astro camera? My setup is 72ED - rotator - 0.8 reducer - 55mm spacers - 585MC Pro, but I do not get into focus. I think this is because of the change Skywatcher did to the 72ED in 2019, they shortened the tube a bit I think. Mine is probably older. With the focusser completely retracted I can just see the stars coming into focus. With only the ring that comes with the reducer all works fine, but then the camera is fitted at an angle. ☹️ Would getting a smaller spacer on the camera (so let’s say 45mm between the reducer and the camera) fix this issue?
Thanks for sharing this interesting video, impressive results. I plan to buy the 72 ed but I'm wondering what would be the better camera to sample correctly. As I can see in your video it's fine to use a camera with pixel size of 4 micrometers? I'm interested in the asi 533 mc pro. Thanks very much
Good Job! Thanks Ian, I’ve just emigrated to Canada, from Hampshire, so not a million miles from where you are. I’m waiting on my Esprit 120 and EAF from FLO, this video is what I’ll be referring to once it all arrives. Matt
Great video. I've had the EVO 72 for 4 years but have just now bought the .8 reducer flattener. What is the length of the extension tubes you used to achieve back focus? I have the ZWO 533MC Pro and the ZWO 071MC Pro. Thanks!
Does ASIair automatically adjust the tracking speed, when you choose Goto Moon or any planet?! Because it should differ from the DeepSky tracking… or?!
@@Chorge1972 Hi, from memory there is a solar and lunar speed at the foot of the telescope tab, so you can adjust to lunar when viewing/imaging the Moon. Clear skies Ian
Thanks for the information. Beginner question..Can the zwo autofocuser be used without the ASI air? Cant afford both.
@@jonrobinson1026 Hi Jon, thanks for watching. Yes the auto focuser can be used without the ASIAIR. Look on the ZWO web site and it will tell you any other software you need to download to use it with other Astro management software such as NINA. Clear skies Ian
Nice...🫡
At the 19:25 mark you rotate the camera, is this a rotator you have fitted in the image train please?
Yes, it comes with the telescope, so you can rotate for your fov requirement. Clear skies, Ian
@@astrotimetraveller4622 I never knew that, it doesn't get mentioned in any of the telescopes blurb does it?
Or is that what this is one the FLO page '3” CNC Machined 11:1 Rotatable Dual-Speed Linear Power Focuser'?"
It’s on page 9 of the 120 manual, which you can get from the FLO page on the scope. Strange they don’t promote it as it’s very useful. The page 3 relates to the focuser only I believe. Kr Ian
Thanks. I’m upgrading shortly to the 150 with the ZWO 2600 mono, so it’s nice to get to see an Esprit being put together.
AEF, will not allow my scope to fit in its case, without cutting the foam, the result of cutting the foam, would result in not enough foam left to protect the scope at that point. NOT 1 video on the ASI EAF shows how to set the focuser to min for storage. Might be great for an observatory rig, but a pain for those who have to set up every night, if the EAF has to be removed from the focuser to enable fitment to the case
Im sure this beast will fit on my tracker
Nice
Excellent! The Image Composite Editor was exactly what I was looking for, after a night of shooting the moon with a Celestron 9.25 in SharpCap. One question - when you were showing the Backyard EOS program, was it connecting your computer to a WiFi hotspot on your Canon camera? I've left a rail position open on the top of the Celestron to mount an SRL to get photos with a wider field of view.
Hi thanks for watching. No the EOS program was on my laptop which was hard wired into the Cannon camera. I hope you can get ICE I know it’s not easy to find. Clear skies Ian
I actually did find ICE - the video link below discussed using ICE, and has a link to the WEB archive 'Wayback Machine' web page where you can still download the program. th-cam.com/video/074Ci6tuLs8/w-d-xo.html Thanks again. @@astrotimetraveller4622
Hi Ian - I'm also in the UK but a complete beginner... enjoyed your set-up video and this image looks great! You have a new subscriber.
Excellent video, thank you SIR!!
Tell me where you bought the 62 mm adapter ?
Hi, could I ask how you store the scope once you fitted EFA? I have the same scope and was going to fit the EFA the other day, then realised once I do it won’t fit in original hard case Cheers
Hi Mike, thanks for watching. Yeah it’s an issue. I now store my full scope with the filter wheel attached in a large low level cabinet, so never have to take the filter wheel off unless to clean filters etc. It makes set up easier, but you have to be careful not to hit the scope etc. when taking it out of the cabinet. Clear skies, kind regards Ian
Hmmm..Why you take one expo of minute and other ones are 5ms? I have 294mc pro and zenithstar..and i wanna shoot full moon this night :)
Hey you didn't include what you used to mount the gs, what did you get? Ty
Great video. The only way I can get an image from my asiair plus on to my tablet is in the preview mode. I also noticed that you had some icons that I don't have. Is there a step that I am missing to get a real time image?
After setting the zero then getting the figure for the maximum the tube will go out ,the maximum figure goes back to 60000 as in the video.Does that mean I have to reset the maximum figure every time I use the aef?
I read somewhere that one guy said to increase Gain to 140- 160 when using narrow band filters any comments on this tks
I see you are using an ASI294MC Pro. I'm considering this camera but I've read the flats exposure should be 3 to 5 seconds to alleviate calibration artifacts etc. You obviously aren't having any issues from what I can see. Have you ever had calibration artifacts using ASIAir auto flats. I have an C8 SCT. I'm testing a light panel now with an embroidery ring with T shirt material. Even at the lowest panel brightness two sheets of T shirt is too bright. Test with four T shirts, still won't calibrate. I used the white sleeve to store the light panel. With this it finally calibrates. The histogram is average 47303. Exposure is auto calculated at 10secs. My goal is 5 second exposure with the histogram below 32768. When I use manual method 5 seconds, four T shirts, white sleeve. panel on lowest dimmable setting then I get 23671 average a little too low. Panel dimming isn't adjustive in fine enough amounts. I'm thinking of purchasing some neutral density filter film to tape on the panel.
Hi, thanks for watching. No I’ve never had any calibration artefacts using the ASI auto flat. I use a white rugby shirt doubled over the lens, a light panel and the ASI auto flats are usually around a third of a second. I do dark flats at the same frame rate and all seems to work fine. I have high histograms similar to yours, when I did manual I aimed for 25,000 to 30,000, but the high histogram doesn’t seem to impact in the calibrated image. Clear skies Ian
Appreciate the video. Be aware that as of 9/2023 [or maybe earlier] the Takahashi kit does not work as described. First, you have to now assemble the grate [no big deal] but the 35 mm screws are too long now 40 mm so you either have to use a s$itload of washers, cut the screw or buy shorter screws. The install on my Esprit 120 has been pretty tough actually. The spindle holder did not fit well into the focuser so it was tough to get it tightened onto the spindle without it locking up. I know Starizona has a pre-fit holder but it is back-ordered for who knows how long, right? Overall a PIA [and not yet done]. Update: Turns out I had a defective ZWO EAF cylinder. Purchased another EAF and it fit perfectly!
@dadwhitsett it would be great if you can update this comment in the other video related to the same subject. I checked your comment there and I thought I would have issues installing mine, then I checked here and I saw that you had a defective cylinder :-)
Excellent tutorial, very informative, many thanks for sharing!
You haven’t posted in awhile. I hope all is well.
Thanks for asking. All good, have just been busy on other things, Hope to pick up again in the new year. Clear skies Ian
My name is shigeru and I live in Japan (near Yokohama). I ordered EFW today. It will arrive tomorrow. Ian_san, this video is timely and very easy to understand. I want to play it over and over again to understand it. thank you ian_san
I just saw your first light video for the Esprit 120. I’ve had mine since 2018. The telescope setup has evolved over time. Like you, I put it on an EQ6R Pro. Initially, there was an unmod’d Nikon 850 on it, no guiding. Two years ago the focuser fell apart. I bought a feather touch. Even it needed better knobs. A buddy made some on the lathe. Now I use the ASI6200MM and a guider. Last spring I bought the SW reducer. My lathe buddy made an adapter for the Feathertouch to mate with the reducer. The faster system is wonderful. Try the reducer someday.
Quite a good result although I think stacking stills is the way to go for sharper results, particularly given that modern mirrorless cameras can take stills exceptionally fast. Take care.
Bonjour quel est le type de vis pour mettre une queue d’aronde au dessus
Beautiful work. I just cannot follow because it’s too fast and I’m new to PI.
Really like the addition of what was happening on earth when the light left all those targets.
Excellent video. I can’t wait to try it out for myself.
Hey Ian, thats amazing! ive never used the video mode on either of my ASIAIR'S before! but know I know how, the moon is my next target! Thanks for sharing Clear Skies!
4:38 I recently learned that you don't have to go back to Home before using Go To. You can Go To directly from the sideways angle in the second part of Polar Align.
Thanks for this very useful tip.
Espectacular fabuloso
Excellent tutorial Question On my asiair pro app after I capture and I go in play videos it’s NOT showing the icons on below the screen as I see on yours stacking left delete right On mine is pure blank no icons Any ideas ? I was storing video’s directly to usb is maybe why? Than I took the usb to computer it was showing avi files and jpg pictures already stacked
That is an impressive result! And without using PIPP and all the other programs. Just with the stack feature of the little red box. Really great image.
Excellent pictures too
Excellent video One question I have How do zoom in the object I couldn’t see it .
Really nice video ! Thanks very much for this great job.
Exactly the topic i was looking for. I still have mc, looking at these same filters, and how to get started.
Very nice Ian thanks! I'll be doing this next week with my FF80 when it arrives. I have to say (without wanting to denegrating your good result) that final M33 image closeup doesn't appear to be any more in focus than my own M33 taken with a similar (EON 130 APO) telescope and a Bahtinov mask. The autofocus seems to take a lot of time too (and 'waiting' time always drags slower than 'busy' time). Living in a city flat, I have to stand guard over the rig when it is operating, so I use live mode EAA to amuse me while I'm capturing lights. I only use 'plan' to remember and manage my calibration routine and run that at the start of the session. But it seems the EAF refocus triggers are only available in plan mode. I can't help feeling I let myself fall victim to the hype and bought me a solution to a problem I don't have, together with some features I cant use! You would think I'd have learned at my age 🤣. Still I'm sure to enjoy building the new rig and playing with the toy!
please verify the back focus spacing from the flattener to the imaging surface. you say 75mm. I believe it is 55 mm from back of flattener to image surface. I took this from cloudy nights regarding the set up "Backfocus of 75mm they write in the manual is misleading, it is actually 55 mm starting from the M48 adapter that sits behind the field flattener. 75mm is the required distance from the edge of the flattener to the sensor, but included with the flattener, you should have an adapter that allows to keep a remaining 55mm backfocus to your sensor, which will be a plug and play on any DSLR, and / or building an imaging train to reach 55mm with the ASI1600. Fortunately, ZWO included ALL the necessary adapters to reach that distance. I have already showed my imaging train with exactly this setup somewhere on this forum I believe..
Hi, I’ve always had it at 75mm and have it in focus. Never tried 55mm. Clear skies Ian
Thank You!!!
Nice, just ordered one after looking around for a larger refactor for the last year. Pretty excited can’t wait to get it under some dark skies.
