Hi, I’m Inger! I’m a book & film lover chatting about it on the internet. Here you'll find an eclectic mix of book and film content with some writing stuff sprinkled in between. I don't typically read the popular 'tiktok' books, so I hope to introduce you to some interesting and off-the-beaten-path writers, books, films, etc. If you like that kind of stuff, come join our cosy nook. I'm happy to have you :)

Hi inger really nice to see where you are living and that you are experiencing snow! You must be missing the warmth of the sun, your garden and that wonderful view you used to have back home. I looked up Lilli Palmer and noticed she was also an artist so I had a look at her abstracts which were very good. The Red Letter, is such an old classic but I have not read it but I think it is a moral tale that might be a challenge to read in that the writing is very old fashioned. I am going to read Under the Greenwood Tree by Thomas Hardy, I have actually made a start on it and so far it is going to be quite hard to read as everything about it is very ye old England with lots of characters and not much happens, well not so far! But I am determined to carry on! Still reading the Morville Hours by Katherine Swift which is full of interesting things about history, gardens and insects! Sorry you didn't enjoy your book, but at least you didn't give up! Have a good rest of the week!
@@carolinesimmill4962 Hi Caroline! Yes, I have started to miss the sunny days of South Africa, but we’ve had some sun here the past couple of days which has been nice. Different weather conditions all bring their own kind of beauty, and we’ve not had proper snow in my hometown in SA for so long, so I have been enjoying the snow too. Yes, I’ve also seen that Lilli was an artist, though I haven’t looked up any of her paintings, I will have to do so. The Red Letter is her most popular book, I think, and is a sort of fictionalised autobiography of her life and marriage to Rex Harrison. I’m glad to hear your reading is going well, even if the Hardy is slow. I also found that nothing much happens for the first half of the book when I read Far from the Madding Crowd, so perhaps all of his books are like that. Have a good rest of your week and thanks for watching, as always :)
@@ingerlouise 😀
I enjoyed this
@@ntriciacooke Thank you! I’m glad you did :)
Amazing video. It’s always wonderful to get an insight into one of the best authors ever. In terms of a recommendation outside of her mainstream novels, I would go The Eye of theHeron. It’s the best novel I’ve read under 200 pages, it has a really interesting approach to world building and some amazing discussion of non-violence activism in a violent world.
@@harrysumption430 Thank you for watching! And also for the recommendation, I hadn’t heard of that title before, but it sounds very interesting! I’ll definitely check it out :)
It has been years since I read 'A Picture of Dorian Grey' by Oscar Wilde. It is not too long so you can quickly read it. Let us know how you get on with the books!
@@carolinesimmill4962 Thanks! I will :)
The snag with e-readers is that you're looking at a screen for hours on end, and that can make your eyes sore.
@@newromantico That’s a valid point… I’ll have to see if that happens to me, but I also don’t think that I’ll be reading on my e-reader for such long stretches at a time, since I don’t usually do that with physical books either. But it’s something to keep in mind. Thanks for watching!
Great haul! Is that a kindle? I'm looking to get myself a kobo clara in the near future.
@@amir703 Thanks! Nope, it isn’t. It’s a German brand called Tolino. I’ve heard that Kobo’s are quite popular and they seem to be a good e-reader. Hope you manage to get your hands on one!
Whenever I need to muse on a topic I am writing about or researching,I take a bath. I think there is a huge difference between a bath and a shower. Less noise in a bath, all the body covered at the same time in water if you wish( except of course the head), you can just be there for a while and think in silence.....
@@patod4 That’s so true! A bath is definitely more conducive to deep thinking than a shower. Thanks for watching!
I loved this video, it felt so calming. Also i love this part when new year starts and we set up our goals and journals for the rest of the year!! Ahh so fun ❤❤
@@ad_sin3689 Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I'm all for ditching reading goals, for all the reasons you named, and then some. Let's leave speed reading for throw-away content to the booktok girlies.
@@evastrange Yes! I am so here for this!
Happy New Year to you! I'm starting off 2025 with A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving. What about you? I think the only reading goal I have for this year is to read more books than I did last year 😂 In regards to video requests, maybe you could do like a top 10 favourite movies/documentaries/series of all time?
@@amir703 Thank you! That sounds like a good book to start off the year… I’ve heard lots about it but haven’t read it. I’m finishing off a book I started last year but didn’t get around to finishing and I’ve also started listening to Intermezzo by Sally Rooney on audiobook. Thanks for the video idea… I will have to go and think long and hard to come up with a favourites of all time list! Thanks for watching, as always :)
I bought my husband the Stephen Hawking book and he found it very good. Though found trying to understand black holes and the big bang really hard to grasp, it isn't easy is it! Thank you for talking about the book. Which part of the book did you like best.
@@carolinesimmill4962 I’m glad he enjoyed it! Yes… they were quite difficult to understand, though I think the section about black holes was my favourite. I’m quite interested in quantum physics and the whole Schrödinger’s Cat theory… so that section piqued my interest the most.
@@ingerlouise awesome!😃
Hi inger all the best for 2025! I am continuing my seasonal reading which also helps with my nature journaling. I have three almanacs on the go at the moment. I am not sure if I mentioned to you before that I am reading Nature Tales for Winter nights which is very good do look it up! I am actually writing a few lines on each tale I am reading just so I remember it. Nice to read only a page or perhaps some are four pages at most by each author. Still reading Jane Eyre which I haven't really managed to read during the holidays as planned. Your tracking system really looks interesting thanks. It would be good to perhaps see a little of your surrounding area that you are living in. Maybe a well known spot or a quiet place that you discovered. Do you have snow, we do? Always good to watch some cooking or flower arranging! mainly because it is very relaxing to watch. How is your ginger cat doing back home?
@@carolinesimmill4962 Hi Caroline! All the best to you too! I will look up Nature Tales, it does sound very intriguing… I hope you get some time to read Jane Eyre… I’m yet to read it myself. I will have a few clips of the surrounding area in my next reading vlog, for sure :) We had a bit of snow the day before yesterday, but most of it has melted again. The cat is doing well, and being cute as ever!
I read 22 books this year. This is the first time I've read this many books in a single year 😂 My favourites are: - The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard - The Fisherman by John Langan. For non-fiction, they are: - The Wager by David Grann - The Crime of the Century by Dennis L. Breo and William J. Martin
@@amir703 Congrats! That’s awesome 🙌🏻 I haven’t heard of any of those books, but I’m going to check them out and see if any of them are for me.
Thank you! Since you seem to gravitate more towards literary fiction, I think you might enjoy The Other Valley as well. Hope you're having a great NYE and I look forward to hearing about your 2025 reading plans!
@ Thanks! And the same to you :)
This looks fun! Unfortunately, my poor attention span wouldn't allow me to do this 😂 Anyway, I'm currently reading The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles and really enjoying it so far. Maybe you could do a reading only historical fiction for 24 hours type of video?
@@amir703 That’s a great suggestion! I love historical fiction, so I think I’d really enjoy that. Thank you
Mmm... no phone during the entire video... impressive ;-)
@germanfranco4863 Thanks! It does make it easier to read when not looking at ones phone, so I tried to keep it on the opposite side of the room from me :)
Also, Ursula Nordstrom!
I'll have to look her up! Thanks for the recommendation :)
I'm in! This has always been something I've wanted to do for the longest time. My phone usage has definitely caused my attention span to decrease over the years. Sometimes I can't even read a few paragraphs without my mind wandering. Have you ever dealt with a similar problem? I can also relate to the lethargic feeling you get from spending hours on the phone without taking any breaks.
That's great! It definitely helped me break my phone addiction! I can relate to a wandering mind, I still struggle with that sometimes, but it has gotten less. Hope doing this also helps you :)
Sadly, i needed to stop watching because the background sound gave me a beadache. You do you, but I recommend buying a mic 👍
I love writing my zero drafts by hand. I prefer unlined paper, as it feels more freeing, so I usually just write on blank printer paper. For outline/ideas that come later, I have post-it notes where I jot those ideas down, typically organized by scene. Write on!
that seems like a pretty good system! thanks for sharing :)
I use a Kaweco classic fountain pen as it flows much better than using a biro. I find writing by hand slows me right down as I have to carefully think about what I am going to write! I do make lots of mistakes and my worse fault is using the same word in the next sentence to either describe something or I just repeat myself which is annoying! After writing on lots of small bits of paper I write it again in long hand onto ruled paper. Anyway at this rate it will take me ten years to write an introduction to my book! Would be interested in Sylvia Plath's writing routine, though in the movie when she got writer's block she baked so many cakes she could have opened a cake shop! Great video thanks!
I'm looking into getting a fountain pen myself! Being able to change the ink colour seems like it'll be fun. Much better than having to buy a whole new pen each time, too. I have done a video where I followed Sylvia's routine (no cake baking involved, however) but I know her routine changed a lot at different stages of her life, so I might try it again from a different stage in her life. Thanks for watching and commenting, as always :)
Do Brandon Sanderson! 😁
I'll see if I can find his routine! I haven't read any of his books but I know he's a very popular author. Thanks for the suggestion :)
Thank you I love these videos! As someone who always does a first draft by hand I completely agree with you about the editing. However it does get me writing and worry less about how it reads also it helps me memorize names and lore. Yes my memory is that bad 😂 Interviewing an accomplished author and asking her about Stephen Kings, I assume, unrequested advice. Is absolutely unhinged and I feel would never happen if she was a man. It would be bad enough to ask about a criticism but advice it just centers the other author on what is your interview.
I'm glad you like them! I always have fun making them and trying to get a glimpse into the mind of an accomplished author...
This was interesting. Makes me want to read one of her books. 3h in one go sounds fairly acceptable. Though I'm sure you were tired enough after that. If you could figure out Jrr tolkiens writing routine it would have been quite something to see.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm going to look into his routine and see if I can find it! I'm sure it will be an interesting one.
You're a speedy reader. I've spent the last six weeks trying to read Mary Stewart's "Thunder on the Right", and I'm still only on page 59...!
@@newromantico I’ve always thought that I’m a slow reader, so it’s nice to hear that you think otherwise 😅 Good luck finishing your book!
At first I thought the Stephen Hawking's book would be too much to read in so short a time. Then I went to look at it online and it looks very interesting. Just ordered it for my husband! Good luck with the reads! I will think about what I have read this year as I have read quite a few books thinking about it!
@@carolinesimmill4962 That’s great! I hope he enjoys it! And I hope you’re able to squeeze in a few more good ones :)
Good luck to you! These sound like interesting books. Just counted and I have read 35 books at this point. I do not have a goal, but I am actually not sure I'll get to 40. Let's see.
@@thisisveryannoying Wooh! Go you :) Sounds like you’ve had a good reading year!
I am moving back to my hometown in a month or so. I have started slowly moving my books a two months ago. Every time I went to visit I would bring a couple of books to make future move easier. Weeeeell after few rounds I figured that I am not even making a dent so I had to upgrade to full suit case of books each time. In the end it was also not enough. Bibliophile problems.
@@drarsen33 bibliophile problems! 😆 you’re absolutely right!
I believe I have mentioned my randomization approach which might help with those classics that are eternally on "to read" list but never read. I keep to read list in digital format together with any book that I have received as a gift etc. For digital books my dynamic is something like... I will read one book that was earliest entry on the list (to make sure that one that are oldest are not eternally overlooked), then one that is latest (to read what I am currently interested in), after that one randomly picked by some random number generator (Because list has more than 400 entries...and to spice it up a bit). And I will repeat the process. For books that I have in paper I will actually always go for random number generator. Of course I make some exceptions. For instance I have decided to read Karl Jung's books by publication date so if I draw one of his books I will not read specific book in question but the one that is next in line chronologically.
@@drarsen33 That is smart… Luckily I have a very small physical TBR now, so I think I will be able to get through them all without much decision fatigue. And for whenever I go back to South Africa, I’ll just read a couple while I’m there and then bring some more books back with me every time I visit.
I read "Beloved", "The Bluest Eye", "Sula" and "A Mercy" by Toni Morrison so far. I can recommend all of them, but I would recommend reading "The Bluest Eye" and "Beloved" next.
@@veganforanimals28 Thank you for the recommendations! I can’t believe I forgot ‘Beloved’ I will see which of those two I can find :)

That’s such a good idea for journaling! But I’d like to mention that knowing that life was slower back then doesn’t mean it wasn’t a luxury to write so much as Virginia did. Only wealthy people had the possibility to be literate, educated and full of free time to dedicate to their passions-so that you can see through their writing what author was rich and which was poor.

Gosh some difficult choices to make! So glad kitty came to say hello! The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is not an easy read. I have the series on DVD which is nice and atmospheric and I also listened to it as an audio book. However the book itself did tend to wear me down. I wanted to shake Helen Graham by the shoulders as I could not understand her overly devote nature, especially when it came to her decision to return to her prior home to undertake what she felt was her 'duty'. Yet there are strengths in this book, the realism of how gender roles played out. How appallingly spoilt boys and young men were and how ignored young women were. However much we feel there is something 'romantic' about those days in truth owning nothing which is what amounted to a woman's life must have been pretty dire. Also Charlotte Bronte whose work I really love as a person annoys me a bit because she was either protecting or embarrassed by her sister's works. I hadn't realized that Charlotte had not allowed 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' to be published until after Anne's death! Charlotte also didn't like 'Wuthering Heights' which is hardly surprising because everyone in the book is really unlikeable, yet it is also a masterpiece especially as it was written by a young woman who had no experience of love or romance or so we are told. I believe Branwell appears in all of the sister's books as the unpleasant and violent character who set out to destroy the peace and harmony that could have existed both in his own life and in how the novels develop. However without him perhaps the Bronte's would never have written those incredible books! Have a great trip!!
@@carolinesimmill4962 wow! you’ve given me a lot of information i didn’t know! thank you :) it’s so interesting to read the writer’s works and then to read about them as people and their lives… one always tends to influence the other. have a great week!
