Is it really fake if it sounds so good? AudioQuest Dragon XLR cable review!
For the internal build take a look at first look video here:
th-cam.com/video/RLMqxoHcN6I/w-d-xo.html
I got encouraged by the quality of the AQ fakes I got earlier and so I decided to go big right at the top and get the ultimate monster. My wallet got badly burned in the fight by this fake Dragon, but... it was worth it!
----------------------------------------------
In September 2024 I had this long chat over the mail with one of you guys (best regards, Kumar).
It was about the prices and availability of audio gear, especially in developing countries.
So anyway he made me rethink a few things and as a result I since then I am adding reviewed speaker/interconnect cable links here in the description.
We're all grownups (YT statistics tell me almost all of us are over 40), we make our own decisions.
I'm not recommending these purchases, but I also won't take that decision away from you.
Original cables are way overpriced and not really available to audiophiles not only from developing countries, but to all of us - let's be honest about it. Check the links for the lowest overall price (shipping included) as this will vary from country to country:

    Well, I just received my "Clock" and 50 ohm cable. I plugged it into my LHY SW6 network switch, which has the LHY fiber optic FMC attached running out to my Volumio Rivo streamer. Yes, there was a noticeable difference, the voicing is better, there is more clarity without sibilance, the soundstage grew, along with better instrument separation. We are listening to Tony Bennett and KD Lang off of the "Wonderful World" album streaming from Qobuz through my Roon Nucleus One. I'm using the ToneWinner AD-1PRE+ DAC via USB, out to the Cary clone tube preamp to the Dartzeel clone D5Pro. Speakers are the Cabasse Murano bookshelves. If you have a piece of gear that you can attach a 10 mhz clock to, grab this one and save a few hundred dollars. The clock came with the antenna, the wall wart power supply which I will upgrade and the clock itself. I did use the antenna to grab a signal, which only took a few seconds, and I will leave it plugged in. This was a very worthwhile purchase! Thank you for making this video Tom! I had no clue a clock would make this much of an impact in my particular system.

    I was going through some of my CD's yesterday, and I came across a rare 'gold disk' remaster of Janis Ian''s classic 'Between the Lines'. This was remastered by Kevin Gray (of Audio Fidelity). I have 3 different masterings of this CD, a high quality rip from my LP done on a Linn Sondek and a recent 24/192 remaster (using original master tapes) And it is this audiophile CD remaster that sounds the best by far. Reading its liner notes it says... "All analog cables to and from our console are Audioquest "Niagra DBS". We also use Audioquest AES/EBU digital and Audioquest NRG power cables" Too bad this superb CD has long been out of print and now trades hands for $100+ Point...not ALL recording and mastering studios use standard Canare or Mogami cables, especially the ones who are focused more on sound quality. Somewhere in my collection I have a disk that I believe that was recorded and mastered using Audioquest Diamond (all silver) cables-but I cannot remember which one-so I cannot easily look it up.

    Thanks for the video! How is the channel balance when playing at low volumes? Reason I ask is that I have the same Alps potentiometer in my Bada DC-222T mk2 (DestinY branded from an EU-importer in Germany) integrated hybrid amp and the channel balance is quite bad at low volumes when using sensitive speakers. Otherwise a truly superb integrated amp the Bada (once you upgrade the stock cheapo chinese no-name tubes). Just wondering is there a VCA in this preamp and the actual audio signal doesn't even go thru the potentiometer? Really wish all of these clones would use the same resistor network potentiometer board from the Cary & Levinson clones.

    There is an Audioholics vid testing the Audioquest Thunderbird Zero speaker cable that uses the same DBS pack. They found that with the DBS pack in circuit, even without the batteries, it was increasing the cables capacitance and adding distortion to their test signals. They do note that this distortion all takes place well outside the range of human audibility. Audioholics take is that, at least this cable, does the opposite to their published claims.

    • @k4syx
      @k4syx วันที่ผ่านมา

      And they may be right, though my observations were with DBS powered. DBS (to my ears) makes them sound a little smoother and organic. But I prefer them with DBS disconnected because I can clearly hear more micro details without DBS. It was the same with real AQ XLRs I owned (and sold now like Water or Yukon). Maybe it's like with tube preamps: maybe we perceive these distortion as something we like. I need to take a look at that video tomorrow, I wonder what exactly and how they measured. Thanks!

    The best kind of cable are those that get out of the way of your system.. so exactly like you describe this cables! I myself make my own cables just some 0.4 mm 99.99999% silver in a 2mm teflon tube so its actually air thats shielding the cable.. i have compared it to all kinds of cables even a 40k interlink and only the 40k cable was able to get close to the performance of my simple .4mm solid core silver! And it might sound strange but actually the diameter is the secret! I dont know why but thicker cables sound like they lose damping Maybe its something you could try? I use this cable for every thing, even tried pushing 200 rms... Didnt even get warm, Anyway i am curious to your thoughts about this, all my cables together dont even add up to 500 dollar. All these monster prised cables pretending to have magic powers... Its the biggest myth/scam in audio

    • @k4syx

      I am using solid silver in teflon for short critical runs inside of audio equipement I am modding, it works wonders. But its expensive! For my main speaker setup I would need four 3m long runs (biamp) so thats 12m of solid silver! I've done the math some time ago and it was more expensive than my whole current setup :D BTW the cheapest way to get silver wires is to buy them in jewelry stores (not the retail jewelers, just the guys that supply raw materials). Still, to expensive...

    • @GavinHodgson
      @GavinHodgson วันที่ผ่านมา

      If they upgraded the connectors I would have kept it as it’s otherwise an exceptional cable. Works well with solid state, some tube amps can sound a little brittle/harsh in the highs with them (even after 200hrs break in) - so caution, but AliExpress is good on returns if you do find that this occurs with your equipment. But, these are fakes - the conductors aren’t pure silver, as pure silver is also more soft, if you open the XLR and bend one of the wires it’s stiffer… like copper - but you have confirmed that the conductor is silver plated copper anyway… The geometry is a good match for the original - but I very much doubt there’s any graphene in there. The silver plated copper, as well the poor XLR connectors, are likely why I could hear harshness in the highs with tube amps. This all being said - it is still an exceptional cable and very very difficult to beat for the price. Even though it’s a clone the Audioquest cable geometry that they’ve followed pretty well must play a large part in this cable’s performance. I still have the Dragon speaker cables (no appreciable faults and the connectors are much better quality/metal) and for interconnects I’m not doing my own DIY silver - once you hear silver you can’t unhear it.

      @ Yes, solid silver rules. If it would be just a tad bit cheaper :) These are silver plated copper, the plating is pretty thick but its no solid silver. I also think that the secret sauce is the geometry and shielding, seems like the material is of secondary importance. Thats what I got so far from all the different fakes (and some original ones I owned).. But as you say: all in all this is exceptional interconnect for what it is!

    I bought a stereo 3 meter Musical Interface Technologies MT-750 Extended speaker cable second hand almost 20 yrs ago, for an absurd (for me, back then) amount just because I could. I noticed a very annoying wind chime outside my house every time I played a certain part of a reference recording, I got so annoyed I walked outside with my gun to find it and shoot it, could not find it. That was the level of resolution this cable was able to reveal. I had to eat my words making fun of my audiophile friends. The sky is the limit, the only thing that matters is how far/able you’re willing to go. It’s no joke.

    Based upon your 'First Look' a few months ago-I took the plunge and got a 1m pair of RCA 'Dragons'. It replaced a Xangsane pure silver IC, also from AliE, which in turn replaced a Chord Anthem (a $300+ interconnect). I have in the past owned $1000+ hand crafted cables and tried many more out-including ones that retail for over $10,000. The Dragon was by a very large margin the best interconnect I have ever heard, owned or used. This includes some AliE 'Nordost Odin' RCA knockoffs, which were quite disappointing. Every band within the audio spectrum is improved. Yes, the bass is deeper (much deeper) and tighter. But for me it was the glorious midrange tonality and articulation with the addition of a true 3-D sound stage that was intoxicating. I listen to a LOT of 70's obscure prog-rock, most of which have very murky CD mastering, that makes for a very uninvolving presentation-even boring-even when the musicianship is excellent. The Dragon somehow managed to separate the musical threads that where previously woven into a Gordian knot and at least make the CDs enjoyable, even if they still did not sound good. One feature of competant prog-rock is very complex yet melodic bass lines, which all other cables managed to obscure with clouds. I was so impressed by the 1m RCA pair (which goes from Gustard R26 to vintage modded Pioneer C21 preamp) that I got a 3m RCA pair to go from preamp to AliE 'Goldmund 29M' monoblock power amps. Another sonic victory. BTW. the R26 is fortified by a U18 DDC and a LHY OCK-2 10MHz clock. So I then ordered some 3m Dragon speaker cables to replace my Cardas ones. Again the same quality of improvements that the interconnects offered, although not quite to the same degree. Currently I am waiting on the Dragon High-Current power cable to be delivered, that will go from my dedicated 20A line to the Audience AR-6 power distribution unit, where it will be replacing (hopefully) a Pangea AC-9 SE Mk2 fire-hose power cord-which until now has been the best PC I had tried (and I have tried PC costing up to $10,000 USD!!) The only negative I can say is about the 2nd set of RCA IC I got. The RCA plugs were a noticeably looser fit than the first set I got. But they still work fine. But still, for the $670 I paid (it was a 3m set), I would have hoped for slightly higher quality plugs with a better fit. I would much rather higher quality plugs than the luxury padded zip up tote-bag the cables come with. BTW, all 'Audioquest' HDMI cables from AliE are no longer shipping to USA addresses, but for some reason it is still possible to get interconnects and speaker cables. Yes, your 'First Look' has cost me close to $2000 USD, and yet I am richer because of it.

      Haha it was the same for me after I bit the bullet and bought the first one. Thanks for sharing, you have a way with words and it was a pleasure to read. I had also owned R26 but my electrostats had clearly shown all problems with detail loss coming from resistor ladder (as compared to delta sigma stuff). But I also found out that external 10MHz clock is game changer, I am still using it with my X26Pro and probably will with X26 III that was delivered here on Friday. But I got 10MHz OCXO built for radio astronomy and amateur radio communication, it was way cheaper than "audio" ones. Technically speaking mine is even better because its OCXO with GPS clock control and sync (which doesnt make any difference for Gustard, but still!:))

But the reality is that no studio will buy 100m of AQ cables to be mingled stepped on laying on the floors. They are too expensive for that kind of abuse. Weird real life example: I have a couple of diamond drills that I had to get for some crazy stuff I needed to do around the house. I do. But for 99.99% of the holes I make in my concrete walls I am using regular steel ones. If you do not hear any difference between a fake and orginal. (When fake compared to a orginal is not sources same copper and not same purity maybe not even same geometri and so forth..) Because of hifi zone I bought the k2 and the dragon. The k2 is fantastic, but the dragon is better in almost all aspects. There is something in the upper mids of the k2 I wish the dragon has it too. But with everything else the dragon is a clear winner. Hifi zone mentioned the k2 is more 3D, not in my case, listening on the dynaudio heritage it's quite equal. Concerning the dbs, I like it better with dbs plugged in, in a certain way it is more detailed using dbs. For example listening to a acoustic guitar, it sounds more natural to me. As a professional musician I listen to it and when I unplug the dbs I always think yeah great but it's not that instrument anymore, that's not "exactly" as a guitar sounds. I try to figure out what's the body and the strings of that guitar, listening to the resonance of the guitar, comparing how low and high tones work together etc... Dbs makes it noticeable better. That's just what I think to hear. Thank you very much for your very good videos, hifi zone ! Because of you my sound is way better. By the way, I bought the Wel signature xlr, it's absolutely great as you mentioned.
