REPLICATING THE ORIGINAL YODA PUPPET (LONG VERISON)
This video is an (almost) complete walk-through of the ENTIRE 4-year long project of re-creating an authentic Yoda puppet made entirely from original film production assets. Even the original head mechanism is an exact replica of the one built by Stuart Freeborn and used in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

So if you're a fan of the OT version of Yoda, this video is a love letter to you! Using my puppet, we recreated all the shots in the scene where Yoda reveals himself to Luke and inserted them into the actual film. This Yoda puppet is a faithful re-creation of the original filming puppet from The Empire Strikes Back and is made entirely from original production assets. #yoda #starwars #puppet #g...

While at D23 Expo 2022 we bumped into the voice of (animated) Ahsoka Tano herself, Ashley Eckstein and had the honor of showing here our fully functional authentic Yoda puppet from The Empire Strikes Back. Thanks so much Ashley and we hope you enjoyed helping bring him to life! #yoda #starwars #puppet #grogu #theempirestrikesback #jedi #ahsoka

Yoda puppet finished mech demo

Here's a video demonstrating the finished mech I built for my ESB Yoda puppet. It's a replica of the original mech created by Stuart Freeborn for ESB and ROTJ.
This Yoda is amazing, even better made than the Original . Please let me know if it possible to buy it, even if like a static life size statue instead puppet . Please let me know how, thank you.
i dont know why im crying but i am.. fantastic job guys
Thanks!! Us too. lol
Holy cow.
Thanks!
AMAZING
Thanks!!
This is an awesome project!
Thanks!
@@STARWARSICONS Of course! I've seen the costumes as well, they're superb! I love seeing people with this much attention to detail. Would love to see you delve into the audio side of things someday, recreating things like C-3P0's modulation or the explosion sounds.
Didn’t realise Yoda had feet lol
Yeah they're like little chicken/lizard feet. lol
Hey dude, this is outstanding! Do you have Discord, I'd love to collaborate!
Thanks for the kind words. Have no idea what discord is. lol
@@STARWARSICONS What's the best way to contact you?
@@StarWarsStory via email contact@starwarsicons(dot)com
wow... just wow
Thanks!!
How did you get these molds? 🤯
Before Stuart passed, he sold off his original assets to several private collectors. I was given access to those assets along with access to the original skull/mech and wardrobe which still reside in the LFL archives.
@@STARWARSICONS Amazing. What would you say is the easiest way for one to replicate the head mold in order to create similar Yoda puppets?
The birth, life, death, and resurrection of Yoda puppet is the gospel I preach.
Love that!
This is incredible! Puppet Yoda for the Prequels, pretty please? 🥺
We defiitely want to do this! I think the only thing holding it up is not having accurate prequel wardrobe.
@@STARWARSICONS As someone who definitely has a big preference towards the OT I don't necessarily care, but I admire the attention to detail!
@@LordVaderTyrannus I agree, still I bet seeing the OT yoda in the prequel would be pretty cool.
@@STARWARSICONS I have been interested in doing this for a while. I have a cyberman yoda that I put against a blue screen, but the yoda I have is not nearly as lifelike as yours. It's also just the head, not a full puppet like you have. I used canva's ai object removal and the clone stamp tool in photoshop to remove yoda from the background of scenes from the prequels. With some clever masking you can replace yoda, I can send you some examples if you're interested
@@manx306 I appreciate it, but I think if I'm going to do it I'd like to do it as practically as possible without bluescreen. :)
I had to do a double-take before I realised the footage at the end wasn't from the original film. This is incredible. Much better than the puppet from TLJ.
Thanks! There are two other vids on my channel that show the entirety of those clips with dialogue and everything. :)
THIS is Yoda!!! Makes me wonder why the puppet originally used in Phantom Menace looked more like Ernest Borgnine!
Thanks! In order to authentically recreate the puppet, I had access to the original mech and wardrobe which is still in the LFL archives, the rest of the components were acquired from private collectors who obtained them directly from Stuart Freeborn before he passed. Most of those components are not accessible by LFL which is why they've struggled with an ESB era likeness/performance. We tried our best to honor Frank's amazing performances as best we could in our shot for shot scene recreation videos which can also be found on this channel. :)
@@STARWARSICONS wow, amazing that you acquired all that! It still blows my mind that Lucasfilm couldn’t even recreate Yoda properly.
Luke's "Yoda!" has a special meaning here. This is the art of storytelling in a physical creation right here. Kudos.
Luke's Yoda, I like that! Thanks for the kind words!
Stuart Freeborn would be proud.
Thanks for saying so. I really hope so. :)
Well Lucasfilm should defo be offering to buy this off you, could between Phantom Menace and The Last Jedi, theyve never managed to get Yodas look right
Thanks! That's partially because they never had access to the original components like I did. Getting their attention is quite difficult. lol
SO impressed guys!
Thanks!!
This is Yoda.
And THAT’S how you do the real Yoda and get it right, Disney! Damn impressive stuff, I was actually excited to see him again, after all these years.
Thanks! Seeing him again after all these years is EXACTLY how we felt as well!
My jaw hit the floor when I realized that was your recreation and not Yoda in the movie scenes!!! Amazing work.
Thanks so much! Check out my page for the full length versions. There are 2 different ones!
That was insane! Disney said they used the "original molds" but why does YOURS look leagues better than theirs??? Incredible work! You made a Museum level piece!
Because Rian Johnson the dumb dumb recreated the Yoda from return of the Jedi, when people expected the one from empire.
This is amazing and needs to be put in the hands of Frank Oz for a test drive...(Not that your puppeteering is anything to sneeze at)
No offense taken. Frank is the man. Unfortunately, the interior of the head mech is precisely fit to my hand size/shape so he wouldn't be able to. Best I can do is emulate and extrapolate from the amazing performance Frank and his team put together.
I don't understand why the puppet in the ST and (before the re-edit) Phantom Menace were SO much worse than this one. This looks extremely close but for some reason the puppets in those films looked strange and very different to the point where the PT CGI one would have been better.
Thanks! In order to authentically recreate the puppet, I had access to the original mech and wardrobe which is still in the LFL archives, the rest of the components were acquired from private collectors who obtained them directly from Stuart Freeborn before he passed. Sam Witwer staying on brand lol
I want one
It would be awesome if you could use your puppet to recreate some of the Yoda scenes from the Prequels!
I 1000% agree!!
Are you going to remake the Episode 1 version of the Yoda puppet?
Have to say I'm not personally much of a fan of that version, but would like to recreate some of the ep 1 scenes with the ESB era looking puppet as in my opinion would have been epic.
Holy heck! The REAL Yoda is back!
Yes!! That's exactly the response we want!
absolutely un real work. like i just watched it for the first time all over again
Thanks!!
Sería genial poder recrear la escena de Yoda en el episodio VIII con esta versión del maestro verde, disney debería contratarlos o aprender de ustedes o de usted
Thanks you!
Shame they didn’t consult you making the puppet for TLJ. That thing looked like the movie itself, a third-rate attempt to capture the magic of childhood.
Well maybe one day there will be an opportunity to use this puppet for an official production. ;)
I was waiting for the comparison, then realized it wasn’t the original footage and was the new puppet. Mind blowing.
I love that! But yeah maybe doing something wrong if people aren't realizing that's new shot for shot footage with our puppet.
Are these for sale?
Excellent work
Thanks Collin!
Beautiful work, and I’ve seen the condition of the original in person )and that was 20yrs ago) so this is also amazing for “archival” reasons. Also really makes me appreciate Frank Oz’s capacity as a puppeteer, he really brought that puppet to life👀
Thanks! In order to authentically recreate the puppet, I had access to the original mech and wardrobe which is still in the LFL archives, the rest of the components were acquired from private collectors who obtained them directly from Stuart Freeborn before he passed. Disney couldn’t have done it better. But then, when do they, these days?
I'm hoping they'll just ask me. ;)
absolutely insane super cool!!
Thanks Owen!
Yes. As I suspected. The BTS is as insane as the final product. Amazing job.
Thanks Peter!
Can you edit your puppet I to the last Jedi? It looks much more faithful than the one used for that film
That's because I had access to all the original ESB assets and didn't take any artistic license where as the production of The Last Jedi didn't have access to the assets and most of that puppet had to be re-sculpted. In order to get the correct ESB look not only do you have to have access to ALL the original assets, but you have to re-create the internal mech in the same manner as the original.
WOW! Just WOW!
whaaa
When an actual fan does better than the entirety of Disney
just credit the work. add to the positive. not the negative.
@@standoutsteel023 Right! Really talented artists did beautiful work with what they were given access to. Nobody dedicated to working on movies at this level is just some hack.
@@standoutsteel023You know it’s true. Don’t get mad little man

Now.... Can you fix the Last Jedi? I mean, it's got so many problems. But can you fix the Yoda stuff by redoing it? That Yoda puppet looked..............off.
I think what's done is done, but would love to use my yoda in any upcoming official productions!
@@STARWARSICONS Ah, well. One can dream I guess. I just would have loved to see someone fix the versions of Yoda in TPM, and TLJ to look more cohesive. I bet some fan edit projects would love that. It's brilliant work you did. I thought it was the original footage at first. Amazing.
@@DamonCzanik Thanks! Still would be fun to go back to try to recreate some of those prequel scenes with the OT puppet.
This is fantastic! How do you move the mouth? Is it some kind of mouthplate?
Mouth is moved via the right hand as per the original. :)
This is absolutely beautiful work man! I'll be honest when I saw the final result, as a Star Wars fan it made me tear up. This is amazing. You did Stewart Freeborn, Frank Oz, and George Lucas proud!
Thanks so much!! Even though I'm the one who made it, it still gets me in the feels just the same. Awesome to hear others having the same kind of reaction! :)
@@STARWARSICONS I can imagine you'd have an even greater emotional reaction to it than others after all of the love and passion that went into this. Your hard work and dedication really shows. May the Force be with you
How could a fan do a better job than Fox and Disney togheter? I’ve already answered. It’s a FAN
Because movie props are crafted for movie making and the materials used from the original Yoda puppet disintegrated over time. All public information about it was because Lucasfilm went to their archives and people shared that info online.
This is more than amazing!
Thanks for the kind words!
Amazing work !! I think you should film your sequences with an anamorphic lens to replicate the look of Empire
Thanks! The recreation sequences were shot using a low end 4k sony camcorder against backdrops in my living room! lol
Amazing work. "I don't believe it!"
