So so happy someone said this, wrinkles in art are beautiful too, also crucial for expression

They were actually my enemy until I learned how to properly draw them, now they’re my best friend and the nasolabial folds, the two wrinkles at either side of the mouth, are my favorite

Almost all of my characters have wrinkles! The young characters have either eyebags or crinkly smiles and the older (>30y/o) have deep eyebags cuz I feel that makes them look tired (and relatable) or serious 👌 the wrinkles next to the mouth make them look verrry serious, and either wise or cunning

I personally never found myself having this problem, as far as I remember, cause, when I picked up art again after years, I decided to study expressions, so putting winkles to convey emotions is usually the first thing I do 😂 (regardless of often drawing young looking characters, I mostly don't specify ages due to my gerascophobia) cause it's true! wrinkles often don't even mean age but rather the skin folding as the expression changes as they stated in the begging! And I've also seen some older people that literally don't have age wrinkles nor gray hair probably thanks to genetic, so yeah!

Bro I was hired as a character designer and got criticized for putting a single wrinkle on a 6000 year old teacher who is supposed to be “tired” all the time. The director said that wrinkles make her look old and ugly. I was livid already by that comment, then straight up quit with some other artists when the director said that the 16 year old main character needed to be “more attractive”. Pretty much any of my characters over 24 have wrinkles, and even older characters have more, personally the more wrinkles the better! Especially frown lines and crows feet, It’s so cute and shows personality!

For me, animation like that seen in ATSV & Anastasia (<----especially) birthed my love and urge to master smile lines, perspective, etc. That movie's art was the first to introduce to me that young people.. have wrinkles, lol. they elevate art so much in my eyes, never pass up on an artist who does them.

My favorite type of wrinkles are crows feet and ones below the eyes on both sides the nosebridge? If y'all watch Naruto, the feature that Itachì Uchiha has? I'm not sure if they count as wrinkles but it's a good look on people. I love how wrinkles can either make an image funnier or makes an image captivating.

On the past few months I've acknowledged that I needed to better my facial expressions. I realized that I wasn't drowning my character's faces in moisturizer because of age, but because I was scared of them looking "ugly", like, I wanted them to express emotions and look pretty while doing so 😭 Obviously I wanna improve past that issue and I have already recognized that 1) Human expressions sometimes won't be pretty and that is ok, it's just real and I don't need to make my OCs have to look attractive or cute to have nice art; and 2) Sometimes the "imperfections" can make for beautifully natural expressions. Our flaws and "ugly" parts can be endearing too Great video! I will make sure to try and practice that, especially since I'm planning to create a character older than the age range I usually make and adding those wrinkles is just gonna be right.

This is the third or fourth time in the last few days that the glorious YT algorithm has directed me to channels like this. Hiya, and I must say your art is fantastic. *insert cheeky follow* I have a lot of hope that Jayce and Viktor are not dead. I've seen interviews where the showrunners do say that they've been disintegrated and yet they are vague on other characters. But multiple times the wild runes, runestones and Arcane anomalies had a hand in punting people into different dimensions... which is kinda like being disintegrated. Plus the way it is animated literally seems to show them being sucked into it... Basically, I CAN DREAM, HAROLD! Also, it helps that, for all that the showrunners have always said that the story of Arcane was planned out and was never going to be longer, at the end of the day they are a business. A lot of people want the stories of the characters IN ARCANE to continue and I'd honestly be very invested in how the team could explore the topic of "Acceptance" and "Moving On", as in actually reaching those points. Viktor never really accepted his mortality in S1 and corrupted the Hexcore. I doubt Jayce would have moved on from his partner's death, seeing as he was the one to fuse Viktor with the Hexcore to keep him alive. Caitlyn took it way too far in order to get justice for her mother's death, but we were kinda robbed of seeing her journey in accepting that as she literally accepts she was wrong when she sees Vi again and that's it. And as stunning as Jinx sitting in that chair was in S1E9, despite the lessening psychosis, she still didn't truly seem to accept herself throughout S2. Honestly, the closest we got to seeing someone truly accepting and dealing with trauma was S2E7 with Powder seeming to have accepted Vi's death. I'd love to see these characters truly accepting the consequences of and moving on from their actions. I mean, if Viktor lives, the dude has a LOT to unpack. Plus, Jayce, my man... Viktor probably wouldn't have become the Machine Herald if you had just spoken to him, instead of shooting a hole in his chest.

I have been wanting to add wrinkles to my characters but I thought my style was not 'suited' with that kind of detail work because the only times I have really seen wrinkles on expressions have been Arcane and Spider-verse. I never realized that an artstyle similar to mine could work with wrinkles and I feel motivated to try these methods. Again, thank you do much

I freaking love drawing expressions. If I have art block I'll often scroll through Pinterest or similar sites and look for expression photos and go ham. I can draw expressions for hours. Facial design in my characters is very important to me, so expressions are right up my alley! It also helps with consistency when drawing a new OC! Arcane definitely fueled this fire, with how intricately they rigged the character's faces they are so expressive. They literally studied how the facial muscles move and how that affects each micro expression. They are not afraid to make the characters look "unattractive". Like, nobody looks hot when crying in anguish. I recommend ANY artist to study Arcane's character expressions. Whether that be watching the show and taking screenshots or finding some online if you dont have access to the show.

We all started making clean shaven perfect critters then warming up branching out to giving them droopy eyes and smile lines.

I try to give my characters atleast some for when their facial expressions are strained or when their body is bent in a way that wrinkles are required for depth

I really love drawing expressions! Expressions are my bread and butter. Poses are hard af😭😭😭 but if you give me an expression sheet I could be drawing that most of the day okay. Because they’re super fun to do❤❤❤❤ I mean some angles of the face are a real pain in the neck like when the face is looking up or from behind 😭😭😭 but it’s still fun!!

I used to hate drawing wrinkles in my own art- then Arcane season one came out 👁️👁️ Completley changed my perspective. I still need to work on it for sure- thank you so much for the advice!!! I REALLY need to start doing more studies 😅 Also- I cannot wait to hear about your comic! I'm working on a webcomic rn and hoping to start the release in the middle of next year!
