NO DIGITAL? NO PROBLEM! (MAYBE) | 35mm Long Exposures on FILM
มุมมอง 359ปีที่แล้ว
As a landscape photographer sometimes I take simple things for granted: like having a digital camera for example! In this video, after selling my trusty Nikon d850, I travel to Izu Peninsula and challenge myself to shoot long exposures with a 35mm film camera, the Olympus OM-2. After shooting at several different locations and getting my roll of film developed, a surprise awaits. Watch until th...
Shooting long exposures at the beach | LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY on location

It's been a while since I had time to enjoy some landscape photography. In this video I finally find a couple of hours to visit my local beach and shoot some long exposure images of the waves. Life can sometimes "get in the way" of our photography, but that's ok: it makes the time we can spend out there more valuable. Thanks for watching and have a great day! HOW TO SHOOT LONG EXPOSURE PHOTOGRAPHY WITH BORING BLUE SKIES

    I had many of those cheap lenses in the past, and yes, many of those can produce stellar results, in particularly around f/8 or f/11. However, these days I'm mostly using primes. And yes, you can still find a ton of vintage primes for next to nothing...

      Thanks for the comment! I actually prefer some of these lenses to some of the new ones, especially when it comes to focusing. Manual focus on focus-by-wire lenses is a nightmare! 😅

      @@FrancescoLibassi Well, there was a few focus-by-wire lenses in particular from Fujifilm, with unusual clutch design - 14, 16 and 23mm lenses (I do have the 16/1.4), which you can focus almost as good as fully mechanical lens. Unfortunately, it seems that Fuji dropped that design altogether in favour of lenses with faster more precise autofocusing motors...

      Thanks for the comment! For video I normally use the 6 stops: on a sunny day is usually enough to get the the right exposure keeping the proper shutter speed. I also use the 10 stops regularly when I shoot timelapse videos to get the perfect motion blur during the day.

      @@FrancescoLibassi I've been using a variable ND filter as I shoot weddings and the sun can literally go in and out and I like the flexibility. Although I imagine there might be more distortion or colour casts, I've not really noticed it though.

    • @FrancescoLibassi
      @FrancescoLibassi ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, variable ND works great too! Personally I don't have one, I try to use the filters I already have depending on the light. Usually it's good enough, but of course it doesn't give you the same control.

    • @lightninginabottleuk
      @lightninginabottleuk ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrancescoLibassi I'm looking for filters for long exposure photography though, had of course immediately thought 10 stop! and then your video made me think again. Now to decide which brand! I get cold hands so after a holder that's easy to use. And wondering between square and circular, and also a hard grad for seascapes?

    • @FrancescoLibassi
      @FrancescoLibassi ปีที่แล้ว

      I can only speak for myself, but I found that nowadays with modern cameras graduated ND filters are not so useful anymore. For years I have been using the Nisi V5pro Square holder system with a 6-stops, 10-stops and 3-stops soft grad: it works great, but it's very bulky and a pain to carry around. Lately I'm using the K&F magnetic filters which are still very good quality, cost and weight less and I can carry them around easily. If you don't need corner to corner pixel-perfect images at 14mm with no vignette and almost 0% color casts then I'd say circular magnetic filters are more than good enough. At the end of the day it's up to you and your type of photography, but I think it's pretty difficult to find "bad" filters now, they all work pretty well.

  • @rolandofuret2658
    @rolandofuret2658 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, I was wondering about if you would get the shots, because if you review the images when you are loading the film, you can notice that the rewind crank is not moving at the advancing the film. It is a mistake all film shooters must look for careful. Try again it is fun to realise that film is not so easy as digital, yes spray and pray is digital way to be. Film is really based on detail and not so forgiving as digital. Cheers mate

    • @FrancescoLibassi
      @FrancescoLibassi ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the biggest mistake was trying to film all the loading process. I was so worried about shooting the video that I wasn't paying enough attention to the film camera. I could see the frame numbers progressing so I thought everything was fine. Not giving up though! :-)

I have learnt several ways to add gradients recently but the exposure layer seems to work as well as any other I’ve seen. Thanks for the tips, Francesco! My three favorite things are minimalism, black & white, and negative space. I've jotted down these tips and will keep them in mind for my next shoot. Thanks again!

    Cheers Francesco, image one does it for me. d700, Nikon 50mm f1.8 and the 35mm f2, both AI-S lenses are my favourite, e.bay specials. Thinking of up grading to d850, but i may look at the same zoom as yours. Thanks for the vlogs, grazie lol.

      Thanks for the comment! The d700 was my first “real” digital camera, and the 50 1.8 my first prime. Loved both to death and have great memories of using them during my very first trip to Japan! The d850 is technically a huge step up, but it still has the same feeling when you hold it ❤️

    I really enjoy your videos Francesco. Your style, content and the places you visit are always a pleasure to watch. My Tamron 28-70 gets used 90% of the time in my photography.

      Thank you for the kind words! I had my eyes on the Tammy 24-70 for a while but the filter size is 82mm and I didn't want to buy new filters (mine are all 77mm😂)

    It's unfortunate that the sound of the waves/wind are interfering with your video. Great video NTL!!

      You’re absolutely right! Shotgun mic and crowded wavy beach with airplanes don’t go along well. 😅 I still have to find a good solution for audio at the beach and I’m open to suggestions! Thanks for watching 👍
