Magnifique, concert à Stuttgart le 22 octobre.

So many pianists play at Schumann. They don whatever masks seem appropriate - formerly the Florestan of Carnaval prevailed, more recently an introverted and alienated Eusebius has reflected the despair of our time. Magda was different. Her confidence and strength, that found room for the most delicate sensibility, is evident in a 1930s photo with a shrinking Horowitz, and in life affirming performances like this. Find also her Schumann first sonata. What a woman. Thanks as always for sharing.

Pour autant que je sache C.Haskil n’a jamais joué que la D.845 et la D.960 de Schubert. Autant j’ai trouvé ses différentes interprétations de la D.960 passionnantes et même merveilleuses (les “lives”), autant j’ai toujours ressenti son interprétation de la D.845 décevante , disons légèrement hors propos. Tout étant bien sûr relatif.

Not particularly to the point, I know, but reading the Wikipedia entry on RC, I see that his wife and duet partner Gaby was née l’Hôte, a detail of which I was unaware. Was she related to the great Cubist painter and teacher André l’Hôte, a powerful influence on many British artists who studied under him?

Casadesus gives a superbly direct performance, as he does in the Mozart concertos I have always loved and in his solo Ravel set. He gives you the music unalloyed by injections of romantic excess, letting the composer speak without unwanted inflexions from the performer, and his tone here is deep and varied, from a powerful bass to a singing melody line, with clear and musical realisation of all the other details going on in the music. Nothing is lost, the ear is constantly delighted, the forward motion ensures that interest is maintained throughout. The technique is on top of everything all the time - fingers, pedalling, ear, musical intelligence. I'm unable to stop listening to the four ballades. Too good to save for later (although I'll certainly do that too). Hear Casadesus, hear the music.

Thanks, I am always astonished by the quality of her playing. There is intellectual clarity without coldness. Interesting she had Cortot as her teacher.

This new and refreshing approach to this sonata shows how you can avoid any turbidity in Schubert's piano writing. Slow it down at your peril (Richter excepted). I've never heard it played like this before and am thinking that this is genius at work

Are they playing this transposed down a half step? Or was it recorded at a faster speed?

es erscheinen einem hier unglaubliche klangliche abenteuer, kalaidoskopartige, hochsensible, fantasievolle einblicke in die welt, ins universum, ins gesamte leben. wenn man das hier hoert weiss man wieder worum es eigentlich geht im leben. man wird wieder zurechtgerueckt, aufs wesentlich focussiert. leider leider leider brechen die meisten aufnahmen ab. warum bloß??

Undeniably fascinating Bruckner 7th. And make no mistake, it had to be the 7th.

He uses rubato extensively in the Pathetique Sonata. I like his performance of the Beethoven sonatas which are stylistically unique to him.

Certainly the finest interpretation of this symphony!

In my opinion Kempff was the master of the 3.concerto and Fischer of the 4. But Michelangelo in the 5.??? Hm . Not really my taste. My four favorites the Beethoven 5, are Arrau ,Serkin, Fischer and Fleischer . Ups. I off course meant Michelangeli but my telephone have this dammed spelling correction.
