I’m a self taught dot artist. I have been asked by my followers to create some instructional videos on the process it takes for me to create my dot paintings. I will try to give you as much information as I can, while we work on some smaller paintings. If you have a question, feel free to ask, and I will be sure to respond as quickly as I can. My favorite tools include: fluid acrylics (Deco Art Americana, and Golden paints), for making dots I use a stylus, bottom of crochet hooks, tooth picks, and wooden dowels. I like to paint on pretty much anything with a flat surface (rocks, canvas, cardboard, musical instruments, mugs, etc...). Thanks for watching, and please don’t forget to hit “subscribe”.
#9 Time lapse video of dot painting of pet portrait
I've had so many requests as to people wanting to know the process I go through when I paint a dot painting of a pet portrait. So here is a time lapse video, along with some progress photos that I created. However I didn't record myself painting the entire portrait. I decided to add photos instead of videoing the entire painting, because this painting took two weeks to complete.
For pet portraits I like to trace the image onto a canvas to make things easier for myself.
Material used:
10" x 10" canvas
*DecoArt Fluid Acrylic Paints
angle brush, liner brush
stylus dotting tool

I didn't realize the first step didn't record. All I did was take a ruler to help me find the center. Once you find the center, place the compass tip in the center, and draw some circles. So I have question in regards to the circles around the outside. The second row is supposed to be in between two dots, what do you do if you don't have an even number of dots?
Great question!! This will depend on how far I’m into a painting. Sometimes I will wipe off what I painted, and restart. Although I typically just eye where the next dot goes, and just add it. Once the design is finished, it’s really difficult to tell if a dot has been misplaced. I hope that helps.

@@dotartbybrandyyouland4657 Hi Brandy, it’s been a tough 2 years of hospital visits, emergency gallbladder surgery and tons of tests. I just discovered I have costochondritis , inflammation of the cartilage of the sternum and rib cage 😳 apart from that I’m doing ok. How are you doing?
@@louisealain780 oh wow, you’re not going to believe it, but I was also diagnosed with that. I developed it after my lung collapsed. They told me it would improve over time, but I’ve been suffering since 2016. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this.

I think this is beautiful. You are very talented. However it would be really helpful if you could get your camera closer to your work, so we can see what it is your doing. Really hard to see exactly where you are placing those dots (especially the small ones!)

Do you put a varnish on it? Or just let it dry and that’s it?
I apply 2 coats of gloss varnish after it’s dried completely.

A tip before you start recording turn your phone sideways and you will get a fuller pic and won’t have the black on the sides.
