Living the Middle | Digital Nomads on Land & Sea
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 เม.ย. 2017
We are currently digital nomads living between our sailboat & RV while working toward retirement as full-time, bluewater sailors. We're learning and adventuring as much as we can traveling around the southwest US in our RV in the winter and sailing Lake Superior on our 'For Now' boat, Saros in the summer. We also spend as much time as we can in Trés Rios de Osa, Costa Rica, where we are building our after-sailing retirement home. Our goal is to be living on our forever boat by the end of 2025.
Our currently published videos focus on our freshwater adventures in the Apostle Islands and Lake Superior, but soon we'll be sharing our adventures in our RV and Costa Rica.

Isle Royale Moose Encounter! | S2E18
This week we finally share our moose encounter on Isle Royale. It was a trip highlight for us...and we were lucky enough to capture it on video. The full encounter is below, but there is lots more to see in the episode. We do some hiking, prep for our trip and head over to Grand Marais--leaving in the daylight this time (no more running into islands!).
Enjoy the momma and baby moose and make sure to subscribe so you don't miss Steffan fighting with a tree when return to the apostles in the final episode of our 2020 lake crossing adventure.

Sailing to Isle Royale in the Dark 🌙 We Almost Ran Into An Island...Twice! | S2E17
มุมมอง 5243 ปีที่แล้ว
When sailing to Isle Royale in the Dark, my first word of advice is DO NOT DO IT. We should have known better, but our confidence won out over logic. Luckily, it only ended up being a lot of swearing and an interesting story. Let's just say we learned a lot. We hope you enjoy - and make sure to subscribe so you don't miss the mooses that will appear in the next episode of this Isle Royale serie...
Exploring the Raspberry River at Red Cliff Reservation, Mast Climbing & Dinghy Loading | S2E16
มุมมอง 873 ปีที่แล้ว
Our big adventure this week is exploring the Raspberry River at the Red Cliff Reservation via Sam Bell. It's a fun excursion, followed by experimenting with getting Sam Bell from the water to the deck of Saros in preparation for our upcoming 10-day trip across Superior. Steffan also gets the opportunity to climb the Saros' mast for the first time aside from breaking the windex, it all went smoo...
Seasickness, Inverter Testing, Hiking at Madeline Island & Star-Gazing in Presque Bay | S2E15

This week we test out a lower power microwave with our inverter, now that we know a bit more about microwaves input wattage :) We also end up in a roll-y anchorage that gets us both sick. We recover though, and have a beautiful hike around Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island. After our hike, we sail our way over to Presque Bay on Stockton Island for a still, peaceful night with a gorgeous sun...

We start this week off enthusiastic to hit the lake, BUT, a bump in the road in the form of a starter battery sets us back a bit. Once we work through that, we hit the water, heading over to Oak Island to anchor for the night. While anchoring, Kelly learns first hand the importance of pulling the dinghy in before starting the process when the painter ends up around the prop. Steffan saves the d...

This week we get back to sailing (our second time on Saros). Our plans or to head to Michigan Island, but the wind change, changed our plans, so Raspberry Island became our destination. We also tested out our new dinghy - Sam Bell. Having a dinghy is an essential for visiting the islands in the Apostles and our inflatable, Brine dinghy is want we've decided to try - so far so good! New videos posted twice a month. Steffan and I (Kelly) have been planning for our retirement cruising goal of 2025 for awhile now. Originally we planned on just saving up for our 'Forever' boat...but, we wanted to get some sailing under or belt. So, we decided to make the leap and get a 'For Now' boat that's what lead us to Saros. Although we still got a few years left in the cold, seasonal sai...
Mast Installed, Water Heater Fun, Sails On, Test Sail and More! | S2E9

In this episode, Saros gets her mast installed and her sails on. Plus, we take her out for our VERY FIRST SAIL! Along with finally getting out on the lake, we learn even more about our water heater, and get some other boat work done. The more we are on Saros, the more thankful we are for our decision to take these years until we can become full-time live-aboards to do some serious learning. Any...
Boat Supplies Haul (aka What Seasonal Sailors Buy Online in Winter) | S2E8

Seasonal Sailing for us means that for much of the year, our boat is on-the-hard and the water is FROZEN! We happened to buy Saros during prime winter tundra time, which meant we did some shopping while waiting to get aboard. Today we share our haul - time will tell if we needed everything we got, but this is everything we thought we should have for our new adventure. Here are timestamps and li...

This week Saros finally makes it home to our base marina - Pike's Bay Marina in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Due to the covid 19 pandemic, we planned on as few interactions as possible, but still had to stop a couple of time for boat adjustments on the way. And, although we always planned on sleeping on the boat during this two-day adventure, the driver hit a closed hotel related issue he didn't expect...

I have a cat 27 and love it. That one he just looked at is nice. Good luck.
Just re-watched.... loved it the second time even more! Still waiting for responses to my queries, but more importantly, MORE VIDEOS!!
I can't believe I did a google search for "moving sailboat from Racine to Bayfield" and poof! Guess I'll be calling great lakes Boat Transport. Thanks for the video
They did a great job for us...Maybe we'll see you in Bayfield this season!
We always run with master switch in all so both banks charge from alternator. But both banks are same chemistry. Only thing is must remember to switch to house when not motoring
Loving your vids but the audio needs work .. BTW thanks
Thanks! And we appreciate the feedback... we are continuing to evolve audio...we got a better deadcat for the mic, so next seasons videos should be better. We're working on editing end of the season your watching and getting the 2021 vids up, too! Thanks again!
I dug up an email fro when we were looking and I think it was $35,000. You could ask Jarret Henderson (in the comments here)...he actually bought the Catalina we looked at :)
Howdy. I am also looking to get started! Do you happen to recall what the asking price was for the Catalina 320? Thx
Exactly out thinking. Yeah for finding your video 💙
We're still working on perfecting the design. We're hoping to test it on Saros, our for now boat, more thoroughly. Probably won't be able to for another year as we cant be there fulltime yet. It's on the list for more refining over winter though...will share what we do!
OMG, amazing video!! I have so many questions: 1. does Steffan know that you're filming? 2. does Steffan want you to be filming? 3. When Steffan's pants are getting wet, I'd like to know the answers to questions (1) and (2) applied at that moment. 4. At timestamp 3:33, Steffan is observing a skeleton TeePee. Is he (a) impressed? (b)un-impressed (c) bored (d) other? If so, please elaborate 5. at timestamp 9:06, the music got really 'dark'. That was awesome! Can we expect music that suits the mood while we are on your boat? 6. can't wait to come on your boat tomorrow!! also, even though I have all these sarcastic comments, we really did enjoy your video, and will keep watching!! (I did hit SUBSCRIBE! :-D :-D)
It's a French manufactured boat, so it'll say 220v on the water heater, but since you're in North America, you'll have to put a 120v heating element instead.
We ended up keeping the 240v in, despite the fact we realize it's not optimal, it is working...another lesson learned for us! :)
Hey guys im in Thunder Bay. Working on my boat Banjo.
Awesome! We're hoping to make up there this year if they'll let us in!
My youtube channel is sailing banjo. Hopefully you guys make it up here.
We'll let you know if we do, maybe we can meet up...checking out your channel now😀
I love your videos! My sons and I anchored overnight at Rocky on 6/12 on our way From Washburn to Grand Marais. I'm curious. What would you do differently to arrive in the daylight? Maybe leave a few hours later and cross in the dark? We've never been to Isle Royale, but would like to. Looking forward to part two!
Hi Anthony! Thanks for the comment. Hopefully, you got some good info from our screw-up! Yes, we should have left earlier, and possibly started from Cat or Outer to shave some additional time off. The conditions the night before our departure were benign enough that we could have made those alternate anchorages work, despite the holding supposedly not being the best at Cat. As it was we left Rocky before dawn and had to skirt around some nets and South Twin. We could have just as easily done that at midnight and that would have got us there in daylight. We knew it'd be dark, just not "can't see 100ft in front of you" dark. We are hopefully headed to Houghton/Hancock in August and will try to leave from Outer on that 15hr crossing at a more appropriate time of day. Ultimately though, we learned a lot, and that's a big part of why we are doing this. How did you like Grand Marais? We stopped there on the way back.
What sailing experience did you guys have prior to buying this sail boat?
Chartering in the Virgin Islands and Apostles. And we've take ASA classes. Do you have sailboat?
Fishing...lol... been watching alot of sailing channels and living only 2 hrs from lake erie or lake Michigan I've been strongly considering a sailboat... maybe eventually retire on a sailboats much further south.
We hear you on the 'much further south'! 😀 2025 is when we'll be heading to the middle latitudes and warmth...but having some fun here on the great lakes for now.
How long did it take for the Asa and where did you go for it? Is that expensive?
@@neilellinger6157 There are lots of courses and can be taken various ways depending on what the school you go through. I got my 101, 103 and 104 in the BVI through a local school, Steffan got his in White Bear Lake, MN for 101 and at our Marina in Pikes Bay for his 103 & 104--there is no 102 that I know of, btw. Not sure why....Steffan also has 105 & 106. I took 105 on self study but haven't taken the test yet. And we both got our docking certification at Pikes Bay. We go through NorthernBreezesSailing.com, but there are schools all over the country, checkbout asa.com. Costs also vary, my BVI certification cost more then if I'd done it local, but we combined it with vacation 😎 plus, meet lots of fun sailing people at the classes.
How much does a boat like that cost?
We paid $48,000 last week of 2019, pre-pandemic boat craze. :)
Nice Video. That is good to know about inverter ratings. I really have no idea how big of an inverter it would take to run my 700W micro wave or maybe a power tool... I am in Milwaukee, WI on Lake Michigan. It is amazing how far it would be to Bayfield by sailboat.
Thank you! We learned about microwaves and inverters the hard way :) Luckily we have college age kids who love free stuff like microwaves! The distance is crazy....we bought Saros in Racine and thought about sailing her back, but would've taken us too long as we both are still working full-time; so we had her trucked over. We do hope to do some longer adventures this year...episodes we are posting now are from last year. How far have you gone from your home marina?
@@LivingtheMiddle I have solo sailed my S2 8.5 from Milwaukee, WI to Little Current Ontario Canada in the North Chanel of Lake Huron and back in 3 weeks. That was really too long of a trip in 3 weeks. But to sail from Milwaukee or Racine to Bayfield would be much longer trip!
Keep working towards your dream. Cheers!
Love this! A great intro!
Thank you!
UUUGGHHH!!! Those windows! If you can ever get your hands on the right material, I still think that a wood working shop is the best way to get them cut and tree-panned. The router and bandsaw attempt was educational.
hey guys just wondering if you could tell us more details on the battery you just installed. we also own a Jeanneau 34.2, enjoying the videos
Hi Sue! Thank you so much for the question and the feedback!! The battery is a Renogy 200 Ah AGM here is the product link - www.renogy.com/deep-cycle-agm-battery-12-volt-200ah/ It's a big, heavy sealed lead acid unit. It being lead acid makes it super heavy (about 120 lbs), and we should only really expect to get 100 amp hours of usable capacity, but that's realistically enough for us with the kind of cruising we do at the moment. It being AGM & sealed means that there is no water to top-off or risk of leakage/spillage, and it being a single large unit simplifies the wiring and the general complexity. As with the rest of the boat systems we are treating all this as a learning opportunity, trying to start off simple and keep the costs down a bit. Once we transition to full time cruising we'll take the lithium plunge, we expect. How do you like your 34.2? What kind of house battery system are you running? In upcoming episodes we'll cover our solar panel and battery monitoring system, so stay tuned!
@@LivingtheMiddle hi we are pretty happy with our SO we have had her for 5 years now , so far we have done some coastal cruising on the NSW east coast of Australia . plan is next year to take 5 months off work and head north to the Whitsundays . we are running 4 x 85amp batteries at the moment powered by 2 solar panels on the bimini, which works well for us so far. we have a Victron battery monitoring system, which my hubby is obsessed with lol. we dont have a youtube channel but are on Instagram #sailmystere if your interested. cheers and happy sailing
Steffan is also obsessed with Victron and has let me know we will be having not only the battery monitoring system, but also a victron inverter/charger on the forever boat :) Just followed you on insta, gorgeous pics...We are hoping to make out the Australia way, but won't be a few years, we'll live vicariously through your pics for now!
Amazing Trip! Lets do it again soon in the BVI
Awesome video and fab channel 😊👍👍
Thank you!
@@LivingtheMiddle your welcome 👍😊
I have always wanted, but only sailor not sailing .I will sail vicariously. 🌴🌴Aloha
I almost bought a 1994 C320 several years ago. I've owned 5 Catalina boats over the course of about 40 years, but I'm glad I passed on the 1994 C320. I like many things about the 320's design, but the first couple years of production (I think up to about hull #275) had a compartmentalized bilge structure in which many of the stringers did not have limber holes. As a result, water that made its way in (via deck fitting leaks, tank leaks, shaft seal or other sources) could not drain to the bilge pump location. The result is trapped water that stagnates and becomes a mildewed source of nasty odors. This was corrected in later years (1996 onward). Also, the early models had a rather shallow bilge with no real sump. So it was difficult to get most bilgewater pumped out. Also, later years of 320 production typically had Yanmar engines, which I feel is a better option than the Perkins.
Hi Rob. That's great info on the Catalinas! The Jeanneau we ended up purchasing in the end - th-cam.com/video/enrAP0BFN8U/w-d-xo.html - has limber holes, and bilge well, albeit a small one. I'm planning on upgrading the bilge pump system this season. Count me as a Yanmar fan too. I know no engine is perfect, but I do like the marine-from-the-get-go aspect. I understand this means no cheaper tractor parts available a-la Beta Marine, but it still makes me feel a bit better.
That is very helpful. I’ve had 3 Catalinas. Looking at 32s and 34’s. Will adjust my searches up a bit.
If anyone has any advice on these windows, we'd love to hear from you, please share!
Well you have proved it again. Sailing is 80% work and 20% enjoyment. But that 20 % is amazing.
BTW we replaced all of our aluminum framed widows with glue on polycarbonate panels with "dummy" plastic frames for the inside available as a kit from cantilena direct. One down side was that you only get one chance to get it right else .... Well. They did the job though. Don't know if someone makes the kit for your boat but??
@@sherrycoady2491 so true!
@@sherrycoady2491 we coulnt find a kit or replacement windows. We did manage to remove, cleanup and reinstall successfully...itll be in an upcoming episode :)

We're actually from the Twin Cities area, Forest Lake, MN. 2020 was our first year with our boat at Pikes Bay in Bayfied, WI, and we're up there as much as possible as soon as Saros is in the water. Are you on Superior? Thanks for the subscribe!
Living the Middle I don’t know if my last reply went thru. We are in Lake Michigan, Muskegon. We harbor hop all summer and hope to go thru the locks this summer. Are you newbies or experienced?
@@danerlandson5596 we have done some charter sailing, my husband more than me, including some in BVI and Antigua. But, we are still on the newbie side of things, if you watch our videos, that will be quite apparent :) We want to learn as much as possible before we transition to live-aboard in 2025. We also want to head thru the locks some time, not sure if we'll get there this season, but it's on the list :)

OMG! So cool! We liked it a lot, but for us Racine, WI was so much closer for moving...plus, worked out for you :) How are you liking it?
@@LivingtheMiddle Oh I don’t blame you. Cost of moving a boat is expensive. I love the boat. I purchased the boat on June 28th. From that day on it was “Project Overhaul”. The entire boat was thoroughly cleaned, new upholstery through out, new windows, all new lines and sheets, replaced all faucets, all new plumbing fittings, new hot water tank, new batteries, new charger, all new light fixtures, switched everything to LED, added on board heat and air, buffed and polished the hull, all new vinyl stripes and graphics and will be starting the bottom job the first week of January.

The henna they do is not very authentic it is more of an *americanised version of henna designs. You can get better henna done at the Somali malls in Minneapolis and for a more reasonable price, a full hand up to just past the wrist for 5-10 dollars depending if you want one side or two sides of a hand.
Thanks for letting us know...we'll have to check that out...we love henna!
I got henna from festival of nations yesterday and it works pretty good
SpillTheTea of course it’s going to “work” it’s just not as beautiful as the culturally authentic designs and they rip you off for it.
The poor growth is most likely due to light deprivation, once you have it in natural daylight you should see a big difference ;) Overwatering is possible but only as far as the rockwool being oversaturated which will suffocate the roots. Roots outside the rockwool will be in a vertical NFT type environment so its difficult to overwater. If you are getting a lot of evaporation, keep an eye on the nutrient EC/ppm as it may increase (concentrate) and lead to overfert issues which wont help. For the best chance of success, the plants should have a reasonable amount of roots clear of the rockwool before you place them in the vertical system, getting them established is the tricky part but after that its all plain sailing ;)
