Good day, just wondering where you got your seal kit for this, I have a 1971 55 and the same cylinder is leaking, not having any luck finding a seal kit. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Can you tell me where you found parts for it?

If it's a small enough leak, could you stop it by adding some type of a gasket sealer this time? We just bought a 790 and it too has the same problem. Although we have not priced out the parts, I'm sure if they are purchased from JD they will not be cheap. Maybe we'll go to EBay as suggested. Do tractor companies do recalls? This is our first tractor so we don't know much about them. How about having the gasket surface machined down a 0.0001 or so? Too much? Or maybe just keep checking the fluid? That seems cheaper. LOL.

Great video. One suggestion, though. Could hardly make out the audio on the clip. Maybe use a remote (rf style) microphone plugged into your digital camera. Really enjoyed seeing how to repair the beast. I bought a 2003 model 790 back in 2018 with 1000 hours on it. Recently, noticed right front wheel making a noise. So, it is parked in my driveway, awaiting a teardown to see what the damage is. Had plenty of oil in the cavity. May just be due to the hours on the machine. We'll see. Thanks again for the video.

Hello, what transmission oil do you use?

Every 50 hours you are supposed to check that fluid. Just had a seal go on mine. Luckily, I had it on the driveway for a bit filling tires on a trailer and the wife noticed a nice spot of oil on the new blacktop. Now I have to hope I don’t have to wait for parts. I think I’ll do seals on both sides since I’ll have it apart anyway. Just hoping I don’t find surprises like worn gears.

That poor old girl has had the lick. Why don’t you drop a couple quarters and go through it. Those tines were worn out ten years ago. You’d be amazed at the difference new ones will make…the soil will work up better and you’ll be wanting to run it with a tractor instead of that overgrown lawnmower…new tines require more power…but worth it. 5000 series make good tiller tractors, their engines produce so much more torque than yanmar engines do. I’ve had them both. Don’t need a new tractor just one with enough balls to handle the work.

From the smoke and the sound of it I would say that one of the injector nozzles is stuck open. You should take the pump and injectors to a professional diesel fuel system shop and have them rebuilt. Make sure you pay attention to the timing marks on the pump before you take it off the engine. Then, don't turn the engine until after the pump is reinstalled. Also, make sure the valve lash on the engine is set to spec.

Good video but way to much shaking it could make you sick. I just rebuilt my 855 it looks like the same parts. I put sealed bearings on the the bottom of shaft to keep the metal grinding out. we will see how that works out Have fun!

Do you happen to have the John Deere part numbers for the bearing, seal, lock-ring and such?

You forgot it at least I didn't see you put in the oring that goes between the gland and the tiller body that seals the gland and body. Good job though. I got the same problem and it looks like I have the exact same seal and bearing set up.

Fuel runs through the injectors full-time all the time goes from the tank to the filters to heads then to the injectors witch keeps them cool then back to the tank

I didn't see you look down inside to see where the injector contact down there is see if it might be boogered up

It indeed is the runaway emergency shutt off and it was a needed upgrade for the later engines...

NICE brother. Like the setup. One small tip. When you can buy a Mppt charge controller. You will make more power from it and you can set your battery parameters for your setup. This will help them last a lot longer. God Bless

Thank you for the video. Just bought my 770 about 4 months ago and silly me not checking everything. My 770 has suffered a similar fate..but looks like I'm dealing with a chewed up ring and pinion due to the previous owner not keeping up on maintenance and checking fluids.
