The people doing their jobs dont really have the time to react and feel this tragedy
Incredible time in history.. We will never see something like that again.
Ted Turner!!! @ 01:06 I was trying to remember if he still owned CNN then
Excellent behind the scenes video. I've been in this theater several times, a LONG time back! Twice for the Sullivan show, several times for game shows.
More computer s than brain cells here
This was before algorithms
When CNN was CNN.
I worked in newsrooms for over 20 years. This captures the real feeling of breaking news, biggest breaking news in American history at that. Thank you for sharing.
We miss the old CNN….
I was just thinking I bet it is nothing like this now.
This is my brain during a panic attack
Husband, graduate NTSU/BOA-RTF, Denton,Tx., skipped out on interview with Bob Wussler. Love Ted.
Every college kid admires celebrities, business tycoons, politicians and the underworld becoz they have wealth, power and popularity. With maturity, we should get over this exaggeration habit. All are common people. What differentiates us is our level of excellence in our skills. Our real duty in life is to focus on our skill development and self-improvement.
I went to the CNN Center last month, and was amazed at how everything on the 2nd story on up was vacant and quiet, yet witnessed historical moments like this one.
What is this?

That’s my mom
@@aidanmckey9921hope she is ok. Did she tell you something about that day?
The majority of cameras were pointed at the Twin Towers and Pentagon. I rarely see videos of other places in America that recorded what was happening in that moment.
Was that Ted walking around?
Yep
Crazy how for a few months this brought Americans together. Now look at the place.
I dont know how you do it. that is just so much stuff happening at one time
This is intense and fascinating. I would recommend people also watch the video of ABC 7 Bay Area for their coverage of the Loma Prieta earthquake from a near dark newsroom. Everything was done on the fly and they nailed the coverage. Reporters were literally walking up to the anchor and reporting from where they stood.
I remember this day clearly... I was 13 living in LA. It was an eerily silent day because there were no planes. Every channel had the news, every radio station. My father was sent home from work because of a threat. He was working on downtown LA. We were all afraid that the us bank building would be hit. You can feel it in your bones it would be a new world
I’m with everyone else I watched what I thought was everything but this piece is a diamond in the rough. Very well done documenting a historic day! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
1:07 that's Ted Turner on the left there
Google absolutely spies on us. I was lamenting the loss of CNN Center today with a coworker. I was reminding her of how important CNN used to be for Atlanta and how it's just a dying network with no credibility in 2024. Now this video suddenly and randomly shows up in my recommended videos. 😐
guy at 0:44 isn't smart enough to appreciate the foresight
Still the only time in history that CNN has proven to verify it's sources before releasing a story.
They were a legit new source up until the last ten years or so
The person who shot this video was GENIUS!!! Such a unique perspective!
Oh wow, seeing unfiltered newsroom activity like this is rare. To see it on a breaking news day is rarer. But to see it on one of the biggest stories of my lifetime is crazy to me, I didn't think anything like this would exist.
Journalism is HARD. Especially the news!
“Fight over there please” 😂😂😂
Imagine being in that group of people in the control room watching helplessly as both towers fell at multiple different angles at once. Heartbreaking
I wish I never got rid of Ted Turner a long and Ted turn around and see you then it was a lot closer to a real news network but once they moved him out. Nothing more than a joke even Ted Turner doesn't recognize it and then there's a News Network anymore.
Now they are moving back to Techwood
CNN coverage in 09/11 attacks was retransmitted here in Brazil by TV Globo,TV Record and TV Bandeirantes.
26:22 Yep…for months
Interesting, you never stop to think just how they do things behind what we see on TV. Looks like NASA on a moon mission.
"It's got to be a terrorist group. Like the Taliban." Ted Turner knows his stuff
When this happened and for historical purposes, these interactions in the newsroom are captured?
Ted Turner in the house!
This is one of the most gripping and interesting videos I've ever seen in my life.
What are all the people on different computers doing? If they are researching stuff, then why so many? Wouldn't there be so many, they'd just be doing the same thing over and over?
At 19:55 in the video you can see and hear them trying to route video in from the affiliates in the affected markets. I worked at WSLS TV when this happened. Back then CNN had the ability to receive our signal via fiber but they could only dial up one station per market. I’m not sure where it’s at now but in this part or the other, you can see them developing a work-around. Some stations also had their own uplinks through the networks (CBS, NBC, ABC) There’s a point where you see and hear the other stations shot coming in using a different market’s router, probably because they wanted all the possible video from NYC and DC. Almost every local station was also a CNN affiliate. so occasionally you’ll hear “embargo..” followed by a station call sign(s). This happened when you didn’t want your competitors having access to your video across the street using the same CNN network. You’re telling cnn it’s okay to use but they have to embargo whatever stations you mentioned. As the gravity of what was happening reached historic levels most shops probably didn’t worry with it, though.
I, as a mere viewer, explicitly remember anchors on various networks saying that they all agreed to share each other's content without any conflicts that day.
It’s interesting to hear him say, “If I have to shut down Marketsource, I will.” Marketsource was the service they had for affiliates to get live shots on financial news from a reporter at the stock market. It hadn’t quite sunk in yet that all of the markets would be shutting down, and there’d be no need for Marketsource at all for a while.
