Hello 🇨🇦 How much was the truing stand with the base ?
Free! I traded up until I made a deal for it. Brand new, too! 😆
@@hobbybike51 lucky !
its not a fixie if it has breaks
All good! Thanks for the comment and you're not wrong.
Is a fixie not just a bike with a fixed gear? That's what i think, most fixies come with a front break too
@@Demoniczny09 Thanks for the comment! The guy to whom you're replying seems like a true purist! However, I think the designation of fixie has evolved over the years. I've had dudes try to sell me fixies only for them to actually be ghetto single speeds.🤣
Them ring wrench blow 😢😂
Couldn't have said it better myself! Thanks for the comment!
Nice! Now I am searching for a cheap trainer lol. Always wanted to learn truing and wheel building but do not really have to funds for park tool truing stand. Oh new sub from me as well.

It killed me when you put the freewheel on misleading title!

Flip flop bro, flip flop🗣️
“You could get SCAMMED if you don’t know this is here” no, it’s called knowledge. You pay a bike shop for their tools, time, and talent. Tools such as a torque wrench. Talent such as not clamping on the top tube. Also, your barrel adjuster is SUPER far out. You’ve gotta find a new shop. Our shop only sells parts if you actually need them. It’s very uncommon that we replace derailleurs. Front derailleurs are a pain to work with. At least your tire wear point is somewhat accurate. The two holes are different depths. Once the first hole disappears, it’s a sort of warning. Once both are gone, they need replacing.
I have already achieved success doing this because of low talent and knowledge at bike shops (don't forget the fly-by-night garage guys that appeared during COVID), which is why I'm doing youtube😆; you don't do youtube if you're NOT ALREADY successful! I don't use shops, but the owner of this bike did which begs the question: why is that bike on this video? However, I do appreciate that you actually watched the vid and accept your opinions.
I won’t take advice from ANYONE clamping a carbon frame by the top tube and not using a torque wrench. Thats NOT how to work with carbon. Any bike shop worth its salt should have free estimates or free appointment consultations. This isn’t “bike shop scams” this is basic bike maintenance anyone can learn… Not sure what shop you went too/or worked at but this is not the right tone to have with this. Here is an idea. Price shop menus 45-60 min from your house and chose accordingly.
Read the title, bigboss!
You seem to have a really low opinion of bike shops, perhaps you’ve been scammed at some point but I think this is a really unfair way to portray them by suggesting everything is a scam. Many jobs on bikes are quite simple but that doesn’t mean that we should always assume we should do them ourselves because a shop will scam us, at some point even the best home mechanic will more than likely require the services of a good shop. Your point about bolts being undone so far and then done back up the same amount is no excuse for not using a decent torque wrench, it’s just good practice to use the right tools for the job, your way assumes the bolt was at the correct setting to start with which is hugely flawed. Finally what you did with that chain dropping it to the inside of the chainrings onto the paint and turning the cranks….🤦 I’m glad you’re not working on any of my bikes.
I've never been scammed, but others have. I don't assume this, others have proven it. You paying for everyone to have a torque wrench? You should watch the video again, look and listen closely before making assumptions. Thanks for a comment.
@@hobbybike51 bro if you are working on a 1k+ carbon bike, you can afford a $50 torque wrench. Hell they are cheaper than that if you get the preset ones. If you have a carbon bike you should have a torque wrench. Your logic is like this "If I only have a sledge hammer why should I buy a claw hammer to hang a picture?"
@@hobbybike51Whatever the work, you use the right tools.
@@ChiTownBrownie89This clown would use the sledgehammer and tell people to just not hit it as hard.
Sounds like you went to some shady shop.

I appreciate the comment! Keep learning and helping and even more will come!🤜
I lasted 4 minutes in to the video when i saw you not use a torque wrench for the carbon seat post and as already mentioned by others clamping a carbon top tube in a work stand. Please stop doling out bad advice and leave the bicycle maintenance to the professionals.
No explanation either? I'd love to hear why!
Guy needs to look up the word “Scam.” The only Scam is losing 12 minutes of my life watching this garbage. What a 🤡
You watched it all? Thanks bro!
Some good tips. Also watch out for bike shops that don't let you know what you need just go ahead and replace parts on you. Some bike shops will even remove you're high performance parts and put on cheap ones if you aren't careful. I've had fellow Cyclist having these experiences. Even I've had this happen and requested my parts be put back. I try to do as much of my own work on my own bikes because of this. Slowly building my cycling tool set.
Thanks for the additional info to help others out! I've built my array of tools by fixing up bikes I found for free at the curb and resell them cheaply to uni students, young families and so on. 😃
Good tips every bike owner should be aware of. There are so many things the average rider can learn to maintain themselves!
Thanks for the positive response! Yeah, don't let the bike-shop bullies boss you around!💪
Don't forget to PROVE your claims on that top tube clamp gripe, don't just parrot! In the meantime, Check this recent reddit post: www.reddit.com/r/ottawa/comments/1duwhfh/bike_repair/
Holy crap this video is full of absolutely terrible advice. Who call's Aksium wheels "Expensive"? I don't get how any of these are "SCAMS" - bring your bike into a bike shop extremely dirty (which makes it super annoying to work on/fix). No bike shop would re-dish a whole wheel without checking alignment.
Listen to richy rich here😆! It's all the truth. Your listening skills are weak. Watch again, bigboss!
I made it to 8:50, he was checking for chain wear with a 12 inch ruler!
@@Randombourg And?🤷♀
First off, you do not put bike on stand via the top tube.
Why not? Bro science or just parroting?🤣
Bonus for calling that out...First thing I noticed also. If the first move is to clamp my carbon bike in the middle of the top tube, most likely a "scam" tech. 🤡🌎
Why's that? Trust me bro science again?
@@hobbybike51 because its easy to over clamp carbon and crack it. Also you tapping is a myth, lots of carbon repair places do not recommend that as paint can effect it, hell xray is even outdated now.
@@ChiTownBrownie89 Thanks for answering since none of the bullies could🤣! Think about it: that little clamp will crack carbon fiber frame? Really? In comparison with all the stress the stays/joints take? It's just parroting, like lawyer lips. Yeah, fingernail tapping is about all one has though.
It amazes me that it costs more to service a bicycle than it is to service a car.
It literally doesn't.

I have heard about trailing spokes going under instead of over or vice versa is it necessary?
Thanks for the question. Where did you hear/read this? Just so I can see what you're saying in context. Seems like a good video topic🤔!
unsafe
How so? Bro science?🤣
@@hobbybike51your handlebars are held in by threads, which threadless stems are not meant to. They're supposed to be clamping pure and plain metal, theres air gaps in between the stem and the fork so it wont be a tight/reliable seal.

That's great advice and thanks for the comment! It helps everyone! I mentioned testing it out first in the previous video, but not in the sense of a warm up. Well said!👍
Thanks for the video. I agree with everything except for needing to unwind the spring to the lowest torque value everytime you store it. I dont know if you mean storing it for 3-6 months sure it is good advise because of spring memory and such but if you are going to use it the next day it wont really make a big difference.

FREE grease! 👍
Is it right direction? Two of my dicta freewheels open to counter clockwise. Those are ones that have notches for removal tool on other side. One dicta freewheel I have doesn't have notches for removal tool and it opens to clockwise direction.
Thanks for the comment! I was just messing around to see if it would open off the wheel. I salute you for watching this old stuff!
@@hobbybike51 haha, no problem! Just yesterday I disassembled, cleaned and assembled those two dicta freewheels. Single speed ftw ✌️
@@Pianist203 Cool! Did you make a vid of the process? Yeah, this one here the notches were on the opposite side so I couldn't thread it on the hub to hold it in place (i.e. cheap part).
@@hobbybike51Did not. I put removal tool on vice and open freewheel on top of tool. I've made a simple tool which makes it easy to loosen and tighten the ring (plank with two wood screws).
@@Pianist203 Sweet! Thanks for sharing.

I have little experience with torque wrenches but shouldnt you hold the torque wrench at the handle to ensure torquing the bolts to the spec. Like the park tool demonstrates. th-cam.com/video/BPe1-bDFVRM/w-d-xo.html
Interesting. Yet at the end he just tosses it lol!

Appreciate the comment and support! You can blame the TH-cam seed groups (marketers) and editors I've turned down who swipe away and "dislike" as soon as I post anything lol!
Keep the Spokes Sorted if you're going to reuse them, in addition to the drive/nondrive length sorting. Keep in mind which spokes were Inbound vs Outbound spokes. In's vs Outs develop a different bend at the head after being used, and if you mix those up in the new lacing they'll be prone to breaking there.
Great points! Thanks for the constructive contribution!
😮💨
It'll be ok
I got confused as to which one you judged to be best.
Watch again, you WILL get it. If not, thanks for the comment.
i had the same problem on my merida and the mechanic only used a carbon gripper paste. it's been about a year now and i have not had the same problem ever since. watching pro bike builds on youtube as well, i've seen that most of them do the same.
Thanks for sharing! I'm surprised how many people have had this issue. This is the fist time I've ever had or seen this problem.
Thanks for the support, everyone!
i had the same issue... the original plug is too short, it doesn't hold properly.... i tighten too hard until the tube is slightly crack.... my solution is to replace/use a longer plug.... (more holding surface = more secure)
Thanks for sharing!
The knurled plug you removed on the right is totally bone dry. How do you expect the wedges to expand the collets outward against the inside of the steerer tube, and the bolt to turn properly if the threads and everything else are bone dry? When you "tighten" the bolt with the blue Park allen tool, you're trying to overcome the sum of all the friction in the threads, bolt head and expansion wedges. Oh and additional friction caused by accumulated corrosion on the bare metal. It was probably never tight enough to begin with. Another example of how failing to use proper grease at assembly results in problems. I imagine this bike has myriad problems resulting from poor initial assembly. A tale as old as time in the bike industry.
Thanks for sharing and a great take! I'm always learning. Now, there's also the popular belief that grease and carbon don't mix, so how to convince those people otherwise?
@@hobbybike51 There is carbon safe grease out there, Finish Line Premium is one, you can also use carbon grip / anti slip paste on the fork plug as well.
@@mtlbiketech7960 Thanks for sharing!
@@hobbybike51 grease and carbon mix just fine. It's like the crowd that erroneously believes you shouldn't grease crank tapers, some people will never listen or learn.
