Living in Uruguay | Retiring to Old City Montevideo
Pam and Kiernen, a retired couple from Seattle, moved to Uruguay in 2022. They are the first people Guru’Guay ever interviewed who actually DROVE to Uruguay. he couple chose to live in the Old City Montevideo (Ciudad Vieja in Spanish), the capital’s historical neighbourhood.
Everything is within walking distance and both the couple and their lovely dog, Willow, go on daily outings to run errands or discover the city. Pam lived an intense lifestyle as a restaurateur, but found a much more relaxed way of living here in Uruguay. Kiernen says Uruguay offers them great quality of life, especially when it comes to healthcare, for a fraction of the cost it’d have in the US.
As the sixth of a series on Living in Uruguay Pam and Kiernan talk to Karen A Higgs, CEO of @GuruGuay about relocating, what it’s like living in Old City Montevideo, the Uruguay healthcare system and adapting to a slower lifestyle. We talk about their experience, what healthcare costs and how moving here improved their quality of life.
I can’t thank Pam and Kiernen enough for their openness to sharing their experience, so that others may benefit.
*In our rapid fire round, Pam and Kiernen share their immediate thoughts on:*
• Life in Uruguay is…
• The cost of living…
• As smokers…
• Uruguay wine…
• Before I moved here, I wish I had known…
• The biggest difference between my life before and now…
HUGE THANKS to Pam and Kiernen

vegan in Portland here. our friends just moved to Montevideo. she said there's meat everywhere but I'd probably be okay given it's a big city and there are lots of choices.
Enjoy the country!!!
👍🏻 Spot on .. Thanks for sharing ❣️. Uruguayan living in USA but we own a condo in Punta del Este .. getting ready to move back.. and taking the appropriate apparel .. which is wayyy less expensive here. 54 years here. It’s going to be an adjustment but I know deep in my heart that my Soul and the quality of my life will be 💯 times better. ❤❤❤
I'm curious about what neighborhoods you ended up recommending to them.
Wow. This is really good to know. Makes me reconsider going there.
If you go in winter … With the proper clothing (suited for below zero ) and you should be fine. My dad lives there and spends winter months closer to the equator.
Yes😁👍🏼🙌🏖🌊☀️
Wondering if it would be possible to get contact information for your real estate agent, Ignacio? We are hoping to move from the U.S. to Montevideo soon.
Any recommendations on real estate agents/listing sites?
Hello! I am from Uruguay living in US, I am planning to move back to Uruguay but I have two dogs, a Great dane and a mix Pitbull, one too big and the other one is a restricted breed. I was thinking about driving as a possibility. Is there a chance I could get in touch with you guys to ask some questions about the trip, time, cost and safety while driving? Thanks so much!
Hi, my wife and I we’re about to move to Uruguay into the same area, I was born there but I only leave there for 8 years of my life, now we are retired and we going back home to see and experience the country and people, I can wait to be there
Nice people and amazing journey! I would like to ask if some of you know about a good an affordable moving company to transport my belongings from the States to Uruguay? Any suggestion will b highly appreciated. 👍

Well...I guess you have not been to any 15th birthdays party or weddings, because we do dress up for this kind of events, we also dress nicely if you go to some theatres, or certain restaurants, but I think high heels are just mostly for parties, although I know people that wear them all the time just because they are short. The buildings are not poorly built, in the past the construction was different just because the weather was different ,that's why you can see or find central heating in some if not all the new buildings.
This videos are very interesting, that being said I think there is a difference between being lazy, and being laid back. I don't think we are (Uruguayans) lazy but yes I think we are laid back, or chill like the guy says it.Each job is different and have different demands, and of course one of the beauty of Uruguay is exactly the pace of life.I don't think that to do paper work takes more time than in other countries it is not easy to go through a process of residency and it was very fast for this guy because it does take years to get it ,and makes sense of course. Uruguay is expensive depends what you compare to,and people survive quiet well even if they don't work in any of the industries mentioned in the video, ask the many Cubans that live in Uruguay. I guess depends what you are used to.
Uruguayan government MUST remind to those people to not bring any dangerous ideology to Uruguay. They will spoil the country if they bring the theocracy.
Two questions for Pam and Kieran: How did you get around the Darién Gap? And are you refugees, or just retirees, for now?
We consider ourselves to be immigrants as opposed to expats. I think that it is an important distinction and in our minds it says that we are committed to Uruguay and its culture
Hello all, The Pan American Highway is interrupted at the southern Panama border with Columbia. It is impassible to vehicles and a dangerous area to cross on foot. We used a service based in Panama City called The Overland Embassy that will put your vehicle in a container and ship to Cartagena Columbia or many other destinations..There are many videos here on TH-cam that explain the process. Alejandro and his crew are experts at this and handle all of the paperwork logistics. They also provide vehicle repair and maintenance services. We highly recommend as a near painless process
You all seem so lovely 🥺 saludos desde Uruguay 🇺🇾
Houses aee properly insulated in UK?? Hahahahha
Uruguay, for sure in my bucket list!. Thank you!
💯
Very very nice couple. They are welcome in my country. Old city is very kind, as other neigbourhoods. You don´t need to live in Carrasco, Pocitos and other near the sea. In fact, in Ciudad Vieja you can visit everyday the Sarandí escollera. You chose the better healthcare, as La Española. Another time: Welcome to Uruguay!!!
What an awesome couple. Thank you guys for sharing your account and views on Uruguay. We definitely need more people like you in our country. SEAN BIENVENIDOS.
Drive to south america? How'd they get around the darian gap?

Welcome to Uruguay!! But you missed to name your restaurant and the adress!
As an Uruguayan myself I would be surprised of people from certain places (particularly the US) would like to come live down here, specially because the so high cost of living, but then I had the chance to travel to California on September 2024, after 14 years without visiting the US and I was SHOCKED about how expensive everything has become over there. There are certain things that remain more expensive here but in general the cost of living has become even. If you put into this equation that an extremely top-notch health insurance (with no co-pays whatsoever) will cost you around USD 400 down here (and again, I am talking about the most expensive ones you can get, there are far cheaper options with co-pays or around USD20 - 50 for an specialist appointment or X-rays, and that would bring the monthly fixed cost down to USD150 or 200 and still on the premium insurances) then the option becomes more reasonable. I wouldn't live in the Old City though, as I am used to open spaces and living by the beach. I consider the Old city dirty and not very safe but that's up to each one's personal cup of tea. I would totally consider retiring in Punta del Este instead! 90 minutes away from Montevideo it get's crowded just in January and the rest of the year it has all the advantages of a city but remains so peaceful. Cheers to @lauracanepa, we were coworkers!
"Wow, great interview! This was the first video I watched on your channel, and I was really impressed. I obviously binged on some other videos after that. I think the TH-cam algorithm should treat you better- You are amazing. great content!"
Atlantida es hermosa!
Yo he ido a la playa con chaqueta y biquini por debajo 😂
I have never heard of anyone having a bad experience buying a property in Uruguay and there are so many different real state companies, I am surprise they don't trust them, some probably are in the States like Remax, anyway I guess is what you are used to.Anyway, glad you are happy here.
I see similar comments here on this thread so I want to explain my comment. The process of buying is different here compared to USA. I do not think that it is untrustworthy, just different and a bit difficult to navigate without an agent. The first big problem was just finding properties for sale. In the USA, and what I am familiar with, there is a central property listing service that shows all properties currently for sale. Uruguay does not have anything similar so you need to scour advertising sites like Mercado libre. Many of the listings are out dated and no longer for sale. Often there are different agents listing the same property and the price listed can vary in some cases U$S 50.000. Just researching and identifying apartments that we were interested was harder. Things got easier once we began working with an agent. Even then more than half the listing our agent looked at for us were no longer available. The actual sale was straightforward and the process easy and transparent.
@@PKReilly thanks for the clearification, glad you finally found something. There are a lot of properties for sale but I understand that can be very difficult for someone coming for a different country trying to navigate without help, for me the best way to buy and cheaper, at least for something new, is before a building is done, that's something I don't know if it is available in other countries, of course that's if you want to live in an apartment, but if you want a house it is another story. Many people now there are leaving the city, buy a piece of property and live in a container sounds crazy, but they are very affordable and quiet cute, kind of popular right now too. Continue enjoying Uruguay, glad you are here.
Dude is from Pakistan, lived in Russia, now lives in Uruguay, and did this interview in english. I wonder how many languages he knows?
What a great interview. Wish you guys the best while here in UY. The one way comment got me laughing so hard! So true!
that's so great to see this video. I will move to Montevideo soon and I'm brasilian, with the uruguayan cedula already, but the informations you gave here are precious, especially related to real state. Maybe I will look for your agent if you dont mind, and if you could give me this contact... Thanks for the video.

If you are IT trained and you do not mind the slow pace of living it is one of the best countries in the world in my opinion.
Thats good to hear! Cant wait to move there.
TODO cierto 😂 Muy bueno
No es cierto que no sea transparente la compra de yn apto. Ya el hecho que sea necesario la intervencion de un escribano da fe.
I'm also 100 % uruguayan and agree with you another 100 %
Thank you for sharing your experience!
I miss Cosco and target 🎯 I live for two years in Uruguay but not culturally only beaches to windy right now I am in Argentina going to Spain. Good luck guys ❤
uruguayan tech companies have started hiring foreigners because they are less likely to leverage the labor laws. sad.

Thank you 🙏 We think so too! We work really hard to provide realistic useful information. There are so many videos made by people who have really never spent any time here whatsoever. And distressingly they have thousands of views!
