The Boring Country Life
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 ส.ค. 2022
It's boring here and we love it! We put in a good effort anyway to keep it boring, but life has a mind of its own sometimes. Debt free, off the grid, and halfway finished raising kids. We are Xennials ahead of the curve, choosing country life 20+ years ago.
This is mostly a place to share happenings on our homestead and gardening updates (so we can look back and enjoy the memories). Take what inspires you and leave the rest. You are welcome to grab a cup of herbal tea and visit a while before continuing on your own adventure!

Sweet potato fries are good
@@Canning202 Do you have a favorite way to make them or should I google it? I do have a little airfryer.
If you like cooked greens, sweet potato leaves trimmed of the vines are a lovely substitute in any recipe that calls for spinach. (Leaves only as the stems are tough if you don’t peel the outer fibers off them.)
No, we aren't cooked green lovers here. (Maybe one day though.) We prefer greens in salads, smoothies, or baked in dishes.
Look up sweet potato vines as medicine. I have seen that they prevent cancer.
Wow! What a bountiful harvest! What size bed is this and how far apart did you space your slips?
It's apprx 3'x20', might be 3.5'x24'... somewhere in that range. In the first 40 seconds of this video from June you can see what the bed looked like 2-4 weeks after planting. th-cam.com/video/melFli8IunI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-hcnqQzAB4BDv86- 2-3 plantings were whole sweet potatoes with a few slips growing on them. (Those look bigger, bushier.) The rest where single slips. I would say around 2' part. They all get big and grow whereever they want to anyway.
Thank you for the quick response. I don't have as big as a bed as yours. Mine is 3' x 6' but how you've planted have given me a good starting point as how to how I should proceed next season. Thanks again. 😊
@anneciamartin9514 You're welcome!
It’s better to let them “cure” awhile and then they are much better.
It’s a shame they aren’t here as I can and do eat them if I have them every day. There are many ways to cook them but baking is the easiest and tastiest. What a harvest!
I still bake them the way you taught me. :-)
Are you all making your own compost?
Not presently. We could, but we haven't carved out the time to do it. We have everything we need to make it (chicken pen siftings, comfrey, woodchips, tree leaves, etc). It's on the list. For now we purchase mushroom compost from a local farm supply that trucks it in from mushroom growers in PA.
I gotta find cheaper compost!!! It's 49 a yard here. Idk if that's good or bad but I have a ton of bed I moved and need to fill for asap. I have tons of the wood chips to put in the bottom but I need lots and lots of dirt. Your garden is so beautiful. Definitely inspiring and especially since I know a TH-camr now. Hehe
Ours was between $35-38 a yard last time I checked. We work that cost into our annual budget knowing we will have many yards delivered in spring and fall. Try looking for rural, locally owned farm supply. We found our place by word of mouth, otherwise we would have never known they existed.
How do you prepare sweet potatoes? I'd love to try several new recipes this winter.
I don’t love baked sweet potatoes, but I love to chop them up and roast them with carrots, salt, pepper and olive oil.
@@alamryfarms754 How long and what temp do you roast them at? Or just until browned on outside?
@@Boringcountrylife well, I would say 400° for maybe 20 min and go from there.
I love the brick. It's giving me more ideas! Hi Jessica, it's Jessica. We met at family camp!! 🤗
Hello again!
We share this granny hobby!!! I love cross stitching. Right now I'm working on a few projects, one Baba Yaga themed for myself and a set of four miniature "halloween" themed for my Etsy shop. I also make miniatures, and crochet, and bake...garden...chickens...and I've even been known to blacksmith...
So much to do and enjoy, so little time. I need to force myself to work on some small xstitch projects. I don't do well having multiple projects going at once though. I'm a compulsive finisher (with somethings). ;-) How many injuries have you gotten while blacksmithing?
@@Boringcountrylife Lol, zero injuries as of this moment, let's hope that trend continues.
My husband has been researching vans to turn into campers. We are empty nesters now and it would be great to be able to go see the U.S. and have the comforts of home-ish rather than hotel rooms with questionable cleanliness. The awning looks like it works well, you'll know for sure after you test drive it a few times.
I'd like to avoid hotels forever, but sometimes we have to accept the punishment. Enjoy the alone travel! We are looking forward to that time, though we will miss the littles.
You should do another tour when you have it set up for camping :)
I hope to remember and make time for it.
It totally works!
Those look wonderful!
@@OurRetireEarlyJourney Peak season is a short, busy window, but fun to remember. I'll be watching again in January/February. 😁
Love the beauty of zinnias!
Thank you for your effort and looks very delicious aside being so healthy!
We also use these gluten slices along with stuffing and gravy for holiday meals. Let me know how this recipe turns out for you!
Wow!!!! That is amazing and beautiful!! I have cross stitched for years and have never done a full coverage.
They are my favorite thing to stitch now. Beautiful pictures with zero back-stitching. The hardest part is finding a picture that I like enough to commit 8-18 months too.
@@Boringcountrylife yes, it is a big commitment.
What diet changes have you made that have been a blessing for you?
That is so cool!!

Hi I just found your channel today. Enjoyed it very much. Just wanted to know your reason for avoiding canola. Thanks
I prefer to limit my oils to keep omega-6 and omega-3 ratios in check. Less oxidative stress means feeling better so I stick to olive, coconut, and avocado oil. I also believe the reports that canolia oil is a byproduct that Canada needed to find an outlet for once it wasn't needed to oil war machines. I don't believe it's possible to completely avoid seed oils in modern times, but I do what's in my power.
Why are you avoiding canola oil
Do some research on seed oils, highly processed oils…the way they’re manufactured is terrible for us. I didn’t know this until recently! I feel so much better now that I’ve swapped the bad oils for the good ones (GOOD oils being beef tallow, real butter, avocado oil, coconut oil, olive oil…:)
I dig those stone raised beds. Might try something similar this fall.

Hi, great video! I was surprised to hear you say, "December 1st", after you twisted that beautiful Bonnie ripe tomatoe off the vine! So, I reminded the video and I thought, Wow! If an individual can grow tomatoes during the Winter in a good greenhouse like the commercialize folks, "go for it and do it! Thanks for the information!
Yes, I think I started the plants in early summer. It was a nice treat having fresh tomatoes at home so late in the year.
You have a beautiful garden. This is our first year. And I love the walled garden and beds in the middle. Great job. I noticed you don't have a lot of mulch? Do you use anything? It looks like a labor of love. I'm in Louisiana and by 9am-6pm it's almost unbearable outside. I can't wait til fall 😅 How long did it take you to build
Thank you, definitely a labor of love. We switched to using mushroom compost bc it is a mulch as well as a growing medium. If youtube doesn't let this link show up below you can look back a little over a year, maybe 18 months ago. I did a 14 minute slideshow on how our garden has changed since 2014 and the wall construction.

Adorable pup!!!
Beautiful garden Jess. Saved me a trip to see it. Though I should have harvested that chamomile too since you didn’t. If I am the flower friend those flowers that you could not identify are…. An old time favorite. The only ones my grandmother 75 years ago grew and they are called Four O’Clocks. They come in pinks, yellows, whites and reds. I have some growing. Awesome garden as always. A lot of work for the family that’s paying off beautifully.❤
Thank you! I kept meaning to send you the video so you could tell me what they are. I so appreciate your wealth of knowledge.
Beautiful!!!
Love the birds!!!!
Love this!!! The ASMR is awesome and love the garden look!
Your garden is BEAUTIFUL!!!! . I share the same love of gardening and country life. I love that you say “boring” lol. The amount of work that goes into growing and preparing your own food is never ending. I know what you meant though I think. Loving the land, growing your own food and slow life with no drama. That’s my kind of living.
And not to mention the Love for God!! That’s the most important
Thank you for sharing your sweet thoughts. We definitely value calm and boring... but you're right, we are never bored. After plenty of drama and pressure for 3 decades we decided to work toward peaceful. It's nice to finally enjoy some fruits from that labor. (Even though we believe it is temporary, a calm before the storm.) Blessings to you!
Such a gorgeous garden! I love the wall bed of flowers!
Me too! Glad I tried it this year and I hope to do that again. The youngest princess loves to collect flowers for her room from there.
Life goals... beautiful yard & I love the bare feet
Thank you! We redesigned the garden so we could have soft walkways for bare feet. Much nicer than woodchips. :-)
First time here beautiful garden. ❤
Hello, nice to meet you! And thank you, May is the garden's prettiest month.
Hello! So glad I stumbled upon your channel this morning. Your garden is beautiful. Love your pretty and sturdy wall gardens. What is your grow zone? New friend. 😉
Thanks and nice to meet you! May is the garden's prettiest month for sure. I'm in zone 7a in Virginia.
Where did you purchase your mullein seeds? I want to purchase some in Virginia but I cannot find a place that sell the plant.
It's been a few years, but the usual places I buy herb seeds are Strictly Medicinal Seeds, Baker Creek, or MI Gardener.
I really needed this encouragement. As a single mother I dream and pray for a house one day. Financially I know I cannot afford a house but God is great. I know God always provides. God surely has blessed your family. May God continue to bless you and your family. Thank you for your testimony to encourage people like myself. ❤
The answer is yes! You will definitely have a city home and a country home in the new earth and there won't be any bank loans involved. ;-) Enjoy each day of your journey here. Life is precious and so are you.
After deliberating, we decided this is a Great Spangled Fritillary.
New subscriber here. Your garden is beautiful!
Thank you. The strong winds last night did a number on a few plants.
Haha. When you 1st started the video I felt like I was in a jungle to 🙂Loved your message and it's so true, that you rest in the Lord. Do all you can do with what you have. This coming from one that lives with daily physical challenges. When you spoke about the Sabbath, I smiled because I was shown a few years ago, that the Sabbath is everyday, so I should listen to my body on whatever day, and rest when it is needed. Not out of laziness but out of necessity because the Lord knows our hearts.
Physical challenges really force us to slow down, refocus, and realize where our support structure comes from. I'm glad you have learned the art of self-care. I do still vary my labor and limit my work when my body or mind is tired (learning to listen better to my monthly hormone cycle also). However as a faithful Bible student I also remember the weekly Sabbath that God's children lovingly honor & obey, even when it contradicts the human plans we may feel like we need to accomplish. The command reads to work for 6 days and rest on the 7th. That doesnt mean we can't also take other recreation or vacation days, but it does mean a weekly stepping out in an act of faith to rest from work of worldly gains and remeber that it is God who truly provides all of our needs. Just like it can be easy, as a gardener, to take credit or bear the responsibility for a bountiful harvest... any human can start to attribute their gains/wealth/position to their own selves. We do have a part to play, but all credit goes to the Creator God who not only makes the seed to sprout and the rain to fall, but also give us a heart beat, breath, and ability to earn our bread. The weekly Sabbath is a necessary reminder to have faith in the One who actually provides and sustains us all. If I were to consider every day a literal Sabbath then that would contradict half of the commandment to labor for 6 days. I agree, mentally one should always be resting in the promises of God, walking by faith, as well as ready to obey his advice about caring for our individual human needs or weaknesses. Yet, I see the Creator carved out a special weekly anniversary to celebrate his creation work as well as what he is doing to redeem us. I am married to my husband 365 days of the year, but we only celebrate anniversaries on specific days. That doesn't make our love less special or important the other days of the year.
You must put a lot of work into your garden, looks amazing!
Thank you! It's a family affair. It would be really hard work for one person alone. I'm already picturing that when the kids are grown and gone a lot of the garden may be for flowers. It is a hobby/lifestyle that my husband and I prioritize though.
wow your garden looks great
Thanks, it's always the most alive and lush in May and June.
