Yugioh Villains Were Unhinged (and I love them)
I really need to stop making videos about old anime, it looks so bad when you stretch a 4:3 clip out to 16:9. And yes Yugioh is old, you're old.

    it also deppends on what series you are watching, such as the series Gochiusa, both manga and anime are too good. visuals in both adaptations both Anime and original manga adaptations are equal in stunning visuals, and characters, and too many instantly likeable characters that thrive with the series too well.

    The main thing I miss (especially in romance anime) is that random side story that [instead of using exposition] ties into the themes of the show or foreshadow plot points in really strange ways like the picture book in Chobits, Chihiro's story she writes in ef: A Tale of Memories, the play/Illusionary world or even Kotomi referencing The Dandelion Girl in Clannad. Last anime I can of with something like this was the supernatural element in The Duke of Death and His Maid but even then it was lesser. Also why I love visual novels, something like Song of Saya or Wonderful Everyday would be wild to have an anime of now and even more recent VNs like Amazing Grace or Aoi Tori have that weirdness in them cause they have no restrictions at all - want to make a game about catgirls in a cafe that's mostly pron and then go and make an extremely gory historical setting horror VN? Go ahead. Old harems, even shitty ones also have this weird charm that makes me enjoy the anime cause by all means C³ is not a good anime but I enjoyed it. ATRI -My Dear Moments- is currently suffering from that slow burn (cause VN adaptation) but as someone who's read the VN the 1st plot twist that happens kept me reading throughout the whole second half without ever putting it down, scared that (depending on how they adapt it) this will also happen to Summer Pockets

On another note, Noir and Requiem for the Phantom are brilliant shows from the early 2000s that have that same kind of feeling that you just don't get anymore. I remember jumping inn on my dad rewatching breaking bad and i watched like from half of season one to season two. I stopped wanting to watch the show when Walter killed Jane. I was just tired of here there shit. I then watched the first episode of The Sopranos with my dad. And i fucking loved Tony. it all felt like breath of fresh air. Sure he pummeled a guy in the face with his foot repeatedly, but he felt sad about some ducks in his pool being gone. Tony might be a worst human being then Walter, but i like Tony more. He has his light sides that your hoping for to take over (they never do). Also I feel Slice of Life is more Vibe and character then plot. One slice of Life i really liked was "Super Cub". Its a story about a loner girl who gets a super cub scoter and starts to feel more free and that life has a purpose.

I could buy a box set of Now and Then, Here and There for 5 bucks at Walmart. Or the whole set of Heat guy J for ten bucks (and I did). i think the problem here is not that modern anime isnt delivering on the same level of experimentation as 20+ years ago, but rather in conversations like these we are often pitching the last 3 months or year of anime against 10-30 years of history with cherry picked examples. anime like serial experiments lain and texhnolyze were outliers at the time they were released just like how sonny boy and wonder egg priority are outliers now. and in the examples of those aforementioned series, lain and texhnolyze aired 5 years apart of each other whereas wonder egg priority and sonny boy both aired in the same year. when looking at things from that lens, you realized how fundamentally flawed and biased this argument is.

    • @PointyBoi
      @PointyBoi หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fair point, as time goes on more mediocre things get buried and only the good gets remembered. However, even if it is a flawed and biased point of view based on romanticising the past or whatever, I still feel older anime was more open to experimentation.

    This is something that's been on my mind for quite some time. People have stopped experimenting and taking risks. It's sad to see a medium that pulled me in with its creativity is now just pretty pictures. I think Sarazanmai and Hoshiai no Sora also fit the experimental categories. The latter is not exactly surreal, weird or avant-garde, but it was experimental with its techniques, and felt quite fresh. Sonny Boy was great too. It just gave us a bunch of information, and didn't connect anything for us. It felt like the creators trusted me to figure shit out, and it was a great feeling. I have never tried Wonder Egg. Should I? If it's avant-garde and experimental, I don't even care if the end feels unfinished.

    I think we aren't living on the same planet and time; I've seen a lot of anime without any plot coming out in the last couple of years and most of good ones are 2nd and 3rd seasons of really popular anime (and some of the 2nd seasons weren't even good). Also some had not even bad animations, but they just didn't move or do anything for most of the time... Of course almost all are copies of older anime, that's common, but majority of these copies are just bad at everything or almost everything... And sometimes low budget anime are sadly better than others made by big studios with a lot of founds...

    You bring up some interesting thoughts! I feel like even the more concrete anime in the past tended to have some level of abstract elements a lot of the time. The example that comes to mind for me would be Kanon--you get a concrete plot that's mostly explained/strongly implied, but then it comes with certain side aspects of its story that are left very ambiguous and abstract.

    I've been watching OVAs from the 80s and 90s (which boomer anime fans/veterans refer to as the golden age of anime) lately especially those of original ones. Back in the 80s Japan was booming and during this time period a lot of money were poured into experimental projects thus give birth to the first OVAs (direct-to-video). Some of these were adaptations of existing IPs but the original ones are the ones that took the most risks. Many experimental concepts were made as OVAs. I guess that the lost decade had made studios these days to be more budget minded especially smaller ones.

    Theirs definitely a lot of experimental manga out their possibly more experimental mangas out now than anime’s but real experimental stuff uses its medium well. Evangelion has minute long scenes in elevators and that doesn’t translate to manga. Same thing with panel fuckery page turning or junji itos art style. Translating an experimental manga is difficult cause it probably wasn’t made with the direct anime directing in mind. Making a full blown experimental new no ip attached show is a huge gamble no one wants to risk when the same carbon copy iseki 5x is making a billion dollars. I think weird anime will happen as long as -Dooley are buying and people caught wonder egg priority hard but it’s a big gamble comparitivly so studios will gamble less and less

    The dispute over whether or not Visual novels count as Video Games is only in the West, Japan doesn't even use the term Visual Novel that way, they are called Bishoujo Games. And anyone who thinks there is no meaningful Gaming to them hasn't tried to get the Threesome Ending of School Days Blind. Yeah I wasn’t trying to diss visuals as games, I just kind of meant as the story is mostly told through text and not exploration or other gameplay aspects, it’s way more straight forward to adapt it to anime by just picking one of the paths. I think the problem is that modern anime adheres so strictly to some set of parameters that it has lost a lot of what made it entertaining to begin with. It isn't JUST avant garde type shows that have vanished, but its definitely a big part of it. "You can't write a story like this, you can't include these elements, you need to draw the characters in this way, you need to animate them like this," etc. Older anime didn't feel like this really, it felt like just a project that was for the most part created with the heart of the people working on it and graded on how much the audience enjoyed it. But now it feels more like they are doing an assignment and that there is some correct box for them to check to ace it. It feels less like it was made for the audience and more like it was made to satisfy a checklist. It was really hard to explain, but that is how I feel about a lot of modern anime.

    I think the main reason is that most anime today is made by otakus for otakus, in a weird feedback. Back then people who worked in animation also had something to do with live action, commercials, literature and even politics and education. I totally agree on the 'modern anime takes our hand and leads us gently through the plot' part. It's one of my biggest pet peeves in anime where they interrupt the flow to dump exposition on us viewers and explain eeeevery single thing that's happening, like they don't trust us to be smart enough to use our cognitive abilities to analyze and interpret. I remember that was the biggest shortcoming of JJK S1 for me. Take for example, Yuji & Todo's fight against Hanami when Todo was using his clapping technique. There was one moment when the opponent thought she got the gist and was preparing for Todo's next clapping technique, however Todo tricked her and clapped normally, taking Hanami by surprise. I thought 'How genius of him!', then he started talking. "You see, even if I clapped this time I didn't actually use my technique-..." OH MY GOD, SHUT. UP. We got it! We are not the idiots we think you are!
