Sharing my love of everything cross stitch.
FlossTube #15 - FlossTuber for a Day. Grab your stitching and visit with my great friend Dawn.
Dawn has been stitching for quite a while. She shares with us her incredible stitching journey that started with crochet and surface embroidery. She moved to cross stitch with a very large first project, stitched for Sulgrave Manor and was a DMC Mentor. Dawn shows us some amazing FFO's, WIPS, plans and one of her (recently acquired) unicorn patterns. You will love her story about stitching all of the samplers from Hands Across the Sea Samplers - Letters from Europe - Red Box. Get comfortable, grab your stitching and come visit with us.

It was great to meet you today at the Grand ❤❤
@@victorialoftis8246 Great to meet you, too. I hope you’ll join us!!! My email is paisleystitcher@gmail.com. If you send me your email, I’ll add you to our group’s email chain.
Very interesting , thank you.
Another great interview. Its so fun hearing these stories. People are humble and you just don't realize the depth of knowledge and skill of many in the community. I've met Maureen at Needlework Galleria. Her room with all her tiny models is amazing. And I was going to mention Celebration of Needlework, but I don't know that they are hosting an event next year.
This, as always, was fabulous. I enjoyed seeing Kathy’s projects in all the stitching forms. Thank you, Grace, for putting these together. Kathy, you are brilliant. ❤️
I have not watched many Flosstubes during gardening season but yours is always top of my list. So fascinating hearing about the founding of Crescent Colorworks and all the business details. ❤
Thank you Kathy and Grace....these flosstubers for a day a fabulous!! Kathy you are very much the prolific stitcher....I give you a BLUE RIBBON on all of your finishes!! We also share the same initials..OLD - Karen Lee Davis( Macon)my married name!!😊. HAPPY STITCHING TODAY AND EVERYDAY IN 2024!!
This was very, very fun. I hate it that I also missed meeting Barrie at the QCSG event in May! But I'll be in Swindon next year, so maybe I'll get the chance. But all of the chat and info, and the projects that you are working on, Barrie, and those that the two of you are working on - absolutely stunning. Thanks for this series, Grace. A brilliant idea and O so fun.
As I’m living (again after 35years overseas) in Dresden - Germany, I like to add to your saxony sampler info (I too have written to Scarlett letter about it and the posted this in their info) …about the church: „Maria on the Water“ Maria am Wasser is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the Hosterwitz district of Dresden. With its exterior, which is reminiscent of southern German Baroque sacred buildings, it is completely atypical for the Dresden region. At 1,500 square meters, the churchyard is one of the smallest cemeteries in the city. The Maria am Wasser church and the churchyard are listed buildings and were part of the Dresden Elbe Valley cultural landscape as a UNESCO World Heritage Site from 2004 to 2009.
Late answer but Yes - I’ve lost my stitching bug a few times (also due to mistakes or dislikes of fabric-choice and so on) ….usually I do a small for near instant gratification in these „events“ 😂 and so far it has always motivated me enough afterwards 😇💕
Oh you crack me up (sorry, I’m watching your flosstubes backwards 🤭🤪). Yes, stitched the Geese (proudly on green 14ct Aida !!!! - a rare find in rural Canada back in the days 😅), the Bears …there was a Brand, I can’t remember but they were the Rave 😎 and most Designs included a lot of backstitching too. Alma Lynn had them amazing Bunnies and I even bought plain colored jersey-dresses on Landsend for my then Toddler Daughter and embroidered Piggies, Frogs and Jeremyma Puddleduck on them (which I’ve all saved and still have 🤭 - my daughter is 28!) Great to be obsessed with Stitching 😇🤣
Would love to get info on stitch group that meets at store in San marcos
I have heard about these Flosstubers for a Day videos and decided this evening to come over and watch one. Very interesting - what a creative idea! BTW I was also at the Nicola Parkman event with the Queen City Sampler Guild, what a fun and fascinating time that was, right? I wish I had met you there. Maybe at some future event we'll have the chance to meet, Grace.
Dawn is so talented. Thank you Grace, so enjoying this series.
Thank you so much Justine! I’m so happy that my stitching madness was able to provide joy to others!
Oh how amazing to hear these Stories and yes, I too find that many things/techniques and even Designs are having comebacks from beeing very popular in the 90’s. Thanks for another awesome episode and Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪🤗🫶
@@ankahartung2000 Thank you!!!
Wow I did a Biochemistry & Microbiology degree also, but in Australia.
Wished I lived closer - you just have the coolest friends and this was another great video. I loved hearing about the evolution of CC - Her parents discussing her decisions at 40 😂., hysterical. I’m just a boring accountant; this string thing sounds so much better. Although, I would have been freaking out over delivering big orders in the beginning. Just super cool to hear about. Thanks!!
Loved this - I already followed Mary, but I am now a big fan. Thanks!!❤
Loved this! Now, I’m thinking about how I store my linen! 😳
Loved this - you should definitely do again!!
Oh my goodness, what a phenomenal video. Kathy’s skill and enthusiasm were inspiring. Thank for taking the time to put these videos together❤
Hello Grace & Dawn - what a wonderful afternoon spent with you!! I was spellbound by Dawn's stitching journey and the vast array of her beautiful finishes! I love that it took 10 years for some of them to get finally done - which is very motivating and inspiring! I wonder whether Erica Michael's teaches stitching on 40 count silk gauze which her berries are kitted up on - I loved stitching the Honey berry on that with continental stitch over 1 :)
Thank you! Definitely keep stitching on those old WIPs - they eventually get finished, and they will be full of memories.
Wonderful....thanks so much <3 <3
Those frames! I would love to see them come back! I love them!!!
Fabulous interview with Sharon! I had no idea about the background story of Crescent Colours! Your Flosstube rocks!
❤❤❤❤❤
Kathy Decker is amazing. I am so glad you had her as a guest. Can you convince her to flosstube?
I’ve just finished watching Grace’s wonderful interview with Dawn whilst stitching in the garden and not only did it feel like stitching with friends but I am in awe of your talent (and Greg’s Dawn!) What an amazing stitching journey you’ve been on. I loved everything you’ve done and laughed out loud when I saw your first 40 count linen project!!! You are an inspiration and if I had seen this before we met at sampler symposium I would’ve been far too shy to talk to you and the equally talented Kathy! Grace is a born interviewer of the best kind - keeping the conversation moving but letting the guest take the spotlight. Thank you so much for having this amazing idea of stitcher for a day Grace and I really hope that someone will interview you one day as well! Can’t wait to see you both at summer school. Sxxx
Oh Sarah! I am so thrilled that you watched and had a good time!! Thank you for your lovely comments. ❤ Gosh, am I glad that you called out, offering a seat to me with you and Kathy at Symposium! I’m just another stitcher, making x’s….. Kathy is indeed very talented, and I can’t wait to hear more about your stitching journey - methinks you are an impressive stitcher! I like your idea of Grace being interviewed ……. Can’t wait to see you at Summer School XOXOXOOX
Fabulous!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Hi Grace and Dawn, Such a wonderful video. Dawn I started cross stitch in 1985 and attended Spirit of Cross Stitch in the Philadelphia area at King of Prussia. I took an excellent class by Suzanne Miller doing a book of specialty stitch much like what Nicola is doing now. Love Maureen Appleton. I have her Friendship Sampler. Grace, Erika Michaels has kits of silk gauze projects and some of her classes are in silk gauze. I do feel specialty stitches, and eventually Hardanger, are on the resurgence. The Drawn Thread and Victoria Sampler are the leaders in the 90s craze of specialty stitches. I took a Spirit of Cross Stitch Class with Linda Driskell and another with Rae Iverson. Wish you both stitchy time and enjoyment. Hugs and Friendship, Teresa ❤
Thanks Teresa! Those Spirit of Cross Stitch Festivals were a lot of fun, weren’t they?!?! It has been a fun journey, and even more fun now that specialty stitches are making a comeback!
Does Kathy ever sleep? She gets so much stitching done….😂❤ Pickled beets are the bomb! My husband hates them so I figure more for me. 😊 Thanks for the amazing show and tell Ladies!
Grace I Don't know how you do it but everyone of your videos have been fantastic!. I wish I lived next door. Thank you so much. It's been amazing ❤Have a great week
Grace truly is an amazing person, and I am grateful to be living in her city! Hope you have had a great week too.
This brought back memories of attending Spirit of Cross Stitch in Sacramento. I too have several projects from classes with The Heart's Content over 1 and on silk gauze ❤ I've done stumpwork as well and in addition to Sharon Cohen I highly recommend Jane Nicholas and her fabulous detailed books!! I was fortunate to be able to take some in person classes from Jane ❤ and her work is amazing! Love this series with all these great stitchers - thank you!!
Hi Melissa! Wow - we might have been in some of the same classes. Cool. Thanks for the information about Jane Nicholas - I will check out her work!
Grace, thank you for introducing us to your stitching friends! This video was a walk down memory lane for me, too. I was amazed to see that crewel work turtle. I also stitched it many, many years ago. It sat in a drawer until a few years ago when my daughter found it and made it into a pillow. I also went to Spirit of Cross Stitch shows in Des Moine and took classes from Maureen Appleton and Sharon Cohen, among others. Thank you for sharing your journey Dawn!!
Oh my goodness! I love my turtle and am so pleased that you have one, too. I wish I had gone to all the cities that Spirit of Cross Stitch was held. So cool to be connected with you by this festival.
I loved seeing this video! So good to see both of you. So cool to have meet yall at the same time y’all meet each other.
Thank you Grace for sharing Dawn with us. Thank you Dawn, you have some fantastic projects Marilyn
Thank you Marilyn ☺ We had a lot of fun together
Thank you for watching Marilyn!!!
Seriously just so thirty min a day on that oldest Wip! It’s so pretty
Stitching on silk gauze is/was called petit point when I first did it in the 80’s. There was a petit point store in Bozeman owned by a woman named Glyda. I’m looking for my class notes tonight. It is simply stitching over one using a tent or half cross stitch using the general principles you think of when stitching over one on linen. Except it is easier on silk gauze. The hard part is finding the gauze. I’ll share what I can from my notes when I find them.
Thank you for sharing info from your notes! I have another project kitted up to start that is on silk gauze. I saw Cricket Collection’s Walk In The Woods stitched on silk gauze at Threadneedle in Washington and I was smitten! Oh, to have two more pairs of arms and eyes so I can still 2 more projects at the same time!
Thank you. Nicola just showed a multiplication sampler on her floss tube.
I saw it, and love it! I may have another multiplication table sampler in my future!
@@dawnreser4642 Dawn, your stitching is beautiful!
@@carollorion5130 Thank you Carol ❤
What a wonderful episode again. Such fabulous stitching and so diverse - I keep saying ‘wow’ and ‘where do I get that from?’. Thanks again Grace. And Dawn - you need to do your own flosstubes ps love your laugh! Xxx
Thank you Stephanie! You’ve made my day!☺
Thank you Stephanie!!!!
Thank you Grace for another wonderful ‘flosstube for a day’ xx
Thank you Stephanie!
Please do frames Sharon xxx
Cream puff is such a great name! Xx
I love, love love flosstuber for a day! It’s wonderful to see what your very accomplished friends have stitched and are stitching. I really enjoyed Dawn and her amazing work. I searched for the Eileen Bennet multiplication table sampler and found a copy. Now to hunt for the darning sampler by Mary canby, that one tugged at my heart. Thank you so much Grace and Dawn, it’s been a very happy day watching you both ❤
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment, Chris! I am thrilled that you found Eileen Bennett’s multiplication table sampler chart. It was a wonderful stitch! I hope you find Mary Canby too - I can look on the pattern for more info if you need more info to find it. Thanks for making my day!
Hello Fellow San Diegans! Have you found a place to hang out? When I restarted Cross Stitching , there were 4 or 5 LNS but I was into Needlepoint and there were 4 of those. Now there’s only 1 the NeedleNook In La Jolla. I still do Needlepoint but this shop has so many of the threads we use for Cross Stitch, too. So I go there to buy my floss. On silk gauze, Erica Michaels has charts for silk guaze specially her berries. I think KittenStitcher had a demo on one of her videos.
Hi Athena! Yay a fellow SD stitcher!! We have a meet up the third Saturday of every month at Grand Country Quilts in San Marcos from 10am to 3pm. We meet in the modern store and she is beginning g to carry cross stitch!!! Please join us at the meet up. We have a nice group!!!
@@paisleystitcher1243 thank you for the invite. Yes, hopefully if there are enough of us the Shop will carry more.
Hi Grace and Dawn - I am fairly new to flosstube although I have been stitching since I was in 8th grade in 1977 and have enjoyed it immensely my entire adult life. I absolutely love your format of flosstuber for a day and watching Dawn share her journey into and along the way through her life was really enjoyable to watch! Really enjoyed this!
Hi Lori! Thank you for watching! I am so happy that you enjoyed hearing about my journey.
Hi Lori, I am so glad you enjoyed this!!! Thank you for watching and commenting!!!!
I was at Sampler Symposium and was very moved by the story of Dawn’s personal voyage through/with Nicola’s Red Box when she shared it there. I was moved then and moved again by her retelling of it here, as well as hearing the fullness of her stitching journey. Thank you for sharing! ❤❤❤
Thank you Jackie. Let’s make sure we introduce ourselves at the next retreat. I would love to meet you in person!
Hi Jackie, I am so glad you enjoyed this! Dawn and her journey is amazing!!! Are you attending Summer school at The Attic? We would love to meet you!! I really enjoy your FlossTube!!!
@@paisleystitcher1243 Thank you! Unfortunately, no, I won’t be at Summer School. I’ll try for Sampler Symposium again, though! I’d love to meet you and Dawn as well. 😊
Another fantastic video chat! I went to the Spirit of Cross Stitch back in the day (in Texas) and took classes from Eileen Bennett and Maureen Appleton 😊 what a story she told and the samplers from Europe are AMAZING ❤️❤️❤️. Thanks Grace
Hi Mary! Oh fun - I went to the SoCS in Austin in 1995 … we may have both been there!! Those Festivals were so much fun! I wonder if we were in the same class with either Eileen and/or Maureen. And now we’ve met up in this fantastic community! Thank you for watching, and for writing☺
Thanks Mary! Wish I had attended Spirit of Cross Stitch!
Oh Dawn what wonderful madness! Your stitching history brought me to tears a couple of times. They were happy tears. You are both a treasure in our awesome community❤
Thanks so much Kathleen for the kind words! ☺I am very happy that you enjoyed my walk down stitching memory lane. It was a blast!
Thank you so much Kathleen!!!!❤️
There is Celebration of Needlework in Nashua, NH which has classes to choose from.
Awesome! I will go check that out! Someone who wrote to me on Instagram said to look into Needlework Galleria which will be in September. As per their website, it looks like Maureen Appleton will have a class. YAY!
Thank you so much for another awesome Flosstuber for a Day video, Grace! Dawn really is a fabulous stitcher, and I truly enjoyed seeing all of her beautiful stitching! 😊😊
Thank you so much Cindy! Your stitching inspires me!
Wonderful video! Thank you Grace this lovely interview with your friend Dawn. Dawn, I laughed, I cried. The Sulgrave Rabbit kits were sponsored by the National Historic Trust in collaboration with the HNG of which I was also a member. I believe Trish Nguyen of Thistle Threads was also involved along with Sharon Cohen. Trish still gives classes, both in person and online, one of which is the fabulous casket course. When she first started, the caskets were approximately $300 and you could purchase the plans. My husband ( a dear soul who, not unlike your spouse, also loved to work with wood) volunteered to create a casket, but as he was building our house, was put on a back burner. I no longer have the plans, or the funds to take the course. Trish Nguyen was also involved in a project for Plimoth, which also required sending in a sample of your work in order to be accepted or not. Those were interesting times. I’m so glad speciality stitches are coming back in vogue as they are so much fun. Designers like The Drawn Thread and Shepherds Bush gave one a small taste of specialty stitches and made me want more. Then I discovered the RNS. You could find kits in their online shop or on eBay. But that was then. I wasn’t able to take courses in England and tried to talk them into a satellite school and online courses. It didn’t happen until covid taught them it can and must be done. My first sampler was the Loara Standish sampler. My second was Mary Hollingworth. I embrace all types of stitching as long as it’s by hand. May everyone’s stitching journey be filled with joy.
Hi Maryann, I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed your comments!! Thank you so much!!!
