Lancashire County MCC hosted their winter Sunday trial on Caton Moor, in northwest Lancashire, northern England on 8th December 2024. It is open to all types of bikes and those on heavy twinshock bikes, like myself,...

It doesn't matter how many 'classic trials' that I watch on YT, with Bultaco's, Fantics, Majesty's and Honda TL's (my first bike was a TL125, it was a bloody heavy lump, but I loved it)..... I always think 'They aren't classics, they are the bikes I remember'. Then you realise that as a 60 year old knacker, you are talking about bikes from 40+ yrs ago!
Exactly! I'm riding a Bultaco 199b because it came out when I was in my prime in 1981. I always wanted a new one then so I restored one now instead!
@@2Wheels-OffRoad I always wanted to get the TL bored out to 150, buy a Sammy Miller hi boy frame, and reduced the weight a bit. In the end, I just bought a more modern, lighter bike 😁
Wish I had kept the TL though 😁
@@stevegill1157 I still have my cousins '75 TL250. At 73 YO it really feels heavy. I put knobby tires on it and use it for trail riding. My '75 Suzuki RL250 on the other hand is substantially lighter, has trials tires, but when it's in my hands it might as well be 500 lbs. the way I ride 😂.
i had a TL125 bored out to 180 in a hi boy frame. But all I remember is trouble really. Kick start ratchet went because of the extra bore! I then moved onto Bultaco and my ride improved considerably!
Nice Vid 🙂 Superfast editing too!
Great to meet you Darrell! Long term admirer of your work. Cheers Phil
@@2Wheels-OffRoad I had a look at your YT site and you have some amazing stuff on there. You have outstanding views/subscribers too, in such a short time. Well done, you have certainly reached the Trials community and they obviously like you! Keep up the good work Phil.
@rubensano7213Thanks. First and foremost I'm a trials enthusiast, then I let all the other stuff happen!
Happy New Year from Australia., very much enjoying watching your trials vlogs
Glad you like them! Happy new year to you!
Already it's going to be a good one, right in the beginning you show TL250 😀. Thanks again, love the twin shocks and your video editing is very nice.
The TL250 had to be the cover shot this time! Thanks.
Great Series😊
Another great conversation!! Keep them coming. Thanks.
Love the vid
You know that I wouldn't class myself as a fan, but that's an immaculate blue Bult. Is it 1979/80?
Thanks - it is a 1981 199b 6speed 340. I restored it mostly myself - it is a great ride.
@2Wheels-OffRoad You've made a cracking job of it! My mate took delivery of a 250, brand new.... It looked gorgeous (he had a red 250 beforehand, and the blue made it look so different from the original). I'm off to look at a few bikes tomorrow, ranging from pre-65, 80's, 90's and a 2yr old Vertigo. 60th birthday present to myself, even though it is 40yrs since I last rode a trials bike.... Once in the blood, I guess it never leaves 😁.
Wow! He made that look easy!
Tough conditions! Loving the title reference to Ulverstons (probably) most famous son 😁.
Good video, and boy, that looked like a tough one!
“Eric’s a strong rider” **falls again** 😂 Perfect timing.
🤣👍
Phil's great video from Brookhouse Brickworks shows the venue, first used in the 1950s, at its best (or worst) depending upon one's view. It looks to have been a hard trial but to put it into context, the Expert route winner lost 25 and the last Expert rider was on 88, the best Green course rider finished on 7 with the last on 56, the best Clubman lost only 5 with the last on 86, so not horrendous scores after four laps of ten sections and a very tiring ride. No big steps, nothing nasty or dangerous, just a slippy trial.
@@mikerapley1303 thanks yes correct Mike: it is the wearing down process for the riders, between the sections rather than inside the sections, that makes this such a test in a winter’s day. A great trial. And I feel like a hero today simply for finishing 😉
Good grief, I used to live in Brookhouse and had no idea this was on my doorstep!!
Rode a few Normandale rounds at this venue, loved it, happy days!
My mate had a Blue Bult from new and it looked stunning, but I really wasn't a fan of how it rode. Give me a Montesa or Fantic of that era any day. Apologies to Bultaco fans everywhere!
No worries each to their own! The Bulto suits me well and makes me smile and is a good gripper (mostly!). Cheers Phil
I really enjoy the video. I am 73 yrs. old and live in the U.S. I bought a 1975 Suzuki RL250 and if I remember, trials were just starting to be "noticed" in the states. I still own the RL and ride trails with it, not trials. They had a National Trials event several miles from my home in 1976. This gave my cousin who owned a 1975 Honda TL250 and I an opportunity to ride a real trials course. Gave us a real appreciation of the skill needed.
Thanks for your story. When I was a lad my mate had a nice RL I always fancied one back then. More recently I’ve had a thing about the Honda TL250. I think there ended up being more of them sold in the US than the UK. Cheers Phil
great interview, and really good points. yes, trials is one of the only sports where everyone, as a person, is equal. doesn't matter who you are, what you do, how much you have in the bank, the best rider wins. doesn't even matter if you have the latest bike. i started riding in 1978, still love it, still enjoy a day with friends, still enjoy the challenge. Rappers i remember well from my schoolboy nationals in the 80's . happy days
Must say i agree with your views on man made hazards this really developed many years ago now largely starting with TV Exposure on kickstart and certainly at the time attracted some new riders but really in my view this has now so changed the sport it puts off more riders than it attracts .
legend absolute legend :)
i,ll look forward to the next time you get the kettle on cheers
Rappers, you legend! 👍👍
Nice one!
Bring back the 4ply tyres !!

Have u got elec ignition on ur bulto
Yes. It works well 👍
Great footage as always. Thanks for taking the time 👍
why are so many riders pumping the throttle for all it's worth ??
4 great uploads ta
👍
great upload ta
this is exactly how trials should be filmed, a good section ride after ride so a comparison can be made. Not like the f.i.m. film it one top rider on a few sections, then another rider and on a few sections and on and on, great stuff.......ta
I don’t think the rigid will be making another appearance here😂 was a great day with a friendly group!
Great effort 💪
Great footage, thank you 👍
Pleasure 👍
🤔 The woman with the two children seems to be desperately wishing for a stamp from a front wheel on her face... just my 2 cents... sorry 🤐

Good footage 👍👍You captured my mate getting a Scott certificate ,he did the 3 Peaks X race as well, a rare double !
That’s fantastic. Who was that?
@@2Wheels-OffRoad Joe Forrest No 75
Great place to sit and catch all the drama. Thanks for the footage...memory always fades and you begin to think things are easier, but that's got to be one of my most hated sections. Never any grip.
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes the camera always flattens it Billy. It’ve been going there since the early 70s and it’s a lot more rutted hence bigger protruding rocks now. And tired riders!
I'm new in to trials but on these multi day rides, like the moer endurance ones, are they also getting penalty's on putting foots down? or is it timed?
So in this Scott trial it’s a one day event. The riders are under time pressure and will lose marks for slower overall times, as well as putting foot down. So both! The Scott is called a time and observation trial
Excuse my ignorance, but what triumph engine is in that 2cyl bike.we don’t have anyone riding anything like that here in the states where I ride.thats a really cool bike.
Yes there are some twin cylinder Pre65 bikes mostly Triumph I think. Sounds cool eh!
@@2Wheels-OffRoad yeah they sound really cool!what street bike do most of those engines come out of?
@@motomn12 I’m not sure on the triumph twins presumably something from the early 60s
@@motomn12 I’m afraid I don’t know presumably some pre 65 triumph twin
Thanks for bringing all of the action really enjoyed watching and well done to all the competitors 👏👏👏
Thanks - it’s a pleasure to share
The bottom bit seemed to be the most tricky - slithery nonsense !
But most of the 5s were at the top near where I was stood. Note many bottled the step and opted for a 5 going outside flag. GoPro flattens step a little!
Not entirely sure what I think about the new finish, I like to see them coming up the field. Nice to see a couple of new sections but there was no Underbanks this year which is a shame. Nice coverage over the 4 videos! You went to bits that I didn't. I went to Surrender and Grand Canyon and Reels Head.
Thanks- yes I’m not sure about the new finish either seemed a bit anticlimactic and was also not so easy for everyone to access. But a nice spectacle. We should have combined resources on the filming we could have had a mega film!
Thanks for being there and for great coverage!
It’s a pleasure- thank you
Top footage,Top efforts. Watched at Tank trap & Stang house myself. Great to see different sections. Also giving the nation viewing access with your filming. Onwards & Upwards 🔥👌💪😎🔥🏍️
Oh thanks- I just feel it needs to be shared with only small part of extra effort on my day. Glad you like it 👍
Some of them spectators sitting a bit close to the action
i almost thought they were sat on the flags
The observer should make sure nobody crosses the section when a rider is making his way up, this can be very off putting to riders who spot them doing so.
Fantastic atmosphere wish I could have made it but your videos are the next best thing,,, thanks for posting
Thanks the Scott is always an amazing atmosphere 👍
Awesome video thanks, well done to all of those taking part 👏👏👏
🙌🏼
Great video thanks,,, looking forward to watching the other three,,, keep up the great work 👏👏👏
Glad you enjoy it Cheers Phil
thanks for the great coverage wish I'd gone to watch instead of playing golf!
Pleasure Angus thanks. It was a cracking day of sport. Cheers Phil
This was a great section and some fabulous riding skills, thanks for sharing,; Nice piece of engineering at the finish arch.
Thanks it was such a brilliant spectacle of sport
That was a brutal snicket to conquor, tyre pressures make a big difference on this type of footing.
Yep! And tired riders!
@@2Wheels-OffRoad tired riders on tired tyres 😇 it looks like quite a lot of air pressure especially on the first mates?
Bike trap not tank ! Feeling their pain doing that
@@robhall9599 good point! I should change the title of the film. It was so hard and the camera tends to flatten it out and make it look easier than it is.
@@2Wheels-OffRoad definitely flatter on camera, plus slippery limestone rocks. You don’t know how hard that event is till you try it. All that finish it are in a different league to ordinary riders.
@@robhall9599 I tried it. Twice.
