Unearthing Rosewood: An Archaeology of Racial Violence
This documentary explores the archaeology of the 1923 Rosewood Massacre. This video was made possible with financial support from the Florida Division of Historical Resources (Small Matching Grant #19.h.sm.200.85).
The film was completed in 2019 and additional interviews scheduled for 2020. Those plans were interrupted by COVID-19. Then, as the world returned to normal, other projects took attention away from this documentary.

thanks for this. do you know if LAStools can extract a DEM from a TIF file?
Thanks so much for this content. Really nice video!
Thank you for the video, very helpful! One question: when I want to create a viewpoint, it says the Raster is not in metric units. How can I correct that?
You should be able to use the (re)project tool to assign a metric coordinate system (UTM, etc.).
this is so good. best tutorial
Thanks
Followed step by step but i just get a thick line on the side and coordinates in the corners... can't get it to do the grid
Hmm, not sure about that. I followed the tutorial just now (to make sure nothing is out of date). My best guess is that the interval may be off? I'd start there, and perhaps shift the CRS a bit to see if that is the issue. For instance, when I'm using certain LatLong systems, it is easy to get that kind of result, especially if I'm in a large scale (small area).
great tutorial, can i download the map for offline usage?
Liked & subscribed! Interested in LIDAR mapping and converting point clouds into various models that can be used for planning homestead development, permaculture food forests, ponds, drainage & irrigation systems, and infrastructure. Thanks for this clear video presentation.
Fab clear instruction. Thank you!
Hi, the description link for the national map is no longer working, thought you would like to know! The interface also seems to be different now...
Thanks. I've updated the link. Interface changes happen, unfortunately. I hope to update these tutorials in the coming months.
What is the soundtrack at the start? Very calming.
I honestly don't remember! :(
Hey AnthroYeti, greetings from Brazil! I need to integrate a PostgreSQL database with a webpage automate a process to clip images, and I was needing a website with Google Hybrid default page, with coordinates and this method is the perfect for me. Thank you.
I couldn't get access to the data file for this lesson. Not sure if it is available elsewhere?
I'm new to this and I wanted to say thanks for doing a great job explaining how to use this software :)
Great Help, thank you !.
This tutorial was posted like 4 years ago, I don't know if I can get quick help here. My QGIS doesn't have Las2demPro, how can I get that?
Yeah, been a while, will eventually remake these. When I do, I'll drop the LASTools video and either focus on QGIS's LiDAR tools, or the combo of CloudCompare and QGIS. Fortunately, I do have a video on using CloudCompare and QGIS! You can find it here: th-cam.com/video/eWo-CuTzlyw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=AJQEKABA3WQhn9F8
Even if i edit the map grid properties, the grid does not show up:(
Could be a few things, such as a strange or poorly defined coordinate system (CRS). I recommend starting with a very simple map, just adding a basemap from Google or ESRI (see my other videos on install QuickMapServices). Then, with just a simple base map, create a new Print Layout and see if that works.
thank you ... but if i want to get real rgb of that place how can i get them .... with global mapper its possible but i dont know how to get this on QGIS ?
very easy and clear. Thank you
Thanks for your video, sorry for the newbie question, but when i create the grid it gives me the coordinates in decimal, how could i display them in degrees like your example?
Could be that you need to change the coordinate system of either the overall document or the files used.
@@ArchaeoSquatch thanks for your video and also for this information. I would like to ask regarding this topic. I have been using the data trhu kmz with using dms settings, but still the grid format only show decimal option. What do i need to change in my document? Thank you
thank you x4
Sir, where have you been? 😳 I've been looking for a mentor. I am from PH 🇵🇭
Thanks for putting this video together. It's ging to be so useful to me! Do you by any chance have a process for generating a normal map based on the original topology and adding it to the lowpoly mesh?
Hello. Actually, it should be a similar process of baking the texture map, but choose normal instead.
Nice so easy.
Can someone please help me with the issue that moendopi mentioned? For whatever reason LASTools is not processing the data correctly when I select a .laz file for lasinfo or lassplit. All I get is an error about the file path not being correct.
A couple of things could explain this. This could be that LASTools is not installed correctly, which is covered in the video (make sure it is in the correct location and that settings is set to that). Sometimes, I think having the .laz/.las file in a path with spaces (e.g., C:/Users/Name/All LiDAR/) can cause an error. Honestly, I now recommend folks use CloudCompare. I have a very nice video about that workflow here: th-cam.com/video/eWo-CuTzlyw/w-d-xo.html
Followed step by step, yet grids won't show up. CRS in on WGS 84, map units and all. Stuck for 4 hours now
U R great!
Big step up from PPG!
Hi! Thank you for a very useful video :) I wonder, I want to create a DEM and a DSM, but it seems to be the same process when I search on it. Do you choose class 2 in the Las2demPro to get the ground points? How do I generate a surface model on the same data set? All the best!
Honestly, I'd recommend using CloudCompare, here's my video on creating DEM and DSM from lidar - th-cam.com/video/eWo-CuTzlyw/w-d-xo.html
Nice tutorial. But how about the error? It happened during the last step Texturing. Meshroom 2023.1.0 [21:49:41.928853][info] Start mesh atlasing (using Geogram LSCM). OpenNL assertion failed: param > 0, file:C:\dev\vcpkg-latest\buildtrees\geogram\src\5296ce80d3-9df1bba3f7.clean\src\lib\geogram\NL l_api.c, line:193 Abnormal program termination: received signal 22 (SIGABRT) I don't have directory C:\dev\
That might have something to do with meshing and/or texturing selections. However, I'm not familiar with that error. I'd recommend posting it to the GitHub discussion page, there is an active community there and I bet you'll find far more intelligent people than me to answer your question! :) github.com/alicevision/Meshroom/discussions
thanks this was so helpful
Hello! it is a wonderful tutorial! I have a question though. The compiled tif does not seem to have any data (it looks like a plain black square). But the splitted .LAS files have all the needed data in it. Do you have any idea why? I really need the Geotiff compiled. Thank you!
Thanks! I'm not sure what's happening with that, might be an issue with the setting. You might also try to use my other workflow for LiDAR data, here's a link to the tutorial: th-cam.com/video/eWo-CuTzlyw/w-d-xo.html&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
Doctor, I am studying in the Department of Archeology. Is this program useful for detecting the remains of buildings submerged in sand or dirt? And what satellite images do you recommend, through which I can detect the remains of buildings underground?
Hello, thanks for the question. So, the only way these tutorials would reveal buried buildings or structures is if their ruins produce differences in the ground surface. For instance, ruins covered in dirt or sand might show rectangular patterns in LiDAR data. Of course, I have videos for processing that data later in this series, but that requires you to have LiDAR or similar data for your study area. Most remotely sensed satellite imagery (e.g., Landsat) does not have the resolution to reveal buildings, although they can reveal large features like prehistoric roads. Hope that helps!
@@ArchaeoSquatch What software can analyze LiDAR data? Can Qgis analyze it? Where can I find the videos?
@@ArchaeoSquatch I want you to give me the videos. I will not find a possible expert like you, sir, in this field. Please help me
@@ArchaeoSquatch I hope that you will help me by giving me the videos, programs and data type, and I thank you for your patience
Or how can I process Landsat 8 or 9 data with the Q G IS program in a way that enables me to complete my studies to search for buildings or objects buried under sand or soil
Around 3:50 where should the downloaded LAZ file be saved so that it can be found in QGIS? Is there a folder within the LAStools folder (saved in my Applications, as I am using a Mac) that these should be saved in so they can be accessed, or can I just make one for them wherever? The latter approach has not worked.
I'm not familiar with Mac computers, but using a Windows machine you can save the downloaded LAZ/LAS files anywhere on your hard drive.
Clear and concise, thank you. Great content. 👍
Great! Glad the video was useful! :)
Any alternative workflows now that lassplit and las2dem are licensed?
Absolutely! Use CloudCompare! :) I have a tutorial for that - th-cam.com/video/eWo-CuTzlyw/w-d-xo.html
Nice presentation; very helpful. Thank you.
You are welcome! :)
Impressive. Thanks a lot.

You are most welcome! :)
When downloading the zip file, there was no Muaggatt_template file, I am not sure how else I can find the Headers for the table. Any help is greatly appreciated!
I also noticed that when you downloaded the zip file you also did not have that file when copying, but when you pasted it, it was there.. how lol
@@katchristensen451 Ah, I think the link was broken for the muaggatt_template.zip. I've now updated it. You should be able to download it.
great learning, thanks for sharing, I was tying similar way on mac but unfortunately getting error with lasinfo, lassplit, LAStools console output /bin/sh: C:LAStools/bin/lasinfo: No such file or directory -- tried to check the path, but seems LASstools not allowing me to set path in Qgis, could you help me in this, installed wine too but still not identified.
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, I do not have access to a Mac computer. I did find this from the University of British Columbia, it may help even though it is a couple of years old - gis.ubc.ca/tutorial/installing-lastools-for-lidar-data-in-qgis-for-mac/.
@@ArchaeoSquatch Thanks for quick reply.
When trying to produce LAZ files and produces LAS (split files) the LAS doesn't produce for me?
Thank you! This is perfect for teaching map production in QGIS 3 to our archaeology students
Thank you for the video, it already helped a lot. However, I get the spaghettification (even with reprojecting in LASTools) only during the "rasterize" window, once I hit "update" grid. Before that, all looks normal. Do you have an idea what might be causing this?
Alright scratch this. The answer is: cloud compare defaulted the setting for me to Projection->direction-> X values, when it is supposed to be Z. my bad.. thanks again for the great video!
@@kamkr8442 No worries, and thanks for coming back with the solution!
Another great tutorial, thank you. You are saving my GIS life with these videos. They are the most helpful and easy to follow resource I have found on this topic. Much appreciated.
Fantastic! I'm moving to a new position in the coming weeks. Hopefully, I'll have time for some fun new videos after that. Thanks!
Really useful, thank you!
Excellent! Glad it was useful!
This is excellent, really useful. I would just like it if you explained the last step in more detail.
Thanks! If I understand correctly, I examine the last step in a bit more detail, and describe how to upload this map online for others to use in this tutorial th-cam.com/video/ULKuVOPxqEo/w-d-xo.html
Thank you. I wish there are instructions to make maps more like web pages. Like, to add a button that will lead to another web page (another html done by a user). I can make a button, but cannot place it for example under the Legend.
Thanks so much for this tutorial man! Saved my life (job)
Excellent! Glad the video helped! :)
Is there a way to assign a CRS to the DEM when exporting it? I’ve used this tutorial a few times now and never had an issue in QGIS, but I made a DEM for use by a coworker in ArcMap and it wouldn’t play nice.
