“Escapism”
Tolkien on Fairy Stories: amzn.to/4c6WCve
The label "escapist" is thrown around by critics, and it usually denotes a sort of underhanded insult, but Tolkien had a different idea about it.

Fantastic work !
thanks so much!
This downgrade really isn't necessary.
Right? It's as though people see animation as some kind of secondary sub artform and live action is its true realization. Dumb
You may hate to hear it but that means Rings of Power counts as Escapism too
Did Tolkien love the Escapism of early Disney? They were making all sorts of Fairy Tales accessible to the public through animation
Someone tell this man what Tolkien thought of Disney
Wonderful video as always. My only complaint is that you don't upload more often 😂. Great job tying in the underlying Christian beliefs that Tolkien had which influenced his worldview.
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen on TH-cam. It's almost too good for this site. Not only was the content perfect, but the way it was delivered... Truly mesmerizing.
Right?! This is deep and a lot of it is original thought which is rare on TH-cam, wish more people could find it. You kind of have to weed through all the prank videos, and commercial paid influencer videos in order to find i this channel, Totally subscribed.
Thanks so much, I’m so glad you enjoyed it and it resonated with you so deeply. Consider sharing it with your Tolkien-loving friends so more people can enjoy it!
Is that cap in the end or a similar dialogue to his?
Yeah that’s cap 👍
tbh, this is the underlying reason entheogens and even ganja are illegal, were in many places until recently - "there is nothing but this material reality and to escape it is a sin!" this video is surprisingly very gnostic & Buddhist. the Buddhist - extending the metaphor from the modern grind to samsāra, this world system into which we're born into seemingly endlessly until we realize that it's actually a lobster trap...shiny objects (sense experiences) lure us into a (material) trap for the benefit of who dangled the lure (the Archon or Mara* in Buddhism). * canonically speaking, Mara gets indirect benefit as he's something of a gate keeper of the exit from samsara; due to remnant delusions (maya) of ill will & egotism, he mocks and challenges attempted escapees...and when he dissuades a prisoner from escaping, Mara feels terribly clever and justified (in clinging to his ill will & egotism). take it as a metaphor for our internal struggle or an external reality (spirits/non-corporeal life exist), functionally it's the same....conditioned views and believes are used against us to win over our minds and hearts to causes that benefit others at our own expense. ❤️🩹🤓✌️
They followed the first footage of Middle Earth being shown by having an Unexpected Party? I love this.
A bit outside your normal videos, but I liked it a lot!
Thanks! Always trying to stay fresh and don’t wanna get stuck in any formulas 🤙
@9:23 which movie is this?
That one is Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
In paraphrase of a J.B. Peterson quote, sometimes stories are more real than real life. Excellent edit!
Thanks so much! They absolutely are
And is the making of an essay on escapism a form of escape in and of itself?
@NerdofTheRings better get on over here quick.
Escape from circumstance is not the same as attempting to escape from life. The best so-called escapist media offers new perspectives on life and can refresh our view of it. The prisoner will seek to escape their cell via literature, but through it may find that they are not so cut off from the majesty of creation or the beauty of the world as their jailers led them to believe. This is why authoritarians fear escapism: it frees us from the prison of the "real" and shows us what is and could be. Excellent video!
So excellently put! Thanks!
you deserve much more views mate. love the tapestry animation
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it
THE GREAT GATES OF KIEV!!!
Mussorgsky's PAAE always an absolute win
He got that dawg in em
Great video and lovely visuals, especially the little Tollers!
Thanks Glad you enjoyed! I figured an animated tapestry was fitting for Tolkien
Love the music score for this video - a lot of my favourite pieces here.
Finally a fellow classical enjoyer haha, I love slipping in my favorite composers when I can. Had to fight through bogus copyright strikes for the Mussorgsky one but it was worth it.
If life was meaningful, why try to escape from it?
Because it's not always meaningful, and not in all aspects. Meaningfulness of life (life...what a giant word!) isn't a monolithic trait, it's a dynamic spectrum.
perhaps what we call escape can help us to see meaning in what we once considered hollow and mundane. The best literature is like this.
It has been stated that the distinction of escaping life versus circumstance plays a part, and then for how long and in what manner? People do it all the time with imaginings of their fears and assumptions of others they dislike or objects they distrust, knowledge they believe nothing about. They just use certainty to pretend their views are reality when they fabricate lies constantly to suppress their own vulnerability they were taught narrowly was a weakness. People like Tolkien are more likely to try using/creating art that is an honest reflection of the beauty they know exists in the world rather than to look at others and project their fear and force effort from other people to continue feeding their own deluded, parasitic fantasies. In other words, escapism is a part of living. It doesn’t have to be absolutely what living is on its own. The very act of calling someone lesser or viewing them in your reality as committing a sin for “escaping” is a form of escape into one’s familiar shell to fit into what they know or think is true. Nobody looks at religion and calls it escapism because it’s so ingrained as part of humanity and history, but when you start to think how art and myths and stories are treated similarly, with faith and doubt, with certain belief or utter ignorance, you realize what Mythwest mentions in the video: learning the value of control and safety in power is to exhibit and employ those values whereas creativity exploring the unknown and accepting the terrors of freedom breeds a new perspective/thought.
I’ve come to notice that people who are deeply unhappy, joyless and bitter try to spread their mindset to as many as they can.
so do happy well adjusted ppl they're just more rare and the negatives stand out more (that's a neurological fact, fwiw)
Tolkien 100% deserved a dog edit, he goes unfairly hard especially when you realize he came up with middle earth just because he wanted a world to put his ENTIRE LANGUAGE he came up with in.
Also, this was just a fantastic video, some of your best work. In today's incredibly polarized environment, we all need good Faery stories.
Thanks so much I’m glad you enjoyed it! Yeah there’s always a need for escapism, but especially recently in these turbulent times He does indeed go “unfairly hard” hahaha
love the vid
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Lord of the Rings trilogy will always be the gold standard of fantasy book adaptations
Agree, and with the clear level of respect the filmmakers had for the source material, I’d add it’s a gold standard for adaptation of -any- literature tbh
Do it - Bring back the intermission.
Yep, we want it all...and we want it now!<g>
That will be very interesting as the movie will start with The Hobbit trilogy (PJ made it to fit in LOTR universe as completing JRR Tolkien last task) then Fellowship of the Ring.
The fact that Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens all beat Harvey Weinstein - one of the most powerful and simultaneously unpleasant and vile executives to taint Hollywood - in order to make this movie, makes this trilogy even more awesome than it already was.
For real, I’m gonna need a bts show for this like Paramount did with The Godfather (“The Offer”)
Just imagine trying to reboot Harry Potter I mean talk about rebooting perfection of an adaptation… oh wait… well that one didn’t age quite so well (Seriously look it up there rebooting harry potter as a TV show)
Right?? That was honestly so mind boggling when i saw the headline, like... is literally anyone asking for this??
@@mythwest nope no one asking but there doing it
The first one was just fine, it was the sequels that ruined it.
All the Miramax suggestions would be more than welcome at the Amazon offices.

U good bro?
I mean, if they drew inspiration from extinct stem mammals and reptiles then the designs could get really funky and realistic looking at the same time.
Honestly though, with how Voyage ended, I feel like even the filmmakers knew this was gonna be the last in the series, which I think is fine. Narnia works better a trilogy anyways cause the books get WEIRD after Voyage. In the end, I’m glad the movie franchise ended with our heroes NOT dying in a train crash like the books did. So I can headcanon that out human characters don’t die and live happily ever after. LET ME BELIEVE.

8:31 What the heck, that was EPIC, i had goose bumps the spine tingling kind, the Music and the first scene was just amazing, brilliant...Peter Jackson, what a Legend......
The one and only difficulty with The Lord of the Rings is there is no explanation of why was Denethor CRAZY. Denethor uses the Palantir of Minas Tirith with good intentions to peer into Sauron's mind (just the same as Saruman using the Palantir of Isengard). Sauron instead gets into everyone’s head, taunting all filling doom and terror, that all was lost.
Not enough people give Robert Shaye credit for the existence of these movies. Without his insane risk Peter Jackson never gets to make these movies.
He truly put everything on the line with New Line
I wonder how many amazing films we never got because they faced obstruction like this and didn’t prevail
@@billusher2265 scary to think about, we only hear about the ones who survived
HELL YEA, a mini series on Netflix with 1 hr per episode would satisfy everybody I think, the fans would get more time with their characters n world n new comers will get prolly the most amazing show ever BUT im sure Amazon would do some to interfere n stoppit, they kno it would overshadow their ROP slop, no chance in hell sadily
Weinstein also almost ruined Princess Mononoke, but no cuts 🗡️
This is a lovely idea
Mini-series is PERFECT! Do it WB! PLEASE!!!
