Simplify Accessing Power BI Reports for Business Users: Building a One-Stop Reporting Hub
Business user who just want to quickly locate and run their reports often complain that the Power BI Service home page is cluttered and confusing.
In this video, I'll cover 2 approaches to making it simpler and quicker for business users to access Power BI Reports.
I've had lots of feedback that the Power BI Service Home page is cluttered, confusing and just not a good user experience for day-to-day business users who want to run reports.
They are not interested in building their own reports they just want to quickly and easily get to the information they need so they can use it to make better decisions.
Power BI "Apps" are tools designed to package reports in a single location that a business user can navigate to and find all the information they need in one place. Apps are great however if you want to show the same report in multiple apps then this can be an issue in terms of ensuring that the same version of the report is published to each app each time the report is updated.
Often apps are created on a department-by-department basis. For example, there is an app for Maintenance, an app for Health, Safety and Environment, for Operations, Finance etc.
But what happens if you are a manager and you want to look across multiple departments? You don't want to have to navigate to 4 or 5 different apps. You want all of your reports in one place, that is quick to access and simple to navigate around.
In this video, we'll cover 2 approaches to make it quick and easy to set up apps that can pull reports from apps into a single location, without then needing to publish multiple versions of the report.
The first approach using apps, but using a feature that allows you to embed links into your app.
The second approach uses Matrix Scorecards as a landing page reporting hub that shows the key values, but also lets you quickly navigate to your tailored list of reports and apply a custom filter to each one!

    Amazing idea to use metrics as a navigation page! Nevertheless, if you prefer to bundle copies of reports in the site manager's app, this is not that much of a maintenance nightmare: You can either use a REST API and a deployment script to deploy to two workspaces or you can set up a watchdog process that, once a new version is published in the report's main workspaces it is copied to the site managers workspace. For this approach, I'd recommend to use live connected reports so that you don't create copies of the data. Since you need Power BI deployment pipelines to automate the update of the app and you need Premium license for deployment pipelines, that may be the solution for larger organizations. But I think, for many use cases I like your metrics approach more anyway.

    Interesting video. I'm new to Power BI. What's the benefit of creating an app for, in your example, the Site Manager, rather than simply giving them access to the Site Manager workspace and filling the workspace with the reports/scorecards/etc relating to the Site Manager?

    • @jasondavidsondata
      @jasondavidsondata 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Definitely use an app. They offer loafs of additional options for end users to make is easier for them to access reports. Sorry I don't have time for a more comprehensive answer but do a bit of Googling to find out what the options are because it's defo a better option. Plus if you have added the reports to the workspace it's just clicking a few buttons to publish the app.

      Off the top of my head it could be a few things. 1.) You have a blank value for a risk ranking. 2.) Your have 26 unique values, instead of 25. In the values assigned to each work order. Hope that points you in the right direction.
