A Leap Into February
มุมมอง 1.2K10 ปีที่แล้ว
Announcing a new plein air painting adventure that will begin February 1, 2014.
out of curiosity! how many mediums do you dabble with?
With these paints... Just the Quick Dry medium.
i just got done asking someone about temperature in shadows and how to determine if it is cooler or warmer ! only if i woulf of found your channel earlier
love the vids ! voice over gave it a podcast feel to it with the vid as reference was nice i enjoyed it thx
Thanks Pierre!
No medium?
The only medium I use with these is the Quick Dry medium. And I use it from time to time to make the paint more malleable, and of course to get it to set up faster.
Marc, thank you so much! I’m a gouache beginner but intend to learn much to add to my oil paintings. This is a wonderful video with many great tips. Just watching your painting strokes is priceless. Awesome lesson! Many thanks.
Hey Bonnie... Glad that they're welcomed and will be useful.
Oil and water can never mix.. So wouldn't the water start drying first which would then make the oil implode and crack?
I am pretty sure he's talking about blocking in the initial stages of the work in acrylic and letting it dry for a few hours before coming back with oil. We cover acrylic with oil every time we use acrylic primed panels, no problem at all.
I wish there was more information about mixing those 2 mediums. I can't imagine
Not "mixing" the two per se. Acrylic under, let dry, take to finish in oil. Like he says in the short snippet, on a rigid substrate like board, nothing with flex like stretched canvas.
I can hear this clearly and the caption is fine with your speaking.
Great demo very fresh . Nice
Interesting & Informative throughout the entire presentation. Thank you for sharing this. Subscribed !
Thank you for your comment.
Very informative! Thanks for the demonstration. Very good 👍
Thank you!
Hey Marc, it's great to see you here on YT! Great demo and I hope you're doing well. Do you miss Wisconsin?
Thank you for the video Marc, I know how much work it is to edit and post these. I prefer Cobra oils having tried Artisan and found they seemed to keep sticky for a long time, it could have been the way I used them, I don't know.. I am frustrated that Cobra don't seem to have an effective drying medium, their fast dry seems a bit sticky to use to me unless I also add bit of water to loosen it. A fast dry paste would be nice as well. I don't know if Artisan may have a better dryer that could be used with Cobra oils. I tend to use the Cobra without any medium except a tiny touch of water if needed. It seems you can either use a lot of water and get a wash effect or a small amount to loosen the paint, but as you say water is for cleaning the brushes really.I love the soft nature and colour saturation of the Cobra oils. Looking forward to future tips you may have for using water soluble oils.
Hi Bryan. What I've noticed is that if I use straight, un-thinned (with water) paint and a little quick dry medium, I get a nice texture. If I use too much, and it's like adding water to cement, it goes over the top and yes, becomes too sticky and runny. I only occasionally use water for thinning, and mostly in the beginning. You might try a different surface. I've played around a lot with more and less absorbent grounds, smooth or rough textures, just sized raw board is nice too. As for Artisan, I sort of agree with you. Some painters I know of like Artisan for that reason but they paint in a pretty heavy impasto style and enjoy the grab of the paint. They do make better driers, and I've tried them with Cobra but quit because I know that the two are made of different ingredients and that it might be a problem. Here's something you might try... I like painting on purchased pre-primed cotton canvas from Blick. I usually over prime with Utrecht pro ultra-thick primer to lesson the texture of the cotton. Then I block in my paintings sometimes using acrylic paint, no medium. Once that's dry, I over paint entirely with Cobra oils. They seem to really work well with the surface of acrylic paint more than if it's plain acrylic primer. Cheers!
You mentioned glazing gouache- do you use acrylic medium for that? Or something else? This is a terrific demo and I think doing voice-over is perfect rather than talking while you are actually painting at the same time. Thanks.
Hi Susan. No medium, just thinned with water gouache and a very light touch, one pass stroke. Apply it and don’t go back in. If you do you’ll pull the under color up.
Thank you! Refreshing perspective!
"Painting it without painting it." Yes. What I get from your captures of nature's beauty is your great understanding of the light, and your ability to get that just right.
Thank you, Susan. All of that couldn't be if I hadn't spent years and years, thousands of paintings, painted from life. As far as I am concerned, that's the only school to learn from.
Immensely helpful to watch you work, and your commentary is brilliant. Love hearing you talk about pallets and your work with Schmid. Thank you sharing!
I have used WN water mixable with a water soluble medium . I have never tried them out of the tube without anything ~ I also have found then to have a long drying time and remain sticky for a long time. I never varnish since they seem to dry with a nice gloss finish.
I actually like the consistency of WN Artisan paints. In my experience, they lack sufficient pigment strength. That could be used to a benefit, if painting and needing less strong color. I was turned into those by Yer Za Vue and Oregon based painter. She paints beautifully with the WN water mixables and likes them because they’re so textural. They do make a real nice drying medium for them that works better than the Cobra quick dry medium. Here’s her website. www.yerzavue.com/landscape
@@marchanson9779 thank you so much Marc.
Love to see you using the pallet knife as it was designed -- creating the occasional hard edge and not as a shovel to heap layers and layers of paint. In my own digital landscape work, I made my own pallet knife "brush" for that very purpose. Thanks for sharing your insights and brushwork techniques.
Mike I hear what you’re saying, and agree. I have so much admiration for all of you painting in the digital world. I was just a little early to be exposed but have thought it would be a wonderful medium to use.
@@marchanson9779 I'm 67 now and took up "painting" in the Procreate app on my iPad. You really save on supplies ; ).
Great demo with lots of good nuggets of information!
Great demo, insight. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed, Tess! Thank you.
Thanks for the great demo and ideas.
Hey Frank. Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy some of this helps out. Cheers!
Great demo Marc! Thank you for sharing!
….ha…”things that stick you.”
I’m enjoying watching how intentional you are with your brush strokes and your knife. It’s nice to see all of that in real time. Great commentary, too, thank you!
Hey Jonathan! Thanks for watching and commenting. I’m glad you’re enjoying these vids.
I am so happy to see this ! And it is close captioned!! Yay!
I didn't even think about that! Great to hear... if... it can understand my mumbling!!! lol
So glad to see you on TH-cam! I always struggled finding you on substack. Hoping you will share a pastel painting every once in a while too :)
No the scraper
Thank you, Marc! This was very helpful. The little spatula was nice. Where do you get it?
Thanks Barbara. Do you mean the small palette knife? It’s from Blick.
Those I buy at Walmart.
Great video Marc! Love your work!!
What an awesome challenge! Looking forward to seeing a pro in the snow and just how it's done when mother nature's whisper blows. Have fun out there and I'll grab some popcorn.
from a former white bear lake mn guy I envy your upcoming plein air fest. cant wait to see!!! good luck!
Excellent news Marc. It was reading about your 4-a-day marathon back in April 09 that got me out of the studio. I also started blogging my art at the same time. Happy new year and all the best with this challenge.
Very exciting Marc, can't wait to see this happen, Happy New Year!
Now that is ambition, dude. I wish you much success and hope to see the results. You choice of color palette, technique, and subject are very appealing. Wish I could do 10% as well.
Thanks Stephan... Happy New Year!
......and boldly go where no man has gone before.....fantastic Mr, Hanson!
Thanks Ani... Happy New Year! Do you have a camera? ;-)
OMG! What an AWESOME trailer! Bravo! Looking forward to seeing the work and hearing about the adventure. This is quite a challenge you've set for yourself. Have fun out there!
Pastels don't freeze. Ditch the oils for a week. Or, come back down to Atlanta and your turp will stay at 60 degrees while you paint in January. I'll be watching for some good works from my old home state of Colorado. Stay off the legal maryjane....
Thanks Gary! I'll try to do it justice...and no weed, other than the weeds I tramp through while painting these things! Happy New Year!
This is great Marc!! And very inspiring! Can't wait to see your paintings!
Happy New Year Kami! Thank you... stay tuned! ;)
Ha! Ha! Great trailer, Marc!
Thanks Bruce! :) Happy New Year!
OMG! You are hilarious. Milk Duds brother. Yeah!! You just reminded me it's all supposed to be fun ;) Can't wait to see what comes of it. Remember...never leave the studio without your Phase Pistol!
Ha ha... yeah, FUN is the word! Thanks much!

Ha ha! So awesome Marc! May the Force be with you! Paint on brother....
Thanks Liz... I got your message... time has been in the way, but I'll get back to you this week. :)
