Icy ride - EMTB Canyon Spectral:ON
Something a little different, but kind of the same...
Riding my EMTB on the local Lancashire lanes and bridleways after we were hit with snow then rain and then a hard frost. The result was a route covered in rock hard ice covered snow and rivers of ice. The sort of stuff that makes for a great ride!

Fancied camping up here the first time I drove it in the Jimny. So I did it! Couldn't have the rooftent up there with the canoe so had to go back to basics. Not quite 'Van Life', but I still had a comfy night in the back, plus I can't imagine an XL wheelbase Sprinter getting up there anytime soon... The KTM has been absent from my videos of late. It had the last MOT just as lockdown 1.0 took hold in 2020. With no plans to ride I didn't re tax it and it sat on a SORN all last year. This last week I decided it had slept in long enough so dusted it off, gave it a once over and following a fresh battery, clean MOT and a years tax it was back out on the trails. When youre just starting to make your way back down the hill, is that a lane to the right or just a footpath? Cheers
If you mean the one at 18:33 - thats just a footpath. Only one drivable track over this particular hill.
I like the magic gates, no wet feet.
Nice vid.
Thanks for that. I have a standard freelander 2. I don't think that it will make it. Lol.
I do wonder why Suzuki didnt put the 1 litre boosterjet in the new Jimny. Most people can only afford one car and would have made it a far better all rounder.
That is some gnarly tracks there boys. I’d be worried on a bike let alone in a motor vehicle! Good work 🤘🏼
Hi Bike lugger looking at your video at 8.23 you are seen on the road from Arncliffe to Kilnsey which kind got me rather puzzled when it is Ingleton to Hawes... presuming you got some footage mixed up while putting this video together... good video
Hi Megan! Well, I never said it was a direct route! In fact we usually try to fit as many lanes in as possible to make the day out more interesting which often involves some zigs and zags. Good eye to spot the road, but we did drive down there before heading back north through Starbotton. Cheers, Matt.
Hi Great video thanks for sharing. Do you think most of this could be done in a VW Crafter conversion? 4motion, lifted with a diff lock. Id love to get out there but not sure if my van is too high for the tunnels or wide for the tracks. 6m long 3m high. Thank you very much for any info you can give. Cheers Dave
Hi Dave, thanks for the feedback! Some of the loose bits on steep ground might cause issues, but I'd say a 4x4 Crafter would handle the traction and clearance side ok. However you would likely have issues with the size. It might fit through the tunnels, but some of the tracks have trees or rock faces hanging over and that's assuming you don't meet anyone coming the other way! There were quite a few times where I'd have the disco smeared up against a wall or with the wheels inches away from a drop trying to pass something. I certainly wouldn't want to deal with that in my own 6m (2.5m wide) transit. Having said that I think we did see some Sprinters on a track so you'd have to pick which ones you drove carefully. It's been that long now I couldn't advise which would be best sorry!
Hi! You make great videos! Tell me, do you have a lifted car?
Hi! You make great videos! Tell me, do you have a lifted car?
Sometimes I really wonder at the TH-cam algorithm that this never came up in my home page. Love it. I don’t often use the parking brake but there’s a few spots here 😅 … yes I would. Amazing. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. How did you find and navigate these trails Matt?
Yeah I made sure the parking brake was well serviced before I left! I’d been inspired by LRTime and one of their videos/visits. Subsequently bought a German guidebook they recommended on their channel (and spent quite a bit of time using google translate…) Some of the more interesting/challenging routes I actually found using an app and website called outdoor active. There are a load of community posted routes and you can pick what mode of transport you like from foot to 4x4. It’s handy as for a small fee you get topographical maps for most countries. I’d then ran the app through an iPad on the dash. The book was still very useful as it detailed opening times for the passes. Some are only open to 4x4s on certain days of the week. Plenty to see out there, we hope to get back at some point if the old Disco is up to it. Still need to get round to editing the last video from this trip!
thanks for sharing- is the route suitable for wide 4x4s?
Great video and locations. What satnav did you use.
I have an iPad mini (cellular) mounted on the dash running Waze / google maps on the road sections. When I’m on the tracks (and looking for them) I use Outdoor Active. Plenty of community posted routes to look at. Cheers.
@@BikeLugger thanks for that. Looks like a great. Route. Cheers
Good work, also are you slightly mad? :D I bet the views were stunning though!
Ha! Thanks and yes to both! I usually go out on my bike whenever it snows. Great for keeping skill levels up! This was particularly challenging though. Normally you sink in and can get a fair bit of traction in snow, but I was just sliding around on the top of this rock hard stuff.
@@BikeLugger Now I feel bad that I only use my bicycle in better weather :D anyway. hope you're well!
@@CarparkCarl Don’t feel bad, I recognise most people have more sense than me! As long as you use it that’s what counts!
Lots of trust with the hand brake😮
Regularly service them and they work well!
Beautifully made vid man, that's a fabulous bike you have, you planning on doing any more vids on the emtb
Thanks, it’s a great bike. I’m loving getting some miles done on it. Had it over 6 months so already beaten the newness out of it. May well get some more videos done on the bike, mostly just been riding it, but I’d ended up bringing a 360 cam home from work so thought I might as well get some interesting footage.
glad to see you again happy new year you must be mental doing that in that weather lol
I’m deffo not just a fair weather rider! It was such a nice day so couldn’t not get out and play. Cheers.
Nice to see how "old men" become boys with the right toys 😅
Massively helpful videos thank you - I've just started going off the beaten track and some of these routes aren't a million miles away from me so I'd feel confident taking them on seeing you do them first. Much appreciated!
Great to hear, I struggled to find videos of many of these lanes so I figured I'd make some myself! Glad they helped.
Yessssssss. I was nervous just watching some of those again! Hope you’re keeping well!
Ha! You’d love it. Somewhere for you to take your D4! I’m good ta, hope you’re busy playing out.
The d4 has had some light green lane usage. Currently saving for a second set of wheels and more agressive tyres.
@@CarparkCarl good stuff, use as designed. Buying mods is a pricy and slippery slope!
@@BikeLugger hopefully a less slippery slope in some respects :D
What a cracking lane! Thanks for posting. Its question marked on TW2 and i used to overlook them. Definitely a lane I'd like to do.
Cheers! It was indeed a belter. It would certainly be a fun challenge done uphill!
Is this beast having challenges Or the problem is the driver?
Great Video guys, would you be able to share how to find these routs?
Looking on Google Earth somebody has blocked the West entrance with large concrete blocks.
Those off road lanes are much better than the roads here in north Devon. You could loose a Jimny In our pot holes.
Wow, that’s impressive
Nice looking lanes, heading that way soon on my exc500
Hi pal ive joined glass and ive got tw2 where is the lane where u drive down the stream thanks
hi, is this still open as a green lane? :)
Parts riden far too quickly if ither vehicles or pedestrians about
What app is it you use for your routes please just getting into laneing and wanting to find some mild lanes close to myself thanks
I find routes using a combo of OS maps (via the outdooractive app) and Trailwise 2 (included in my GLASS membership) I'd well recommend getting a GLASS membership. Happy laning!
@@BikeLugger how much is a glass membership like bud and any chance you could send me a mild route close to South Yorkshire to try out
Looks great we are doing a run over salter from slaidburn tomorrow. Do you use the OS map on the phone as a sat nav? We use guru maps wondering you’re thoughts on the app? Great video
Hi, I've never used Guru, is it a subscription based app? I've stopped using OS maps app, it was too slow at times and lacked some functionality. I've moved over to Outdooractive. Easier to use in a web browser, community uploaded routes that you can filter by activity (walking, biking, 4x4) and included in the subscription is topographic maps of europe (inc OS maps of the uk). Hope you had a good ride, how was the snow up there?
@@BikeLugger guru maps is just one time payment, very good app just upload a gpx file and follow it. The snow was bad and very icy in places but still a good day out. Hoping to try this loop next time out.
You ever considered different mirrors (non face smackers)? Enjoyed the ride, lovely area.
Ha, yeah they were a bit annoying. This was quite a while ago. If you watch some of my more recent vids you can see I've swapped the Yamaha and also fitted some adjustable mirrors to its replacement.
@@BikeLugger I'm looking at the ones that wrap round the handlebars so I don't have to keep moving them. What was the Yam and what's replaced it? I like a bit of running commentary on the trail rides, on the area, lane, bike and skills needed, but may be in the minority.
@@xt225 The Yamaha was an XT600e, I replaced it with a KTM 690 Enduro and fitted some double take mirrors. It's not that often I do fold them away, but having the option is good. have a look here - th-cam.com/video/of4XiWbrADw/w-d-xo.html
I have a jimny and would love to know what youve added ie lift kit wheel size ect, yours look amazing
Thats actually a friends Jimny, I'd sold mine at this point and was driving my Disco 3. He's still got his and we are long overdue a day out! He'd fitted a 2" suspension lift and was running slightly larger than standard BFG all terrains. Cheers.
Love the shot over Tan Hill Inn, had many good times around there :D
Thanks, would be nice to get some snow now instead of the recent rain!
May i ask what you do for a living.
A few different aspects to my job, but part of it is to play about in the countryside as an outdoor instructor.
sounds like a dream, I bet you enjoy your job.
Great video, thanks for sharing, really useful.
Glad it was helpful! Matt.
Great vid, when is part 2 being posted?!
Thanks and great question! When I find the time to get it edited unfortunately.
Wow just wow is all I can say, watched it twice, absolutely spectacular footage, got to give it to ya that trip was well planned out, I wouldn't know were to start 🤯 thanks for the trip through the alps man👍
Any chimp with a camera can get good footage out there. The weather and scenery do all the work for you! I started by watching a ton of videos like this and making a list. Then have a google and you realise there's lots of info out there. I used 'Outdoor Active' for mapping, lots of public routes saved on there.
@@BikeLugger thanks for the reply man, will be looking forward to seeing your future adventures
Good to see you back up and running man, very nice footage👍
Cheers! Been a busy year...
Love watching how you approach green lanes. Very responsible and respectful. I've not gone this way around Scar House before and your video has helped me route plan. Thank you.
Glad to be useful! I've always figured if we keep using lanes responsibly they're more likely to stay open for all to use.
Salter fell road has been improved since this was made and there are a lot of gates on that Cantsfield trail for a solo rider.
At 10:50 - can't see a Range Rover getting through there (and not much else either!) - Love Jimnys
Yep they can squeeze through tight spots thats for sure! I have since taken my Discovery through that same gate and I didn't leave any paint behind! th-cam.com/video/iod0mKdE-BM/w-d-xo.html
@@BikeLugger Well driven!
Great videos, especially the drone shots. Just got myself a Jimny and have started to do a few tracks. (Reeth to Hawes tommorrow) If you're ever in Yorkshire and you fancy another JImny following you give us a shout!
I can't wait to get back out there as soon as this damn sprain heals. It's been 2 weeks and I can just about pick things up now 😮💨
Hi amazing video I want to try this lane in my jimny, do you have the TWUID reference please? Thank you once again
Hi, The main lane overlooking Coniston Water is SD2989-02. It's much different now, the worst bits have been 'improved' with a coating of gravel last time I drove it.
@@BikeLugger That's a shame the council cannot improve the lanes obstructed by overgrown foliage or remove illegal obstructions instead of improvements nobody wants or needs.
Salter fell, where you dropped your bike isnt as smooth as it was when they graded it for prince charles to go grouse shooting around 2005 time, used to be a regular wed night ride for us back then.
It's a great track, not many that length these days. Most of the southern half is now graded gravel and doesn't offer much challenge.
@@BikeLugger we tried looking for one of the bombers that's up there that crashed many years ago, real wild riding that was, sadly we didn't find what's left of it.
like little mountain goats, early versions with mechanical 4x4 are better than later models with a switch on dash
This is really great. I only have an Impreza at the moment so I cant do these sort of routes, thanks for upload 👍
Cheers! Glad you liked it.
