1938 Silent Film of Pete Steele Playing Pretty Polly on the Banjo
Pete Steele seated playing the banjo. Wife, Lillie (Swanner) Steele standing behind him. Their oldest son, Craig (my great-grandfather) appears off to the left standing in the doorway. Filmed by Alan Lomax on March 29, 1938 at the Steele home on Rhea Ave across from the Champion Paper plant. According to Lomax's records the song being played is the murder ballad Pretty Polly, although the corresponding audio is not available. Lomax rerecorded Pete playing Pretty Polly later that same day.
