    Good summary! We found very similar budget “impingement” over the nearly 10 years we towed our van around our great country (4 full laps plus multiple shorter trips) We were set up for off grid from the start and averaged just $10 per night for accomodation costs over the first few years…so…$300 per month. But we found that we were really only using caravan parks for the laundry….doh! Most towns have a laundrette, same cost as in the caravan park, but without the camping fee….winner! So the accomodation costs just got smaller.

    greetings from Pontassieve province of Florence Italy I have a Suzuki Jimmy 4x4 van with a 1.3 lt petrol m13a engine from 2001 that I use to make dirt farm and forest roads and paths with 4/7 cm broken gravel and I go on forest roads where woodcutters pass with their forestry tractors such as skidders and forwarders and in my opinion the Suzuki Jimmy 4x4 thanks to its size the Suzuki Jimmy 4x4 goes into territories where larger 4x4 off-road vehicles have difficulty passing!

    That was quite interesting. What happened to the spare you would think covered up with canvas, UV shouldn't have affected the rubber If were to be heat related, one would think the tyres on the van would have had the same issues. Safe travels

    • @peternewhouse4852
      @peternewhouse4852 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was very interesting. My spare isn't covered, so it had UV, and direct heat affecting it. The damage didn't show up until after it went into use. The tyres on the van are under cover and get shade for the majority of the day, so they are not as exposed as the spare. But your theory is probably correct, but to a lesser degree. The 4 main tyres will also show similar affects in time. Have a read of the comment from philj8108 (see in comments on the video), he adds some very good advice. Cheers

  • @philj8108
    @philj8108 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The tyre may have been on your van for 5 years, but that does not tell the entire story. We noticed that when we got our van, the tyres and shocks were already 14 to 18 mth old.. (I've also noticed, that the rubber valve stems are lucky to last 5 years - i.e. the rubber degrades and the tyre leaks from the valve stem ) Shelf Life of a Tyre: Typical Shelf Life: A tyre's shelf life is generally 6 to 10 years from its manufacturing date, depending on storage conditions. Rubber degrades over time due to factors such as exposure to UV light, ozone, and fluctuating temperatures. Maximum Safe Use: Even if a tyre appears to be in good condition, it’s recommended to replace it after 10 years MAX, regardless of wear. Tyres stored in ideal conditions (cool, dry, and dark) may last closer to the 10-year mark, but exposure to harsh elements accelerates degradation. How to Tell the Age of a Tyre: Locate the DOT Code: Tyre age is indicated by a four-digit code on the tyre's sidewall, often following the "DOT" marking. Understand the Code: The last four digits of the DOT code represent the week and year the tyre was manufactured. First two digits: The week of the year (from 01 to 52). Last two digits: The year of manufacture. Example: A DOT code ending in 3621 means the tyre was manufactured in the 36th week of 2021 (around September 2021). Factors That Affect Tyre Age and Condition: Storage Conditions: Tyres stored outdoors, in direct sunlight, or in fluctuating temperatures degrade faster. Usage: Driving habits and road conditions (off-road terrain, extreme heat, etc.) can wear down a tyre faster than its shelf life suggests. Visual Inspection: Cracks in the rubber, bulges, or loss of tread depth indicate that the tyre is deteriorating and may need replacing, even if it hasn't reached its age limit.

      What a brilliant summary mate. I hope that other read this as well and get your great advice. Unfortunately, most people (myself included) only find out their spare is in bad condition when it is in use, so they have a blown or damaged tyre already and no further spares at hand. Essentially they are in the poop by them. I just wanted people to look at their spares and tyres in general, but I am not an expert, so your summary is very handy for all to see. Cheers

    I was one of those that questioned the cost of travelling to the cost of staying home. You’ve done an excellent job in this “budget update” in relation to dollars spent for not travelling, as apposed to life on the road. Obviously everyone’s living and spending habits will differ, but you showing that it’s not quite as expensive as most would believe it to be. Keep up the good work, and continue to enjoy your time travelling.

      Thank you for those very kind words and encouragement. Really appreciated. Your comments on the first video were right on point and stuck with me, so I am glad we could do that comparison. Thanks for your inspiration and for the well wishes. Happy travels

    Thanks very interesting, is there a reason you didn't include utilities and phone/data costs?

    • @peternewhouse4852
      @peternewhouse4852 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi and thanks for watching. We haven’t changed the phone/data costs from our normal plans to travel, so they weren’t included. We haven’t switched to Starlink either (as yet but who knows the future hey). In regards to utilities, we have those costs still as our daughter is in our house, so no change. Everyone’s circumstances will differ, but we can share those relevant parts of ours where we can. Cheers

    Fantastic way to justify the expense of traveling which by the numbers stacked up pretty well to just staying home . We find similar to you guys extra fuel ⛽ is the bulk of the difference so that’s the expense of Caravanning 👍

      Thanks for your kind words and watching the vid. Yes, Cindy's hands have come good, but it has taken a few months to do so (video's are a little behind reality of course). Hopefully we speak again next video. All the very best.

    We don't travel far in our caravan, so we're very lucky to have somewhere as great as Lake Albert Caravan Park at Meningie close by, we're about 2 hours away. So laid back and relaxing. Looking forward to out next visit there. Glad you discovered and enjoyed it also. (Meningie = meh-ning-EE) (not 'jee') Lake Albert, Lake Alexandrina. 🙂 Google: Name derives from the Aboriginal word 'meningeng' meaning 'place of mud'" Happy travels 🙂🙂

      Morning. Glad you enjoyed the video and also enjoy the area as much as we did. Apologies for the pronunciation. We did get it right eventually, but all the filming was done by then (of course) 😂. Looking forward to getting back there one day. So relaxing. Hope you get there again soon too. Thanks for watching and safe travels Pete

      The herring bone is easy to back into. Just drive past it and a small turn backwards. No sharp 90 degree bends. Always hate the damage they must do to the bearings and tyres. Cheers 👍
