The secret to success here is. 1) keep moving grinder with little pressure 2) Use grinding wheel first to get mist 9f the metal off. 3) Use a flap disc after the grinding wheel.tje flap disc will remove most of the deeper marks. 4) Use a 120 grit disc for final finish and just blend in at the edge slightly 5) Use a small file to clean the beveled edge 6) use oil stone to sharpen the edge 7) Use...

We take a look at the secondary bevelled angles. most axes should have a bevelled edge of 30°. A splitting axe should have a bevelled edge of 30° to 40° A maul should have a secondary bevelled of 35° to a maximum of 60° The lesser the bevelled angle is, the easier the maul will penertrate the timber. 30° bevelled angle is very good, but because of the primary wedge angle, 30° bevelled edge may ...

    That's exactly how I see it too! Stihl in Germany pays a lot of expensive engineers to ensure the quality is right. Many millions of euros are invested in development and then a West Coast Saws and "Max Airflow" or Egan Performance with a foam filter is supposed to be better? I don't believe that! It looks like they want to make money with it!

      Yes spot on. The Standard air filter works well for me. Some people do very little maintenance and wonder why the saw is not working correctly

    Your theory of a sharp splitting maul splitting better makes sense, but after splitting hundreds of cords of all types of firewood, hard and soft, over 51 years, it actually makes no difference in practice. A friend proposed to me that my 8 pound maul needed to be sharpened. We tried splitting several types of hardwood before and after his sharpening, and he agreed - no difference. My maul has been sharpened only once (on that occasion). Enjoy the exercise. One block of elm can give one a good workout (unless it is frozen).

    • @ChainsawUsers
      @ChainsawUsers 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      On some hardwood it don't matter how sharp it is, the wood cam be very hard to split but generally a shaper splitting axe or mall will help on many timber species. Any angle or blunt maul will work on soft wood

    50:1 will not produce more power, probably opposite - less power... To my knowledge its all to do with emissions. With 50:1 u will have good upped cilinder lubrication, but bottom end will suffer with low lubrication, and excessive wear... Personally will never go over 40:1 mix ratio, regardless how good oil claims to be... I always said its much cheaper extra spoon off oil, then engine rebuild...

    Just got a brand new Stihl USG grinder and have never sharpened a chain before although I did watch a Stihl tech sharpen one in person. Please forgive any foolish questions I might ask. If your grinder is on a bench that is not level wouldn;t that electronic angle finder be inaccurate to measure the angle of the grinding wheel? Or did you first measure the angle of the base plate to confirm it is 0 degrees?

    • @ChainsawUsers
      @ChainsawUsers 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The angle finder has a 0° button so you place on any surface and zero it. In the case of the grinder, you place the angle finder on the bar rails of the grinder that's your 0° point in relation to the grinding wheel

    It's interesting to see the different ways this is done. I have always preferred a convex edge on impact tools and use a stone / puck and strop to maintain it. Heavy repairs on a linisher. Using a circular motion on a stone works with my natural tendency to change angles and does a good job of forming a convexed edge for me. I'm just glad I live in the time of chainsaws because I would hate to swing one of these things all day.

    • @ChainsawUsers
      @ChainsawUsers 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Most of my axes have a convex transition. I don't need them razor sharp but it's easy when you been doing it a long time. All axes including Cyclone Australia brand all have the wrong beveled angle. Only 3 axes I have brought had the correct angle. At the factory I think they put the bevel on the axe with a belt sander. That being the case you can end up with the wrong angle

    It's essential in this type of work to prevent the edge, and the area around it, from getting hot and, as a result, damaging the temper of the metal. When using a grinding disc, especially, you have to be very careful. Lift the disc up off the metal every few seconds, to prevent heat build-up. It only takes a split second for a thin wedge of metal to get overheated if the grinder is used incorrectly.

Jack would practice in his corner block of grass with enormous logs 3ft thick and 4 or 5 m long. with his axe any time of day. He had the most piercing gaze. Terrifying. We went to Johns birthday party one year. But old Jack would be standing on the log chopping away on any morning as we went by on the bus to Uni. That was the corner of Kilby rd.near the river in Kew. Is it still there? Happy days. 18:21

      @@ChainsawUsers thanks for replying, it was a great video too. I use a little hand axe over 100 yrs old, found at an old house we bought, never sharpened, sharp as anyway.

    At last, an Aussie talking about hardwood. It's hard to find information about axes and chainsaws that applies to our hardwood. The internet is flooded with yanks and their wood, which is fine, but it's just not useful to me... so thanks... subbed!

      I have never seen a axe here in Australia that had the right angle. I have 30 mauls and splitting axes and the only one that was ground correctly was 2.7kg Estwing from America it had a 30° grounded edge. Even our own brand Cyclone needed to be reprofiled to the correct angles.

    Interesting topic on sharpening axes. I've seen people on the bench grinder with their axes totally ruining (softening) them!

      Yes it takes a while to master the procedure without ruining the temper. Most axes and splitting axes from new are blunt and angle is only good for soft wood

    I have a cheap grinder and don't use the 10 degree adjustment, I leave it at zero, top plate 30 degree and 65 degree on the tilt which would be 25 on the Stihl chart, cutting seasoned hardwood I'm getting nice chips, cutting speed and cutting life is good, I don't bother with the fancy chain grinds for cutting fire wood, I hand file for felling. This was on .325 semi chisel chain. I also found you videos on grinding very helpful
