all goats grow cashmere-it's their winter undercoat. Goats from mountainous snow areas near the himalayas (parts of India, China, Mongolia) obviously have a great deal more. Almost unnoticable with many dairy breeds

We are related to the Middleton's of Middleton Place. We are the northern Middletons. A painting that hangs in the main hall is the image of my cousin, Brian Middleton. That would be Arthur Middleton. So, Carolyn we are related.

Hi Carolyn. My sisters have spent time at Middleton Place although I never have. I have always been too busy. My sister keeps trying to get me to visit. My father received documentation regarding quarters that were to be Willed to my family however dad has passed away and he left it in the hands of our family attorney and I don't know whatever came about. Not that we would ever take from this stunning historical landmark. I have not spoken to my cousin (family attorney) in ages to determine what came of this, as for us it was never an issue. I wonder where you are located? I was born and raised in Philadelphia. Recently moved to the mtns. of PA. Yes, I also watched the Patriot because I heard about the scenes taken at Middleton Place. I know this is a stunning Southern Mansion and quite difficult to find as it is off the beaten path of any main road. I hear that this is one of the most beautiful places to visit but then again, my family (our family) is probably biased. The internet has certainly made our world so much smaller that we can reach out to family members we did not know existed. Please write back. I know my daughter must go to Charleston to see where her roots began. At least on her paternal grandfather's side.

Dolores M - Hi Dolores. I was born in Media Pennsylvania and lived in Westchester as a young child. Both locations south of Philadelphia. The Middletons in my family history are from my mother's side, who died when I was quite young. My name is Caroline Middleton O'Berry. (The O'Berry's are 1 of the oldest Generations in the South and help settle 4 Southern States.) My father was in the engineering field and we've moved up and down the East Coast, primarily in the South. So, I'm a "Middleton Pennsylvanian" too! The Middletons' had residency in Pennsylvania and would summer in Pennsylvania and winter at the plantation, at least several family members did. Just to give you a touch more history, Henry Middleton, Arthur Middleton's father - In historical documentation about Henry Middleton there seems to be some confusion regarding weather he was President of the First Continental Congress, or the Second Continental Congress. Both congress's were important and you probably already know your history, but The First Continental Congress most people know for the Stamp Act, and the Second Continental Congress were the signers of the Declaration of Independence. There is Henry Middleton also which was born to Arthur Middleton. Obviously he was named after his grandfather. Henry Middleton was governor South Carolina and Minister to Russia. His son Williams Middleton led South Carolina in succeeding from the union which was the first state to succeed from the Union. It was Williams Middleton's decisions that led to the downfall of the Middleton Legacy. On Sherman's March to Atlanta he diverted pacifically to destroy Middleton Place. There's an oak tree at the front of the plantation if you drive into the frontal vista, that oak tree stood while Sherman's men camped underneath it and burned Middleton Place. There were 3 wings on Middleton Place built over period of time. If you were to stand under that same oak tree today and face the plantation towards the Ashley River, in front of you visually would be the large plantation main house, to the left the library, to the right, the house slaves quarters. The house slave quarter of the plantation has now been designated as the guest house of the plantation. Perhaps more historical documentation came forward to change the status of that wing. One of the most Bittersweets about the plantation history, is that the library is rumored to have had anywhere from 10,000 to 24,000 volumes of books! Just imagine, when to own 10 books privately, was considered a library. I know for that period of time it was the largest privately-owned library in the United States. Also, at that period of time it may have rivaled, or been larger than Thomas Jefferson's Library! I was taught that it was larger than Thomas Jefferson's Library, quite interesting if it was. Little tidbit in case you didn't know, they did find George Washington's shoe buckle when cleaning up after the fire. I do apologize by talking about subjects that perhaps you already know. Please forgive me. Do so hope you and your daughter make it down to Middleton Place. The Azaleas will be blooming soon on Azalea Hillside. The last time I went to Middleton Place some of the Azaleas and Azalea hybrids plantings were still alive that were planted over a 160 years ago! All the best hopes in visiting Middleton Place. Events occurring year-round, kayaking, restaurant, and of course, The Inn. The Inn is one of my favorite lodgings in the south, at night you can hear the Ashley River from it. You could friend request me on Facebook at Carolyn O'Berry. Take care.

Caroline, I was shocked to read you were born in Media and grew up in West Chester.I spent years in both areas as I worked on the road and this was my territory. Chester and Delaware counties were my favorite. My customers were great. My favorite was the Johnson Matthey Gold facility. I worked with Engrs. assisting in machining critical parts. Johnson also did medical devices mfgd. in platinum along with Aids Research in the same building. I love the history, I can never get enough. So, I never mind at all. Darn, I really should know you. I don't do Facebook, I am rather private and as soon as I sign up I find people coming out of the woodwork. I know I must sound like I am asocial but I am not, just private. That is why I only use first name and last initial. I still use the last name Middleton. I am wondering if you hold information as to my Gr. Grandfather that we have been searching. He deserted my Grandfather and he refused to ever, ever speak of him. As a result we don't even have a name. We have done exhaustive searches and we come up with some far off possibilities. He may have been a shipbuilder in NJ was the last story. I thought he was President of American Steel & Wire. Lawyer cousin said that was not so. Harry Middleton was my Grandfather. My grandfather was so stoic he never uttered but fifteen words to me while he was alive. Not a social kind of person if you know what I mean. I will have to think how I can get my address to you. My daughter has a Facebook acct. I may be able to use hers. Her name is Gia rather unique so you will know it is us asking to friend you. This has been fabulous. Thank you for the history. You have an interesting family on both sides. I will tell you about the other side when we are on Facebook. Talk soon. Dolores

Dolores M - Hi Delores. I wonder if our families ever met when my family live in Pennsylvania? My father was a quiet man also and rarely talked. So, fortunately a lot of the family history I discovered through relatives. I'm a private person also, mostly due to work and traveling however. I have two emails you may write to me. I'll give you my Facebook email so that it will be easier for you and your daughter to contact me and keep the point of reference intak: coberry01@earthlink.net Would like to see if I may help you gather research in regards to your great-grandfather. Hope all is well take care.

In 1670 laid the foundations of Old Charleston. My mothers side of the family. One person this Middleton clip does not share, is the acknowledgement of Arthur Middleton's father. That was Henry Middleton, who served for a period of time as the president in The Second Continental Congress. It was the Second Continental Congress that ratified The Declaration of Independence which would be signed by our founding fathers. The members of that party were such individuals as: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson...the list goes on. However, H. Middleton would leave Philadelphia before the final draft of the D.I. in order to return to S.C. and hold public offices. Some historians write that in his heart, H. Middleton was a Loyalist. A fun fact to also know - the movie, "The Patriot" (A movie believe it or not, was historical accuracy at certain points.) starring Mel Gibson, shot a few scenes at Middleton Place. British General Cornwallis did take up residency at Middleton Place after General Lincoin surrendered Charleston to General Cornwallis. Cornwallis's party scene in the Patriot was filmed at the Butterfly Garden of Middleton Place, it is the well known aerial view of Middleton Place. I could keep writing about the Middleton history, but the only way one can appreciate Middleton Place, is to go there!
