I’m just an average guy doing average things and sharing them with you on TH-cam. I live in Nashville, TN and I split my time traveling the USA on a tour bus and doing projects around home or out chilling on our boat when I’m not on the bus.

What’s 40 miles up the Cumberland River in Nashville, TN
มุมมอง 3K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Here’s a short video of our boat ride 40 miles up the Cumberland River. We started at Old Hickory Lake and Drakes Creek. Clean water, fewer boats and lots of gorgeous coves and plenty of natural beauty.
What if your bulb is not upside down?
Unfortunately, I have no answer for that question. Sorry
You did not mention water pressure, trim or jack plate height
How many drain points got this engine
As far as I know, it’s just the one drain point. You can change it like most do with a suction pump through the fill tube also.
Can I hook this up to a used outboard and read the past hours on the motor? The boat doesn’t have an hour meter
You should be able to do that as long as the motor is smartcraft ready.
VesselView Mobile has been an excellent data source for the functioning of the Mercury outboard. Thank you for putting this video out there. There will be screen burn from having the app open all the time, so I have an old smartphone mounted on the dash that is used for this app, the Victron app for the shunt on the trolling motor battery, and downloaded music. However, I have a few frustrations: 1. It would be nice if there was a way of adding separate notes that didn't relate to their regular maintenance green/red circle replace/check options. For example, recording just an alternator change with the engine hours and date. I've sent a suggestion about this to Mercury, but crickets came back on that. 2. The price. This thing costs $320ish in Canada, and two have already failed - each just outside the warranty period. This has been one every boating season and so I've paid $1,000 for this functionality (the third has lasted a couple of seasons now). These engines are expensive, and I feel that being able to keep an eye on what's going on with it shouldn't be an extra profit feature for Mercury.
I agree, the information at hand is amazing. That’s a good idea on the other maintenance logging as well, it would be nice. Man, hate to hear you’ve had such bad luck with yours. Knock on wood, ours has been rock solid. Hope you can get it settled with them and keep one working long term. Thanks for watching
How about candelabra bulbs in a swinging chandelier?
I haven’t tried it for ours but my guess is that’s not gonna work. Not sure if there’s a device that will do them. Ours point straight up. Now you have me wondering about ours. Good luck. Thanks for watching
But what do you do when the base socket starts to turn while tightening the new bulb and the electricity disconnects?
Not sure what you’re asking. Are you saying the bulb spun in the base and broke off?
Hi is it possible to link by blue tooth my vessel view unit to an iPad and a phone simultaneously? Great video by the way
Hey there, thanks for watching. Not that I’ve ever been able to do. Not really sure if it’s a limitation of VV or the devices. That being said, I haven’t tried in quite a while so maybe there’s been a change and it will work… would be nice on occasion for sure. Curious, why do you want it on 2 devices at once?
@@adayinthislife4545 hi thanks for your reply, why two devices well when I am at the helm I tend to focus on navigating and avoiding crab pots so can’t get into the app very well, it’s only when second mate is at the helm do I get a chance to study what’s going on in VV on my phone but that means the helm station is missing the display for the other captain, in hope this makes sense 😂
@mikedaviescooke1683 ah, gotcha. Makes perfect sense.
Hahah yes to me that’s why I’m on TH-cam looking how to disassemble my roomba😅
Ugh.. well, welcome to the club nobody wants to voluntarily join lol. Hope the video helped. It’s actually pretty simple once you locate all the screws. Good luck. Thanks for watching
Hi how do you do twin engines ?
I don’t have twin engines but my understanding is they will need to be linked by a junction box, available through Mercruiser, and from there you’ll connect the dongle. Once it’s installed, it will read the info from both ECU’s. If you already have Mercruiser smart gauges, you should have a junction box already installed. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching
Your video saved my life! I have 6 recessed ceiling lights, all eent off, 18 feet high in living room. I was once wondering how much of hiring someone to use scaffolding to get up to change these crazy lights. Great thankful to your video!
Yeah I can appreciate your situation, ours are about the same height and I didn’t cherish the idea of trying to get a ladder to reach. Glad the video was helpful. Good luck and thanks for watching
Great info!
Thanks, glad you found it useful. Are you already using VesselView? Thanks for watching
Well well done, to-the-point. Thanks
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you found the video useful. Thanks for watching
Where can you get list of fault codes?
Here’s a link to download them Hope this helps. Thanks for watching www.scribd.com/document/489441734/merccodeshsortlist
Bless you for this! I was ready to cry. 😭 ❤
It’s definitely an emotionally evoking discovery for sure. Glad it helped. Hope all works out for you. Thanks for watching
But how do you access the same inaccessible ceiling location for LED downlighter bulb replacement? My downlighters all have a spring clip holding the bulb in place.
That is an interesting question, I don’t have any lights like that in my house so unfortunately, I have no idea. Sorry I wasn’t helpful. Thanks for watching
Thank you so much! Just got one and changed my light bulb in the kitchen at 10 ‘ high without a ladder🥰
Awesome. I love that it makes changing bulbs so much easier. Glad you enjoyed the video. Please feel free to share. Thanks for watching
I’ll be doing this later today
Ugh, never fun. Good luck
Thank you so much for this video! What a mess… my Black lab was sick over night and I won’t say the rest. Now to clean it. Hopefully I won’t have to buy a new roomba.
Well, unfortunately welcome to the club nobody ever wants to join 😉. Always fun when this happens. We were lucky and with a whole lot of cleaning it went back together completely void of any evidence of the catastrophe. Glad you found the video and it’ll be useful. Good luck and thanks for watching
FYI, I ended up using a version of your idea for my raised garden bed cover. I mention your video here: th-cam.com/video/yfJnLL1LmY0/w-d-xo.html and here: th-cam.com/video/yfJnLL1LmY0/w-d-xo.html Thanks for the idea! I doubt you had raised garden bed covers in mind when you made it, but a good idea is a good idea. Thanks again!
Hey, that’s awesome. Glad it inspired someone. I did not have a raised garden in mind, but I’m glad it transfers to other uses. I was sitting on the boat, irritated at that hatch always falling down and it hit me, the idea not the hatch lid LOL, I had the stuff onboard to make a snap strap and a video idea was inspired. Awesome, thanks for the props. Thanks for watching
My ceiling light fixture have a globe over the bulbs therefore I have to remove the globe first what can I do about that
Hmm, that’s a good question. We have a ceiling fan with a clone on it but I’m guessing when those lights go, I’ll have to resort to a ladder. Unfortunately, like most all things, they have limitations and this seems to have found one of them for the light changer. Sorry I wasn’t helpful, I just haven’t encountered a situation like this, yet, at my house. 98% of our overhead lights are recessed can lights and the bulb changer does it perfectly. Good luck. Thanks for watching
Question. That connector on my engine is plugged into a cable that runs to the smart craft gauge in my dash. Can I plug in the vessel view into that cable and then the cable from the vessel view into my smart craft gauge?
Honestly I don’t know if they’ll work but if you get a hub from Mercruiser, you’ll plug the cable into it then you will plug the smartcraft gauge and VV into the hub and both will work. If you call Mercruiser they’ll get you set right up. Thanks for watching
Doesnt work, tried this but the bulb is not budging
Wow, it’s in there tight. I’ve hand a couple that took a little work but eventually they came out. Hopefully you’ll have the same luck. Thanks for watching
Great tutorial! Thanks for taking time to share knowledge. Concise video with logical flow. Excellent graphics. Masterful phraseology. Expert editing.
Glad you found the video and it was useful. I very much appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching
Awesome video thanks for that. I am been frustrated with the analog gauges for so long and now some of them are failing. This is the way forward, replace all the gauges with a brand new iPad PRO.
Thanks, so glad you found it and it was helpful. Don’t already have the VV Dongle? It’s a great feeling knowing I don’t have to guess if my gauges are reading accurately. I LOVE my VV mobile. Thanks for watching. Let me know how it good and if you love it too
Thanks! Just installed on my new boat so I can brake it in correctly.
Awesome. Congrats on your new toy. I hope you love it as much as I do, it’s the best money I’ve spent on my boat besides gas money lol. Enjoy and thanks for watching
Nice and simple solution! I'm looking for something similar for a raised garden bed cover I'm building to keep the cover's hatch doors open. This gives me some ideas. Thanks!
Thanks. Glad you found it helpful. I’m so surprised how few views this video gets because to me, it was such a simple thing and easy to do, lol. Thanks for watching
@adayinthislife4545 Yep. I have a few that got very few but think they deserve more and a couple that got a lot, though I wouldn't think they should. You never know what the algorithm suggests to who and what people want to watch. Good video though!
@DadWhoKnowsThings yeah for sure. I always amazed at what trends and what doesn’t. My biggest issue is, I’m not consistent in putting videos out.
Thank you!!! I installed Vessel View 3 years ago. It came with decent instructions on how to install it but nothing on how to use it. I have looked on Mercury's website & I have emailed them but still nothing. No response. So as a poster below noted, I wondered why I had bought it because it did nothing for me. But your video is awesome. You should sell your video to Mercury!
Can the vessel view be set to metric?
Yes it can. When in the app, go to top left 3 bars and click on it. Scroll to bottom and select settings. From there you can select unit of measurement or change the individual options independently. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching
@@adayinthislife4545 Thanks :)
@@adayinthislife4545 Cheers Mate
Thanks for the video! Can you switch everything to metric in the app (km/h, litres, etc.) as well as temperature unit to celcius?
You’re welcome, glad you found it and it was helpful. You can I believe. It’s on the general settings. Go to top left corner of the app, hit the 3 bars and scroll to settings. You can change units of measure there. Thanks for watching. Do you have VV and dongle already?
@@adayinthislife4545 Thanks! Not yet. Picking up my boat soon and am considering buying one of these units.
Definitely recommend if the boat is smartcraft capable. Super easy to install and setup. No more wondering if the gauges are reading accurately. Here’s a link for ya if you don’t mind supporting our channel with the affiliate link amzn.to/4cjLpJg Don’t forget the termination plug amzn.to/3Rv9aEj In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the installation video th-cam.com/video/UBQKfn0jnzQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5TAogkE_QT7zcS3P Thanks again for watching
How do you keep the upper part of the pole from twisting loose? I tried to use mine and this keeps happening
Are you saying the suction cup is coming loose or the lock on your extension of the pole? If it’s the bulb changer, there should be a wing nut to secure it. If it’s the pole, I’m not sure, I haven’t had that issue. Can you tape the collar where the two sections meet and you “lock” it in place? Hope that helps. Thanks for watching
Great info, thanks for making the app understandable. I have a 2020 502 Mag. It took me a while to find the plugin on the engine. Look under the air intake filter. Pop the cover off and fish around under the filter you will find the yellow cap there. Thanks again for taking the time to show how the app works
You’re very welcome. Glad you found the video and it was helpful. I appreciate the kind words. Hope you enjoy VV as much as I do. Thanks for watching
This is an excellent video on Vessel View! Until now I wondered why I even bought it. There was nothing out there to explain how to set it up and use. Not even the Mercury reps at the boat show could. I have this saved and will refer to it many times Im sure. Thank You and I have subscribed... Dave R
Hi Dave, I completely understand what you’re saying, I felt the same when I bought mine. Glad you found this video and it was helpful. Thanks also for subscribing, I very much appreciate it. Any other boating topics you’d like to see covered? Anything more with VV mobile? Thanks for watching and subscribing.
Is it possible to connect 2 or 3 android devices to one single outboard with vessel view?
I wish I had an answer but I don’t, sorry. I believe I tried connecting 2 Apple devices at the same time and it wouldn’t do it. Best bet is call Mercury Marine, they should be able to answer that question. Sorry I wasn’t much help. Thanks for watching
Thank you so much for this!💜
You’re welcome. Glad you found it helpful and liked it. Thanks for watching
THANK YOU for posting this! I got this for my dad as a Christmas present. 👍
You’re welcome. Glad you found it useful. We love our heater and it’s done well for us. Hope your dad loves it too. Thanks for watching
Thank you for this video, it came just in time. I noticed that you posted 4 yrs ago. Are the LED bulbs still working? I just purchased bulbs that claim 15,000 hours/13 yrs. If yours haven't needed replacement by now, the advertising MAY be true.
Hey there, thanks for watching, glad you found it. With the exception of one bulb, all the LED’s are still working just like day 1. Hope you have good luck with them.
Very helpful, thanks for the thorough video.
Awesome. Glad you found it useful. Do you have VesselView ? Thanks for watching
If you haven’t installed it yet, don’t forget to take a look at the installation video. Here’s the link Installing VesselView mobile dongle(by Mercruiser). th-cam.com/video/UBQKfn0jnzQ/w-d-xo.html
@@adayinthislife4545 I installed it the other day. The directions for that were pretty clear from the package. How to get to all the details in the App not so much.
Thanks for the video! It really helped after the dog poo incident. One question, did you have to clean the area under the brushes and what did you use to clean that area?
Well, welcome to the group you’ve never wanted to be a part of lol. Glad the video helped. I did clean it and just used some cleaner and paper towels. I cleaned every area and part I could reach. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
@@adayinthislife4545 Thanks for the club welcome, I think . .lol. Since that area was the cleaning module, I was not sure it could be wet. It does help a lot! Thanks loads (pun intended)!
@bernigreene5936 yeah it’s a sincere welcome to an unwanted fraternity lol. If memory serves, correct, I shouldn’t get too wet but I sprayed the paper towel with cleaner and thoroughly wiped it down taking care to not get things too wet. Glad it helped.
Will black flexseal over time end up staining the floor?
Hey Rick, thanks for watching. To be honest that was our concern and why we chose to use the white. The black backing from the factory was problematic enough, didn’t want to chance it so we chose white. So far, it’s held up and hasn’t left any marks or residue. Hope that helps. Thanks again for watching. Please feel free to like and share the video if you found it helpful.
I have a fluorescent lightbulb tube that needs replaced though 😭
Well, that certainly poses a problem. I’ve never looked, wonder if there is a tool for that. Sorry I couldn’t help. That is for watching though.
Oops, typo, thanks for watching
So which parts can you get wet, soak, whatever and which do you have to be more careful with? Assembly video is helpful, sure, but completely skips over anything to do with actually cleaning the unit.
I used a dry brush to clean the wheel assemblies but washed the beater bars and such. If it had any electrical component it it I didn’t get water anywhere near it. Thanks for watching
Never cleaned the wheel , hair and dirt get in there and if not cleaned the wheel will not turn and May scratch the floor. It’s the little 360 spinner wheel.
Great info! Just bought one
Congrats on your new purchase. Glad you liked the video. Be sure to post back and share your thoughts on VV. Thanks for watching
They don’t have one with full diagnostics ?
If you have vessel view monitors or converts the system to NMEA2000 onto a compatible screen/GPS you will get more info, if you have the sensors, suck as steering position, trim tabs, trim position, fuel gauge etc… again, from my understanding this is all dependent on the sensors your boat has. Thanks for watching.
I don’t know the depth unto which they will read diagnostics such as as code readers read. That is definitely a question for Mercruiser.
So far the only thing I see that my smart gauge doesn’t have is the oil temp
So it’s no more than the smart gauge
As far as I know the smart gauge and VV Mobile are very similar in their capabilities. Full blown vessel view via smartcraft screens has more info but it appears that the VV mobile was a simple way to add the smartcraft info without replacing gauges and for less $$.
can this tells me whats problem my boat has ?
Thanks for watching. It will display code and faults. It won’t tell you if a plug has fouled out or something such as that. 2 years ago we had an IAC valve go bad. It did show that fault and helped me track it down easily. Hope that helps

Mine disconects every 30 seconds any advice?
Wow, bet that’s frustrating. Is it mounted where it can get lots of electrical interference? How far away is it from your phone/tablet? I’m guessing it’s getting interference. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching
How do you remove the backing stuck to the gelcoat under the carpet? Mine is the non-slip gelcoat.
Wow that’s a good question. Ours washed off with a nice bristle brush and Dawn.
