    I have no idea how they are in such rough conditions and don't instantly flip the boat. I tried one with my wife on a flat lake and had to limp back to shore with the paddle on the bottom to prevent it from turning over. Honestly I miss the Waterman IMHO a far better interpretation from Nelo, maybe any kayak company of what a double should be. All the speed, same width but lower center of gravity and not a log shaped hull so it doesn't constantly want to flip over on you. I am very glad I got my hands on one and sad to see they don't import them anymore.

      Hi Mike. We still import the Waterman, it would be a pre-order as we don't hold stock of that model. The Nelo 600 is a double surfski, not a kayak, so that would be like comparing a road bike to a mountain bike. Surfskis are inherently unstable, and although this 600 is an exceptionally stable surfski, it is still going to be, by design and purpose, a lot more unstable than a sea kayak. Its a different class of boat. Reach out to us via our website if you'd like to get yourself a Waterman. www. NeloUS.com

      @@nelousa120 I appreciate the input and had contacted Nelo a couple years ago and was told they would no longer be importing Watermans and turning exclusively to skis but was lucky to find one on Ebay just before the pandemic hit. What a buy! Not exactly the most stable kayak but for the performance it's not that difficult to keep upright. The skis can go really fast but that's the only thing it does well and at *all* costs. You have to be singularly focused on having the fastest boat possible irrespective of the huge effort it takes to keep one upright and in control. I also cycle, own both an MTB as well as a road bike and the analogy just doesn't work. Yes the more technical descents in mountain biking have a steeper learning curve but if you keep your trails safe and sane, know when to dismount and walk the bike you can ride a road or MTB back to back without much of a difference. In other word if you can stay upright on one you can ride the other back to back and still be just as upright, not falling no problem. This is not the case kayak vs ski at all! Glad to hear you're importing the Watermans again. Simply amazing boat, maybe the best double kayak ever designed!

    Could a K1 be used as a surf ski?

    • @nelousa120
      @nelousa120 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Daniel - surfskis are designed for open ocean paddling, in any types of conditions - from flat water to wild seas! K1's are designed for flatwater, and not the ocean.

      A few years ago a friend of mine paddled an Olympic K1 in the Blackburn Challenge - an offshore race around Cape Ann, in Massachusetts. He said it was like a submarine in even small ocean waves - not enough flotation due to low volume. Also, not really safe without bulkheads to restrict the amount of water that enters the boat during an out-of-boat capsize, so the whole boat fills up.

      @@davidGrainger Depends on the K1 - we race "normal" K1's down rivers in South Africa. They handle fine :) This Vipe 46 surfski is more of a surfski than a K, and handles surf up to around 4ft.
