Eddie Shore Springfield Massachusetts, LEGEND!!

I spent many a Sunday afternoon in the late 40's and week-end nights in the late 40's and early 50's watching stock cars and an occasional "Big Car", (predecessor of the open wheel sprint cars) and some midget race cars at Dover. The turns were actually fairly steeply banked. My dad took me to my first stock car race in Dover for my 11th birthday in 1947. The winner was Tommy Coates closely followed by Wally Campbell. In 1948 one of the first NASCAR modified stock car races was held at Dover. The last race I saw there was in 1954. Some of the other stock car drivers in the late 40's and early 50's at Dover, were Frankie Schneider, Rocky and Chic DiNatale, Pep Sparone. I never recall a boring race at Dover. Also saw Ted Horn win in a big car race at Dover. It had to be the summer of 1948, because Ted lost his life at DuQuoin,Il. in October 1948. Probably one of the most exciting auto racing I saw in those years.

So Stephen McHattie played Eddie Shore in this and also played Dick Irvin in 2005s “The Rocket”. He plays a great coach

Thanks for posting! I live about 10 miles from the old Dover Speedway site and have visited the ShopRite there a few times (most notably on a late-night run to buy ice cream with my friends Sam and Eileen back in September 2019). Here's an interesting fact: Dover Speedway hosted one NASCAR Modified race in 1948, with Johnny Rogers taking the victory.
